Driffield School & Sixth Form 2017 RESULTS NEWS 1
Welcome To the first edition of the results news brochure, as we celebrate our students recording-breaking GCSE and A-Level results and achievements from summer DRIFFIELD SCHOOL SIXTH FORMERS ACHIEVE TOP GRADES EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE FROM YEAR 13 STUDENTS A Level results day saw smiling faces all round as students came to collect their outstanding results. Over 100 students sat exams with us this summer for both A Level and applied academic courses. There have been some exceptional individual achievements with a number of students being awarded A* and A grades and 62% of students achieving at least one A*-B grade. Our applied academic courses also achieved large numbers of Distinction and Merit grades. Driffield Sixth Form has gained a higher progress score compared to the previous year as the Sixth Form s development continues. On average, students studying at Driffield Sixth Form are progressing on from their GCSE starting points with many students achieving beyond their target grades. Contents 2 Students had aspirations to study at some of the most competitive and sought after universities in the country, many striving to secure places at Russell Group universities. Over 86% of students were accepted at their first choice university, which is fantastic to see. Charis Palmer-Howe secured A*AA across mathematics, chemistry and physics, highlighting the strength of the sciences at Driffield and Isabel Beesley secured A* A* in maths and further maths and will study mathematics and economics at Bristol University. Callum Parkinson and Katie Pollard are amongst those who have successfully accessed their dream course at a top Russell Group University and both will be studying at Durham University next year. We are proud that the number of Driffield students progressing onto Russell Group Universities continues to exceed the national average. Both Alistair Jacques and Adam Storey gained their exciting places on the Rolls Royce Apprenticeships schemes and Will Hammond will study Music Performance at the prestigious Birmingham Conservatoire. This is testament to their continuous hard work and dedication. This year s Year 13 have been an exceptional year group and they have been focused on excellence. This desire to progress has seen them work exceptionally hard and they deserve all of the success they have gained this summer. They have created a wonderful Sixth Form community and this sense of collective responsibility and care is foundational to their success. - Darren Andrews, Assistant Headteacher and Head of Sixth Form Excellent Results Subjects deliver top end Performance Apprenticeships & maths records Strong results for year 11 Apprenticeships & maths records Best GCSE results in 5 years

Subjects deliver top end Performance Fantastic results achieved across the sixth form Subjects across our sixth form have delivered the goods with their top end results making a huge contribution to our sixth formers future success. Unfortunately, we don t have enough space in our newsletter to mention all the achievements so we have selected a few examples to give you a sense of the efforts made by students in specific subject areas. Maths saw a great set of results; with 6 students receiving an A* grade, with a tremendous 42% of students gaining and A*-A grade and 67% of students receiving A*-B grades. Across the sciences there were also large numbers of A*-B grades with chemistry making significant progress with 88% of students gaining A*-C grades. Our talented artistic students who took our creative subject courses received high grades with 100% achieving A*-B grades in fine art and textiles, with the fine art results placing that department in the top 15% nationally. In drama, 61 % of students received A*-B grades. Both film studies and food technology saw 100% of students achieve a grade C or above. Congratulations to all our departments on their excellent achievements. Continued success in applied academic subjects Katie Pollard A*AB Environmental Geography, Durham University I m still a bit shaky! I ve been crying, but I m so happy. I ve achieved so much better than I had hoped for I just can t believe it! Travel and tourism and health and social care secured results that see them in the top 20% nationally and our first set of students completing the demanding OCR Cambridge Technical qualification in media gained a 100% pass rate with students gaining the Distinction and Distinction*. Tom Burton BBB Mechanical Engineering, Lincoln University I achieved what I hoped for, so I m feeling great! 6
Double Rolls Royce Apprenticeships This year has seen a number of students opt for an apprenticeship after they have completed their A Levels. Driffield School & Sixth Form s links with local and national business, particularly as our Industry Mentoring grows, have allowed students to gain valuable skills and knowledge that are hugely beneficial for securing sought after apprenticeship positions. Both Alistair Jacques (Finance) and Adam Storey (Engineering) will take up prestigious apprenticeship opportunities at Rolls Royce in Derby after gaining superb A Level results. Jack Martindale has also secured a competitive apprenticeship place in engineering and Adam Sanders has been successful in gaining a local apprenticeship opportunity locally at Bradbury & Co accountants. We have expanded our apprenticeship links for next year, including major local employers such as Aunt Bessies and BAE Systems and expect to see further growth in students gaining apprenticeship opportunities. Adam Storey BBB, Rolls Royce apprenticeship For the past two years I ve been working towards a place on the Rolls Royce apprenticeship scheme to study aerospace engineering. Alistair Jacques A*AB / Rolls Royce Apprenticeship I ve been working hard towards getting a place on the Rolls Royce Apprenticeship scheme, so I m so relieved to have achieved what I was hoping for Record-breaking A-Level maths Results It has been a record breaking year for maths results, with over two thirds of students achieving an A*, A or a B. This unprecedented achievement for Driffield School is the result of students excelling in some of the hardest modules there is in A Level maths. Catherine Hogben, Director of maths, agrees that the results demonstrate the hard work and dedication of our students towards their studies and our teachers in helping them achieve the high grades they need to secure good university places. The fact that so many students achieved these grades is outstanding, I couldn t be happier. John Loftus, Trust Director of maths, said: I couldn t be more proud of all the students and staff; they have worked tirelessly and the results were thoroughly deserved. It s an outstanding result for Driffield School and we are all delighted. 7
Strong results for Year 11 Staff and students at Driffield School are celebrating following the release of this year s GCSE results. Students have risen to the challenge of the new GCSEs in English and maths, with 60% achieving a pass in both which is an improvement of 2% on last year. Over one fifth of students achieved the new higher grades of 7, 8 or 9 in maths. There have also been significant improvements in English literature and across all the sciences: chemistry, physics, biology and additional science. Alongside these strong performances in the core curriculum subjects, the students have excelled in the arts with over a quarter of students sitting art and drama achieving A*/A with over half of our musicians achieving an A*/ A. There are many excellent individual performances, with eight students achieving the very top marks in all of their subjects. Fifteen students achieved an A* in all of the triple science GCSEs: biology, chemistry and physics. We are all absolutely delighted with these well-deserved results. This year group worked extremely hard, taking up all the opportunities for intervention, which included holidays and some Saturdays. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and students for all their hard work this year. - Diane Pickering, Head of school GCSE maths new record MATHS LEAD THE WAY WITH RECORD-BREAKING RESULTS The national picture was complex this year, with the new GCSEs in English and maths, which had both more challenging content and new numerical grades. Students are now able to access a higher grade 9, the equivalent of an A**, which 7 of our cohort achieved in maths. 8
Ewan Willingham I ve got an A* in all three sciences, as well as maths I am super happy! Bethany Dinsdale-Young I m really pleased with my results especially to get the triple A* in science, which I m continuing with for my A Levels, along with maths Lauren Dinsdale-Young I m so pleased that I ve achieved everything that I hoped for. I m now looking forward to starting my A Levels where I m going to study chemistry, physics, biology and geography. Eden Sedman I m shaking! I am so happy and feeling really great right now. Chloe Hills I m thrilled with my results, especially food technology and health and social care. I m excited now about moving on to do history, geography and food at A Level. John Jacques I had really hoped to achieve the A*s in science, so I feel like my hard work has paid off. It also means I can continue with the sciences, along with maths, for A Levels. Eliza Burdass I feel awesome! I was hoping to achieve 7s, but to get all 9s, I can t believe it! George Mellonby I ve been working hard to achieve these results, so I m really happy to have achieved all the grades I hoped for 9
Best GCSE results in 5 years This year we are celebrating our best GCSE results for 5 years. Firstly a special mention must go to the 12 students who achieved grade 9 in English or maths. Eliza Burdass and Daniel Mckean achieved grade 9s in English and maths and Riona Welburn achieved grade 9 in English Language and English Literature. Sophie Annall worked exceptionally hard and exceeded her target grade in English. This is a fantastic achievement considering how reformed GCSEs are more rigorous and challenging overall. Science results were excellent this year with chemistry leading the way. The percentage achieving A*-C in chemistry was 95%, physics was 90% and biology was 89%. With 10 of our students moving on to join our thriving sixth form with the aim of a career in medicine this was a super result! This includes John Jacques (who achieved 9 GCSEs at A*/A) who wants to become a doctor and has already signed up to the sixth form s Medsoc programme. This follows on from his brother s super exam results in 2017 at A Level. Success must run in the family. Other successes included music who achieved a remarkable 96% A*-C with 55% achieving an A*/A pass. We now have the highest number of students studying A Level music in the East Riding! Eden Sedman who is going on to study music A-Level said I m shaking! I am so happy and feeling great right now. Other subjects that achieved A*-C pass rates well above the national average were PE with 82% (15% above the national average). Gregor Napier said I m absolutely buzzing!! I got a 9 in maths, A* in chemistry and physics, as well as As in PE ad RE I ve done so much better than I expected! Religious Studies and food technology both achieved with 78% with Chloe Hills commenting I m thrilled with my results, especially food technology and health and social care. I m excited now about moving on to do history, geography and food at A Level and Tamsyn Coombs exclaiming I m still in shock!! I did better than I expected, with my best result of A* in religious studies. French also achieved 77% with a quarter of the grades A*or A and finally art also achieved a fantastic 72%. Our vocational courses are also worth mention with every subject achieving a 100% pass rate. A truly remarkable result and testament to the hard work of those students who chose the more vocational learning route we offer. Overall the 2017 GCSE results are an improvement on 2016 results despite English and maths GCSEs being more rigorous this year and form a great platform for further success at GCSE and A-Level in years to come. 10
