7 A Warm Welcome Established in 2003, London School of Science & Technology (LSST) has grown to become one of London s leading independent, private higher education institutions, which with 1600 students, makes LSST an exciting, diverse and a multi-cultural place to learn. As a result, we are able to offer students the opportunity to study higher education qualifications which contain carefully structured teaching methods tailored to progress onto higher level university programmes. 13 Specialised LSST offers a much higher staff to student ratio compared to universities. Our teaching model is classroom based with small groups ensuring each student receives the appropriate attention. If that is not enough, our lecturers are available outside the classroom hours for additional support and one to one sessions. Academic Support We provide initial and ongoing academic and non-academic support, we understand that higher education can be overwhelming, whether your are already confident as learner, or returning to education after many years, or feel nervous about joining an intensive full time course. At LSST the course is designed with mature adult learners in mind. Highly developed Facilities LSST offers state of the art facilities, large computer labs with high end software, a library with learning resource centre, canteen, common room and parking is also available on site a small cost. The college is based in West London, Luton and Birmingham, not far from respective city centres. Students can access any campus of LSST and use its facilities. Practical and vocational approach to learning LSST offers a practical and vocational approach to learning Business and Computing. Most of course assessments are based on assignments, allowing students to study their own business ideas or carry out independent research on individual areas of interest. 19 Birmingham Study Centre (BSC) The BSC is located in Digbeth, which is one of the most distinctive parts of the city and is less than ten minutes walk from the Bull Ring and Birmingham train station and 5 minutes walk from the Birmingham coach station. Public Car Parking There is a public car park available right in front of the college 2.20 for all day or 0.75 for an hour. It is only 10 minutes walk from the City of Birmingham University. Our academic staff combines sound business experience, academic theory and real-world practicalities. 21 Academic Support Centre (ASC) LSST s Academic Support Centre (ASC) primarily focuses upon enhancing teaching practices and the quality of the student learning experience through strong co-ordination processes assuring the quality of educational provision for supporting activities. The centre adopts both personal and practical approach to academic study and opportunities for students to develop their learning strategies. The ASC will be engaged with additional and complementary delivery of diverse study skills and specific one-to-one support services all in sync with the requirements of the wider faculty and college. Nature of Academic Support Centre s operation: Academic Support Workshops & Seminars Group workshops are held throughout the year covering wide range of topics. These sessions are open to all learners i.e. walk-in basis. The sessions will be the delivery of the mini-series of seminars such as: Study Skills, Communication Skills, Computer Skills, Harvard Referencing, Research Skills, and Problem-solving skills. WHY CHOSE TO STUDY WITH US? 21 No booking for such session is required (however, because the capacity of classes is limited, book well in advance to avoid disappointment). One to one Session (via Referral system) LSST offers specialist one-to-one session(s) for those learners who have formal referral from member of staff to address their specific needs. Oneto-one support sessions are tailored to meet learners needs and can include support in relevant/specific subject area. Academic Support Staff extends helps on time-slot basis and attendance is mandatory. Such prescription and compulsory attendance may also include some of the seminars, depending upon the needs of the student, as identified by the personal tutor (0) info@lsst.ac

22 22 Personal Tutors They will be responsible for tracking the student attendance and achievement. Each one personal tutor will have specific students to look after similar to the role of a key account manager. In their role, personal tutors will be dealing with their allocated students and ensure that they attend, participate, submit and pass the assignments. If personal tutor will not be satisfied by student attendance or achievement s/he will refer the student to the ASC (Academic Support Centre) for prescribed services and student attendance will be compulsory. Student Services Student Services are here to provide you with a range of support, information and specialist services to enhance your study experience. Our professional welfare officers will provide pastoral support; finance officer who will provide support related to financial matters including student loans; there will be a space for student union coordinator who will be assisting the students with general issues; academic support coordinator will be helping the students in academic related matters e.g. results or feedback or referring to tutors; careers service officer who will be responsible for providing advice on careers and future progression and faculty staff members (the Module leaders) will run office hours i.e. one hour twice a week to resolve student queries related to lectures or assignments. info@lsst.ac +44 (0)

23 The Library and Learning Resource Centre As a student at LSST, you will be able to take full advantage of the Library and Learning Resource Centre. There is a wide range of facilities available to students in each campus for both: business and computing areas of interest, including more than 3000 books, the latest publications of newspapers and magazines. In addition, students are also able to gain access to some of the latest electronic journals through Emerald. The library staffs also offer one-to-one tutorials on request, and drop in sessions are available for workshops in the learning centre: Support sessions are available with Word, PowerPoint and Excel. 24 LSST Infrastructure Each campus provides variety of opportunities to get to know how to use the latest technology. As a student of LSST you will have access to computer labs with all relevant and latest computer technology and Software Packeges. Dedicated IT support staff and lecturers are available for frequent computing workshops where you can gain an in-depth knowledge of standard software applications. LSST offers fast online access to make sending s, logging in to the LSST Connect and submitting coursework online more beneficial to students. For extra help there are also our drop-in computing facility and IT Support Centre. 25 Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) VLE enables staff and students unlimited 24/7 access to course materials, assignments and other resources. VLE can be accessed from any computer or device with an internet connection and is therefore an invaluable resource. LSST Connect Enables tutors to communicate with students via multiple methods, including the discussion board, real-time chat and functions. Tutors can also upload teaching and learning materials, interactive tests, audio and video content. Each course has its own space with access restricted to enrolled students. 27 Student Union The aim of the Student union is to work entirely for the benefit of students. The Union is managed by Student Reps who will be elected each year by the whole student population, who work and volunteer for the Union for a year. The Union will represent student views, concerns and will ensure that students have access to quality services. It will listen to the students for bringing in positive change and will work with relevant staff members to make it happen. There will be an appointed student union coordinator who will be working closely with student Reps, faculty and other departments of the School to set the direction of the Union and its activities. This will involve organising student elections, deploying student surveys and taking deliberate steps to hear student voice at strategic and operational level. Promoting Entrepreneurship Spirit In recent years, LSST has seen rapidly growing interest in entrepreneurship among our students. Every year, enthusiastic, innovative and successful students are invited to participate in LSST Dragon s Den competition where everyone had chance to pitch their business idea and win financial support to put towards the development of their business. Moreover, Dragons Den provides students with valuable feedback from business professionals on the viability of their business proposals. Participants are given tips on how to progress with their proposal as well as sources of information and funding. 34 Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Business Course overview BTEC Nationals are highly regarded by universities, further education colleges and employers. Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Business course is designed to provide highly specialist, work-related qualification in business sectors. This course gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment. The BTEC Level 3 Certificate is broadly equivalent to one GCE AS Level. Modules studied The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate is a 30-credit and 180-guided-learninghour (GLH) qualification that consists of two mandatory modules plus an optional module that provide for a combined total of 30 credits. 35 Entry requirements Age: 19+ Each applicant s potential will be considered on individual bases in order to make a professional judgement about their ability to successfully complete the programme of study and achieve the qualification. For learners who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following: A BTEC or related qualification at Level 2 Relevant work experience A general level of education equivalent to at least four A+- to C-grade GCSEs. In addition, students will be required to attend an interview. Students who do not have formal level 2 qualification or more mature learners may have a more varied learning profile, which is likely to include either paid or unpaid employment. 36 Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Business (QCF) Course overview The success of all businesses depends on having people who are well qualified and experienced. This course combines practical and academic teaching methods to produce an understanding of different business concepts. Modules Studied Learners must achieve a minimum of 120 credits (of which at least 65 must be at level 4) on their programme of learning to be awarded a BTEC Level 4 HNC. 80 Available Financial Support Support from the Government: Student Finance England If you decide to apply for BTEC Higher National Qualifications and University of West London (Top-up) courses you can get student finance to help pay for your costs while studying.
