1 Exchange studies in Biomedical Laboratory Science
2 Exchange studies in Biomedical Laboratory Science Full programme information 180 Higher Education Credits, 3 years. Before a patient can be given the right diagnosis and treatment, some form of laboratory medical analysis or physiological examination is usually required. This is the responsibility of the biomedical scientist, who consequently has a key part to play in the chain of care. Biomedical laboratory science is the science of the methods used to analyse biological samples and physiological functions, particularly in the healthcare sector. To start with, students go through the structure and function of the human body from a macro to a micro level. They are also given an introduction to their future career and a general grounding in biomedical laboratory science. In subsequent terms, students probe more deeply into the analytical methods used to identify diseases such as diabetes, infections, cancer or chromosomal disorders. Analytical methods include the biochemical, immunological, and molecular genetics, and are applied, for example, to blood, tissue or urine. Students can also choose methods used to examine the cardiovascular or pulmonary systems, the brain, nerve system and kidneys, such as ECG, ultrasound, spirometry, EEG and isotope analysis. After graduation Authorised biomedical scientists work in hospital laboratories in fields such as clinical chemistry, genetics, pathology, microbiology, immunology or transfusion medicine. Students specialising in physiology can also work in areas such as clinical physiology, neurophysiology or nuclear medicine. Biomedical scientists also work at healthcare centres or veterinary surgeries, in the pharmaceutical industry or medtech companies, and in the fields of food hygiene, biotechnology, health promotion, and sports medicine. Options in English Laboratory Medicine For exchange students without very good command of the Swedish language, the Biomedical Laboratory Science Programme offers options in English as presented below. Courses and projects All courses are full-time courses and require at least 40 hours of work per week. A student can only attend one course at a time. 1
3 One study week is equivalent to 1.5 ECTS credits The performance will be graded in accordance with the ECTS grading scale and on the basis of the student s fulfillment of the learning outcomes stated in the course syllabus.
