1 Math 0312 Fall 2013 Course Document Course Title: Instructor: Intermediate Algebra Sukhlal Ramharack Prerequisite: ASSET: Elementary Algebra Raw Score: Scaled Score: ASSET: Intermediate Algebra Raw Score: 0-15, Scaled Score: Math 0308: Pass with C or better. Credit: Three (3) hours credit (3 Lecture), and 1 hr Lab. Course Contact Hours: 64 hrs Materials Needed: Textbook: Intermediate Algebra, 11 th ed. Addison Wesley: Boston,2008,by Margaret Lial, John Hornsby, & Terry McGinnis. Audience: This course is for students who require state mandated remediation. Purpose: Intermediate Algebra is designed to provide the student with background in fundamental algebra and skill in mathematical manipulation needed for a further study of mathematics. Course Description: HCC Catalog Description: Topics include factoring techniques, radicals, algebraic fractions, complex numbers, Graphing linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, system of equations, Graphing quadratic equations and an introduction to functions. Emphasis is placed on algebraic techniques, in order to successfully complete Math A departmental final examination must be passed with a score of 60% or more in order to pass this course. Course Goal: This is the final course in the developmental mathematics sequence and its purpose is to prepare students for College Algebra. Cousrse Student Learning Outcomes (SLO): 1. Solve algebraic equations and inequalities involving rational expressions, radicals, quadratics, or linear expressions. 2. Examine and interpret the linear and quadratic graphs of equations and inequalities. 3. Solve application problems. 4. Use and interpret function notation in both algebraic and graphical contexts. 2 1.7 add, subtract, multiply, divide expressions involving radicals and solve radical equations 1.8 add, subtract, multiply and divide complex numbers 1.9 solve quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, use of the quadratic formula and the square root property solve systems of linear equations in two variables 2.1 graph linear equations & linear inequalities in two variables 2.2 find the slope of a line & write its equation 2.3 graph quadratic functions and inequalities 3.1 solve word problems 4.1 recognize functional notation & evaluate functions General Course Outline: Chapters: Sections: , 2.5, 2.7; ; 4.1; 5.1, ; ; ; ; 9.1, 9.2, 9.6, 9.7; and Evaluation: A student who has a final course average of 70% or better will receive based on that average, an A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69) or F Below 60. Students who score less than 50% on the Final Examination will be awarded a course grade of F. Students who score greater than or equal to 50% and less than 60% will be awarded a grade of D (60-69) or F (0-59). The D grade will be awarded to those whose overall average are greater than or equal to 60%. The F grade will be awarded to those whose overall average is less than 60%. Attendance: Attendance is key for your success. After 12.5% absences (3) the instructor can withdraw the student unless notified that there are extenuating circumstances. Final day for students withdrawing is November 1 st, Grading: Four Exam (15% each) 60% Final Exam 25% Quiz 5% Labs 10% Total 100% The exams are closed-notes, closed-book non-collaborative exams. The exams will definitely take place at the dates prescribed in the included class schedule at the scheduled exam times (barring an event that closes the college), so please plan your schedule accordingly. 3 Departmental Finals: In order to be assigned a grade in Math 0312, the student must pass the department final examination. For complete information regarding Houston Community College s policies on attendance, please refer to the Student Handbook. 3-peaters: Effective Fall 2006, HCC charges a higher tuition rate to students registering for the third or subsequent time for certain courses. Students who enroll for most credit and CEU classes for a third or more time will be charged an additional $50 per semester credit hour and $3.00 per contact hour, except for courses exempted by The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Withdrawals: It is the responsibility of the student to officially drop or withdraw from a course. Failure to officially withdraw may result in the student receiving an F in the course. A student who officially withdraws from a course before the Official Date of Record will not receive a grade and the course will not appear on the student's permanent record. A student withdrawing from a course after this period and prior to the deadline designated in the HCC calendar will receive a grade of W. Students should take care in dropping a course, since the third or future attempt to retake a course will result in a higher rate of tuition.students may only drop online during the drop/add period listed in the registration calendar. After the first week of class in a regular term, students must complete a withdrawal form and meet with a counselor to complete the withdrawal process. Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling course requirements. Penalties and/or disciplinary proceedings may be initiated against any student accused of scholastic dishonesty. Cheating will earn a zero on the exam. Final grade disputes should follow the guidelines in the student handbook.

4 Students Conduct: No student may disrupt or otherwise interfere with any educational activity being performed by a member of the College System. Any student failing to abide by appropriate standards of conduct during scheduled college activities may be asked to leave that day s class or activity by the instructor or another college official. It is the responsibility of the student to drop a class by W day if he/she desires. The use of cell phones in class is strictly prohibited. In addition, cell phones will not be allowed to be used as substitute for calculators; anyone found using a cell phone during an exam will receive an automatic zero. In the event of emergency or exceptional cases please discuss with the professor. HCCS provides accommodations for students with disabilities.
