2 CURRENT AND FUTURE EVENTS VICE PRESIDENT Charlene Walker Office of Multiculturalism & Inclusion (OMI) OMI will offer Diversity training for all new employees. The training is mandated for new hires to complete within their 1 st year of employment at BCTC. Therefore, please allow time in your schedule for the training. Training is also available for any senior faculty members who wish for the training as professional development or brown bag. King Humanitarian Award Need Advising Multicultural Students can be advised for his or her classes in the upcoming semesters. Erin Howard or Wendell Sparks in OB 211 can assist by appointment. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COORDINATOR Wendell Sparks,Int l Student/Scholar Services Coordinator develops, implements, and manages international student recruitment, and retention activities. Mr. Sparks advises and counsel prospective students and scholars on admission and F-1 and J-1immigration requirements. Also, Wendell serve as primary school designated official and Responsible Officer for compliance and insurance of Sevis Documents for the F-1 and J-1 visas; advising students on federal regulations and personal cultural adjustment. 3 Hispanic Outreach Coordinator Erin Howard, Bluegrass Outreach Coordinator is responsible Leads BCTC s efforts to serve the growing Hispanic community in Lexington and Central Kentucky. Develop a rich cultural and family oriented environment in which students feel accepted and able to succeed. Assist students in all process (admissions, advising, etc. during their enrollment at completion of an associate s degree, certification, or Pre-baccalaureate study. Coordinate cultural and social events that unite all students and all individuals within BCTC and the community. Provide for students a mentoring program composed of community leaders and professionals as well as faculty, staff, and established students of BCTC. Advise Latino Student Organization, Enlace. Serve as bi-lingual resource for BCTC faculty staff students, and alumni. 5 MENTORING PROGRAM James Chambers provides mentoring with high and middle schools students administrating the Black and Brown Program. Also, his is the director of the Intramural Sports Program. In addition to mentoring, James is actively serving on the Black Student Leadership Caucus Committee with Omar Rasoul and assist with committee assignments and Recruitment Fairs. The mentoring program offers workshops that concern the plight of the African Male, and how the community awareness and involvement can help make a change. 6 Teams will play the round 1 games first until all of the first round is complete, once every game from round one is complete you will move on to round two. Continue this until all rounds have been played. The team with the best record after all games are completed wins the tournament. If two teams are tied the team that defeated the other team during play would place higher. 7 Carnegie Hall Camp Orientation consists of a week-long Academic Summer Camp which will continue throughout the year with a bi-monthly Saturday learning activity. The bi-monthly Saturday learning approach will employ high touch, (face to face) and high tech (internet) interface with the students. Each of the students will be assigned a significant adult other as a coach. This year-long activity will build the road to Carnegie Hall, and intense 4 week academic immersion camp for summer The 2009 camp orientation will consist of 20 high School juniors from all over Kentucky. These students will be participants of this year s, week camp. These students will be selected with input from educators, religious leaders and community citizens from each of the KCTCS institutions. The 20 scholars will in turn each be assigned a middle school team mate who will partner, accompany and participate with them in the yearlong Saturday activities LSAMP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE IN MULTICULTURALIS & INCLUSION OFFICE OR CALL CARNEGIE HALL 2009 CARNEGIE HALL 2008 The partners of the National Science Foundation Kentucky- West Virginia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) have a goal of creating diverse campus environments and increasing underrepresented group Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree production. The approach incorporates six identified characteristics of successful programs in a manner tailored for the Alliance institutions and the two states. The focus areas for our approach are: Recruitment and retention Research experiences Campus climate Curriculum reform Postgraduate career aspirations & role models

The Purpose The Bluegrass Community and Technical College Office of Multiculturalism and Inclusion in efforts to raise awareness of opportunities and strategies needed to promote inclusive working and learning environments invite your participation in a conference agenda highlighting the following subjects; Implementation of institutional change, understanding organization structure and power structure, benefits of going beyond compliance, confronting fundamentalism, disseminating information without offending and much more needed information and dialogue. This conference is a must for educators, administrators and all persons interested in making organizational inclusion a priority in their workplace.
