3 First-time Transfer Students Highlights Fact Book, 2017 First-time Full-time Transfers - Fall 2017 In Fall 2017, there were 737 newly enrolled first-time full-time transfer students, representing an increase of 7% from Fall 2016 (688). The most prominent ethnic groups among the Fall 2017 first-time full-time transfer students were White (64%), Black/African American (20%), and Two or More Races (5%). Female students comprised 49% of first-time full-time transfer students. First-time full-time transfer students consisted mostly of students between the ages of 20 and 22 (60%) and less than 20 years of age (22%). In Fall 2017, more in-state transfer students enrolled (53%) than out-of-state students (43%). International students comprised 4% of the non-in-state transfer students. In Fall 2017, 28% of first-time full-time transfer students originated from the immediate five-county service area of Dillon, Georgetown, Horry, Marion, and Williamsburg counties. Approximately 25% originated from other South Carolina counties. Of the 737 first-time full-time transfer students in Fall 2017, 74% transferred 30 credit hours or more. Approximately 1% of first-time full-time transfer students had not declared a major in Fall The five most popular majors for transfer students were: Exercise and Sport Science (9%), Management (9%), Marine Science (7%), Marketing (6%), and Biology (5%). Migration and retention trends of 2016 first-time transfer students The number of students (761) who transferred to the University in 2016 decreased by 4% from Transfer students who came from other South Carolina higher education institutions comprised approximately 48% of the total transfer student population in The majority of in-state transfer students (50%) were previously enrolled at Horry Georgetown Technical College.
4 The first-year student retention rate for 2016 transfer students was 73%, representing a decrease of 1% from There were a total of 688 first-time full-time transfer students enrolled at the University in Fall Of the 2016 transfer student cohort, 502 students chose to continue their studies at the University the following year. The one-year retention rate for the Fall 2016 cohort is 73% which is higher than the one-year retention for the Fall 2015 cohort (74%). In geographic origin, 269 (54%) continuing students were native to South Carolina and 233 (46%) students were from other U.S. states or international origins. Among the academic colleges, the continuation of first-time full-time transfer students from Fall 2016 to Fall 2017 was: Wall College of Business Administration (77%), Spadoni College of Education (71%), Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts (74%), College of Science (71%), and University College (77%).
