McClain Jeffrey Vincent From: Sally Kornbluth Re: Tuition and Fee Recommendations for FY 18/19 Consistent with past practice, we will present our formal recommendation for FY 18/19 tuition and fees to the Board of Trustees in February. Our agreement with the Board is to present tuition increase recommendations with explicit reference to the following factors: market factors (relative tuition ranking, strength of student demand); programmatic needs (the resources needed to sustain and improve academic quality in a competitive environment); Duke s commitment to affordability (the importance of Duke s fundamental commitment to effective financial aid programs that enable admitted students to meet the costs of a Duke education); and alternative revenue sources (access to resources from endowment income, annual gifts, sponsored research, executive education, etc.). In accordance with our commitment to the Board, I would now like to ask each of the Deans to develop a formal rationale for your FY 18/19 tuition proposal for all degree programs in your school. Any newly proposed fees should be explicitly highlighted and justified. I would like your proposals (approximately two to three pages in length, plus any supporting data) by Friday, January 12. This will allow time to review tuition rates and meet the February Board mailing date. You will find attached to this memo drafts of the graphs and tables we will include with the annual tuition proposal. This information includes current tuition rates at peer institutions as well as a five year history of each school s tuition rate. The data for FY 18/19 is based on the tuition forecast provided in your three year budget model last year and any subsequent adjustments made by your staff. We will update the graphs as needed once we receive your formal tuition proposal.
