2 GLOBAL EDUCATION Our world can be made better if today's youth learns to understand and appreciate its cultural and linguistic diversity. Young people benefit from experiences that complement their classroom learning, help them develop an awareness of their role as world citizens, and instill in them an ability to enjoy and adapt to diversity and change. Opportunities to participate in such experiences must be accessible and affordable.

3 GLOBAL EDUCATION Immersion is the best way to become acquainted with another country s people, heritage, and values. Living with a family provides a warm and secure setting for experiencing another culture. Programs without host family experiences should involve students as closely as possible in the culture and life of the country in which they stay.

4 GLOBAL EDUCATION Communication is the key to understanding culture. Knowledge of language, an eagerness to improve communication skills, and a curiosity for learning encourages a higher level of understanding. The friendships that result from the sharing of family and cultural life increase communication, growth, and understanding across borders. Global learning promotes lifelong global connections.

5 EXPERIENCED LEADERS IN THE INDUSTRY SPP International Scholars Program is one of several programs offered by Nacel Open Door (NOD). NOD, a nonprofit organization, was formed in April 1997 by the merger of Nacel Cultural Exchanges and Open Door Student Exchange. For over 60 years, NOD has helped facilitate successful home-stays for thousands of international students and local Host Families. Nacel Open Door has diversified its programs further by: Developing an online education program with a curriculum that fits the needs of pre-school through high school aged students. Partnering with k-12 schools in the U.S., Korea, Poland, China, the Philippines, France, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Japan. Language acquisition, experiential learning, global exploration, formal college preparatory education, and advanced online learning have become the hallmarks of Nacel.

6 SPP INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM OBJECTIVES To promote international understanding, with a focus on culture and language. NOD programs should lead participants to discard stereotypes and discover the realities of other cultures and peoples. To increase awareness of the importance of understanding other cultures and to stimulate interest in community support of language and international education. To offer opportunities for students to improve communication skills and learn first-hand about the culture of countries. To provide a rewarding experience for both students and the host community.

NOD is a founding member of the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel, and helped to establish the standards used to guide high school exchange in the U.S.

9 SPP INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM SUPPORT A Representative is assigned to each student and will maintain regular contact throughout their entire program. NOD Representatives are available to assist Host Families and students at all times and will work to help ease the integration process. NOD operates a 24-hour emergency helpline that is available to students, Host Families, and schools. A Travel Coordinator is also on call to provide travel assistance for arrival and return flights. NOD additionally provides Student Advisors trained in supporting the unique needs of international students. NOD strives to make every exchange experience a positive one.

10 ON-SITE STUDENT SUPPORT SPP International Scholar s have access to two on-site support personnel: Hill-Murray s Director of Enrollment, to assist with Hill-Murray programming and academics SPP International Scholars Director, to assist with integration, communication and specific program related issues

11 SPP INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR ACHIEVEMENTS SPP International Scholars are on track to attend University. The majority of SPP Scholars take Advanced Placement classes and earn opportunities for college credit. Consistently Score higher than the national average on SAT/ACT Placement Tests. Often take part in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, from arts and music to sports and science clubs.

16 ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING FOCUS AREAS OF SPP SCHOLARS ELL PROGRAM When students arrive at Hill-Murray School they will be tested to determine their current level of language mastery. All International students will be registered for an English Language (EL) class their first year at Hill-Murray School. This may be extended to subsequent years as needed.

19 ADMISSIONS FRAMEWORK The new student application deadline is January 18 th, Students who apply after the January 18 th deadline will be accepted on a rolling admission process. Go and choose SPP International Scholars Program to fill out the application. Students should plan to arrive in Minnesota by August 13 th. Arriving a couple of weeks early will allow students to settle into their new living situation, attend the new student orientations, take placement tests, and create their class schedule with their guidance counselor.
