1 BOZEMAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2410P INSTRUCTION High School Graduation Requirements Procedures Publication of Graduation Requirements Prior to registering, each student will be provided with a copy of the current graduation requirements. Graduation requirements shall also be included in student handbooks. Credit Hours Any course or program that will be applied for credit towards graduation must include a minimum of 135 hours of instruction per year for each unit of credit. Waiver of Requirements Graduation requirements will not be waived except in hardship cases. Under these circumstances, the building administrator may recommend to the superintendent, who may approve minor deviations from the graduation requirements. Graduation Plan Each student is to develop, update as necessary, and have on file a graduation plan approved by the parent. Counselors will provide assistance to incoming ninth graders and their families in developing educational plans. Changes in plans should normally reflect parent consent and should be submitted to the appropriate counselor. Early Graduation All students learn and experience success given time and opportunity, but the degree to which academic content standards are met and the time it takes to reach the standards may vary from student to student. The Board of Trustees believes that all students, including advanced learners, should be challenged and supported to reach their full potential. For some learners, this can best be achieved by affording them access to advanced coursework when they have demonstrated proficiency in the prerequisite course. Students may graduate early by completing graduation requirements before their 8 th semester in high school. Students who successfully complete graduation requirements within 7 or 6 semesters will be considered early-graduates having demonstrated proficiency through successful completion of all graduation requirements. Students who are interested in early graduation should meet with their counselor to complete a graduation plan. Part Time Status Any student who is enrolled in fewer than 7 classes may be considered a part-time student. A student, who is on-track for graduation by demonstrating proficiency in required coursework, may be enrolled in fewer than 7 classes in accordance with Policy 3150 and 3150P. Alternative Extension Programs Credit toward graduation requirements may, with the building administrator's prior approval, be granted for individual student experiences. Generally, credit for an alternative extension program will not replace a course required for graduation, but can be considered elective credit. Credit for work experience may be offered but only when the work experience program has been approved by the trustees and is supervised

2 by the school staff. Any course or program that will be applied for credit towards graduation must include a minimum of 135 hours of instruction per year for each unit of credit. A proposal for approval of alternative extension programs shall be submitted to the building administrator prior to the experience and shall be at no additional cost to the District. Approved programs shall be at no additional cost to the District and shall require that same time commitment that a regular high school course of equal credit would require. Application shall be made in advance and shall include at least the following information. Name of program Length of time for which approval is desired Objectives of the program Description of how credits shall be determined Content outline of the program and/or major learning activities and instructional materials to be used Description of how student performance will be assessed Qualifications of instructional personnel Plans for evaluation of program. In addition, the application must apply to all aspects of Montana School Accreditation Standards and Procedures Manual, Credit for Correspondence, Distance Learning, Online, Technology Delivered Courses General Expectations / Guidelines for Online Coursework Face-to-face instruction is the most effective method of learning and students will be encouraged to enroll in District courses as the first option. The preferred method of online coursework is the Montana Digital Academy (MTDA), given that the course standards are based on Montana curriculum standards. Other correspondence delivery models (such as North Dakota Independent Study or BYU) can be approved by the Administration, but only after MTDA has been considered. All online course requests should be considered as part of the student s graduation plan and therefore must be reviewed by a counselor in the context of the graduation plan prior to a request for approval and registration for the course. All online coursework will be placed on the student transcript and the grade will be used in the GPA calculation, unless the course is taken as Pass/Fail and student receives a Pass grade. In general, deadlines regarding drop/add dates are set by MTDA, or other correspondence programs and should be followed. (For example, if a student drops an MTDA course after the drop date, the course grade will be reflected as an F and that grade will be posted on the transcript and calculated in the GPA.) When online coursework is to be used for a graduation requirement and is taken during the second semester of the senior year the coursework must be completed by May 1. Any costs associated to online or correspondence coursework are the responsibility of the student or parent/guardian. There is no guarantee that a location for online coursework will be available at school. Procedures for requests for online coursework: Students request to take online coursework for a variety of reasons. Generally, the majority of requests fit within a standard circumstance. However, there may be times when the request is made for an unusual

3 circumstance and the needs of the individual student should be considered. This would be considered a nonstandard circumstance. The following guidelines will be used to address all student requests. Standard Circumstances: (Approved with no restrictions regarding number of online courses allowed) Given the following list of circumstances, online coursework will be approved with no limit or no restrictions regarding the total number of online courses/credits allowed. However, all requests for online courses must be reviewed by counseling staff and determined to be within the framework of the graduation plan. Part-time students: (Guidelines stipulated in 3150P) Students who apply for and are approved for part-time attendance may access online coursework with no restrictions regarding the total number of credits taken online. Part-time status is granted for one of the following reasons: o Financial: An unreasonable financial burden on the student, parent or guardian. o Medical: A hardship related to the student's, parent s, or guardian s health and well-being. o Educational: A hardship related to the student s ability to pursue his/her educational program or other gifts/talents. (IE - Bridger Ski Foundation) IEP/504 Students: Online requests may be granted with no restrictions when the request is related to a standard accommodation in an IEP or 504. Homebound Students: (As defined by 2165) Online requests may be granted with no restrictions when the student is placed in homebound status. Homeschool Students: When approved, a registered homeschool student may access MTDA online coursework with no restrictions on the number of courses. In order access a MTDA course, homeschool students must enroll in at least one on-campus course. In most circumstances, homeschool students are not seeking to achieve a BHS diploma. However, if they are seeking a BHS diploma, they should apply for part-time attendance status as defined by the criteria for part-time attendance above. Credit Recovery: Students may use online coursework for credit recovery when they have received a failing grade in any course. The preferred method of credit recovery is the MTDA credit recovery program. Students who are completing credit recovery through an online option may be required to (or will be scheduled) in the credit recovery lab with progress monitored by the online coordinator. Improving Comprehension: Students may use online coursework for the purpose of retaking a course to improve course grade and/or improve comprehension of course standards. The new course grade will be used in GPA calculation. Enrichment: Students may use online/correspondence coursework to access curriculum that is not offered by the BSD7 program of study. Credit for these classes will be granted when the coursework is part of an accredited program. Students who wish to use enrichment coursework to meet BHS graduation requirements must have prior administrative approval and a conversation with a counselor regarding the most appropriate on-line program. Acceleration/early graduation: As part of an approved early graduation plan, students can access online coursework with no restrictions regarding the number of credits allowed. In addition, students may access online classes to accelerate their course of study with the intention of attaining a higher level of coursework before graduation. (For example: a student who seeks to take calculus prior to graduation may want to accelerate their math coursework during summer break by taking an online course.) In all circumstances of acceleration, students must meet prerequisite course requirements.

4 Scheduling Conflict: In all circumstances, counseling staff will attempt to mitigate scheduling conflicts prior to recommending an online course. In some circumstances students may access online courses when they are unable to schedule a course due to a conflict, a class overload, or if their schedule is full. Placement in specific district program; for example A2X program. Nonstandard Circumstances: (Approved with restrictions regarding the number of online courses/credits allowed) Any online course request that does not meet one of the standard circumstances as defined above will be approved with the following restrictions: The course must be taken through the MTDA, following the appropriate drop/add deadlines set by MTDA. Course prerequisites must be met. The course must be reviewed by a guidance counselor with consideration of how the course fits into the student s graduation plan. Students may be monitored by the online coordinator and should be expected to comply with rules and procedures of the online coordinator or school counselor. Students who do not demonstrate consistent progress in their online course may be assigned to attend class in the online support center. A total of 1.5 total credits will be allowed with the following grade level restrictions: o Freshman credit o Sophomore - Senior - a total of 1.0 credit over the course of three years A maximum of 1.0 credit in Health Enhancement is allowed. English IV is not allowed as an option for online credit under a nonstandard circumstance. For second semester classes that require a first semester prerequisite, successful completion of the first semester prerequisite with a grade of C or better is required. Credit allowances may accumulate as students move to the next grade level. (For example, if a student does not access online courses/credits during their freshman year, they are allowed to take a total of 1.5 credits during their sophomore through senior years.) Credits for high school courses taken in middle school Only courses taken after the last day of grade 8 will count toward high school graduation, unless the student has been approved by the middle and high school administration to enroll in a high school course at Bozeman High School and the instruction is delivered on the BHS campus. For a middle school student wishing to take a high school course, enrollment in the course is dependent on space availability. Algebra 1 and First Year World Language courses taught at the middle school are considered middle school courses and are not eligible for high school credit. Middle school students who wish to enroll in Geometry or Algebra 2 are encouraged to take those courses on the high school campus whenever possible. However, if there is a conflict with the schedule or there is no space available in the high school course, middle school students may enroll in MTDA and will be granted high school math credit upon enrollment in the high school. Middle school students, who are taking an online course (other than Geometry or Algebra 2) prior to the 9 th grade, may be granted general elective credit upon enrollment in the high school. For courses, either taken at the high school or taken online through MTDA, course grade and credit will be placed on the transcript when the student enrolls at the start of the 9 th grade year. Students who are interested in pursuing high school courses before the start of 9 th grade should be aware that the grade and

5 credit for their performance in that course will be reflected on the high school transcript and will be calculated in the high school GPA. Transcripts Transcripts shall reflect work taken both inside and outside of the regular District course offerings. This shall include university courses, correspondence courses, home school courses, courses taken in other schools/districts. Dual Credit or University Enrichment Courses Dual credit allows high school students to simultaneously earn credit toward both a high school diploma and college coursework that can lead to a postsecondary degree or certificate, or toward transfer to another college. The primary purpose of offering dual credit courses is to deliver high quality, introductory, college level courses to high school students. The Bozeman School District has dual credit partnerships through Memoranda of Understandings with participating institutions. Students interested in dual credit opportunities must meet with their school counselor to determine available options. Students should be aware of Montana High School Association on-campus attendance eligibility requirements for activity participation. As per Policy 2168, student must be at least a sophomore and have an overall weighted GPA of 3.0, or be accepted by the university, or be given special permission to enroll by the course instructor. High school credit may be granted for dual enrollment courses when there is a dual enrollment agreement between the District and the university. High school credit may be granted for University Enrichment Courses when the University course instructor is endorsed under Montana teacher certification requirements. High school credit for online dual enrollment or university courses will be granted as per the online credit restrictions described earlier in this procedure. IEP Diploma Requirements For students with disabilities, the IEP Team may waive specific graduation standards and prescribe an alternative course of study. The IEP team should consider and document a variety of relevant information when considering graduation requirements for a student with a disability: Whether the student will graduate based on the district s graduation requirements Whether the student will graduate based on substantial completion of IEP goals Whether the student will age-out of education services without receiving a diploma, due to a lack of completion of credits or IEP goals and the district policy on the age through which educational services are provided to students The impact of modified curriculum and graduation standards on post-secondary transition goals Those students who successfully complete an alternative graduation plan through the mastery of the goals of an Individual Education Program (IEP) shall be eligible for graduation and be awarded a Bozeman High School Diploma.
