4 Introduction Kenya Water Institute (KEWI) is a public institution established by the Kenya Water Institute Act, 2001 with the mandate to provide directly or in collaboration with other institutions of higher learning services in human resource development, consultancy, research and development, training programmes, seminars and workshops in the water sector and to conduct examinations and award Diplomas, Certificates and other awards. KEWI has four campuses, namely: 1. Nairobi Main Campus, in Nairobi South C 2. Chiakariga Campus, in Tharaka Nithi County 3. Kitui Campus in Kitui County 4. Kisumu Campus, in Kisumu County Vision: A World Class Centre of Excellence in Training, Research and Consultancy in the Water Sector Mission: To offer Competency-Based Training, Research, Consultancy and Outreach Services in the Water Sector for sustainable development Motto: Fountain of Water Knowledge

7 Message from the Chair of the Governing Council I take this opportunity on behalf of the Governing Council Kenya Water Institute to congratulate the graduands on the occasion of the 29 th Graduation Ceremony. As you graduate today, take this as a foundation for greater conquest that awaits you in pursuit of more knowledge in the field of water studies and research. I challenge you to keep your eyes open and ears set so as to embrace every opportunity that will come your way. Let me take this moment to register the Governing Council s gratitude to all the stakeholders in the water sector who have in one way or the other made a significant contribution to operations of the institute. Your continued support is what has enabled the graduands come this far.

I am very confident that you are ready to tackle the challenges of the rapidly growing water industry because you have been equipped with the requisite skills and knowledge. I would like to thank parents, guardians, staff and all those who contributed to the successful completion of your studies and made it possible for all us to witness this graduation ceremony. All these could not have been possible without the unrelenting support of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the Governing Council and staff of which I am deeply indebted. I thank the members of staff for giving their best to ensure that we deliver highly trained graduates to the job market. Finally, I wish the graduands success in all their future endeavors, may you live to the values of this great institution as you put to use what you acquired at KEWI towards improving the water sector.

This is in line with the National goals of TVET and Vision 2030 where it is anticipated that human resource capacity at the technical level will drive industrial development agenda. 13 REGULAR TRAINING PROGRAMMES The Institute offers Higher Diploma, Diploma, Certificate and Operators Courses as follows: 1. Higher Diploma in Water Engineering 2 yrs The minimum entry requirement is an Ordinary Diploma in a relevant course 2. Diploma in Water Engineering (Modular) 3 yrs 3. Diploma in Water Resources Management 3 yrs 4. Diploma in Water & Wastewater Laboratory Technology 3 yrs 5. Diploma in Irrigation & Drainage Engineering (Modular) 3 yrs The minimum entry requirements for the Diploma courses are: An average C- in KCSE with C- in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Physical Science, or A division II in KCE with Credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Physical Science. 6. Diploma in Information Technology 2 years The minimum entry requirements are: An average C- in KCSE with C- in English and Mathematics, or A division II in KCE with Credits in English and Mathematics 7. Certificate in Water Engineering (Modular) 2 yrs 8. Certificate in Irrigation & Drainage Engineering (Modular) 2 years The minimum entry requirements for the certificate courses are: An average D in KCSE with D in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Physical Science, or A division III in KCE with Passes in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Physical Science 9. Certificate in Water Resources Management 2 yrs 10. Certificate in Water & Wastewater Laboratory Technology 2 yrs The minimum entry requirements for the certificate courses are: An average D in KCSE with D in English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Physical Science, or A division III in KCE with Passes in English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Physical Science.

14 Bridging Course: The course is designed for students that do not meet the minimum subject requirements in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Bridging to Diploma Courses 3 months The minimum entry requirements are: An average C- in KCSE or A division II in KCE 11. Bridging to Certificate Courses 3 months The minimum entry requirements are: An average D in KCSE or A division III in KCE 12. Water Operators Course This course is offered in the following options: 1. Water Supply 2. Meter Reading 3. Sewerage The minimum entry requirements are: An average D- in KCSE, or A division IV in KCE This Course is offered in three levels; Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Level, each level taking three months. Short Courses KEWI conducts tailor made short term training courses, seminars and workshops relevant to the water sector. Some of the short-term courses offered include: 1. Non- Revenue Water management. 2. Metering and installation of water supply networks. 3. Leaks detection and repair techniques. 4. Operation and maintenance of water supply networks. 5. Operation and maintenance of pumping stations. 6. Pump selection, installation and maintenance. 7. Plumbing, pipefitting and solar water heating.

15 8. Instrumentation for water and wastewater systems. 9. Use of Earth Observation Tools and GIS for water resources management. 10. Water Governance, management and Technology. 11. Drilling courses. 12. Water quality sampling and testing. 13. Microbiological water quality assessment. 14. Integrated water resources management. 15. Customer care. 16. Entrepreneurship. 17. Financial management for water managers Consultancy and Extension Services KEWI offers a wide range of consultancy services including, borehole drilling, test pumping, hydrogeological surveys, leak detection, water loss reduction, water supply and wastewater systems, repairs and fabrication of water related plants and equipment and water quality analysis.

The department employs competency-based approach in delivering its programmes. 52 DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES & ENVIRON- MENTAL MANAGEMENT The Department consists of four sections: Water Quality, Ground Water, Surface Water and Environment. The department offers Diploma and Certificate programmes in Water Resources Technology and Management as well as Water and Wastewater Laboratory Technology. In addition WREM services various courses for other KEWI training programmes and short courses. The Department in conjunction with Living Water Africa Region (LWAR) has developed a syllabus for professional Drilling to address the growing demand for technical personnel in ground water exploration and exploitation. The acquisition of a rotary drilling rig early this year will enhance training and consultancy services in drilling technology. The Water Quality section hosts fairly equipped chemical and biological laboratories which provide hands-on training for KEWI students. Additionally, the laboratories provide water quality practical training and testing services to the public at a reasonable fee. The Institute has initiated the process of ISO/IEC 17025:2005 water quality testing laboratory accreditation. This is aimed at enhancing the quality management system and laboratory controls in order to provide international recognition of our water quality testing laboratories
