1 Transition for CNA, 2007 Fall Page 1 of 6 First Year Guide for students in Transition Terms A & B at the College of the North Atlantic [approved by Faculty Council 2007 February 28] The Bachelor of Engineering degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland is a Co-operative Program in which regular full-time academic study is supplemented by four-month periods of full-time work in positions related to the student s future career. The Bachelor of Engineering degree is available in the following five programs: Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering. Students in each program may also choose to pursue Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering options in the last three terms of the program. These programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (CCPE) to June As of September 2008, the engineering undergraduate degree program will be modified to better reflect the changing needs of students. The new program incorporates changes that increase the flexibility of the programs for our students and reduces the overall length of time required to complete an engineering degree at Memorial. The normal mode of entry into the program will be direct entry from high school and the program will normally be completed in eight academic semesters, rather than the ten academic semesters currently required. The program will have a mandatory co-op format that will require students to complete four work terms. Transition program for students at College of the North Atlantic (CNA) attending Comprehensive Arts and Science (CAS) Transfer: College- University (Offered at: Burin, Carbonear, Grand Falls-Windsor, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and Labrador West Campuses) For students planning to pursue the Bachelor of Engineering degree program at Memorial, there will be a two-year transition program that will allow them to participate in the new engineering program in Academic Term 3 in Fall Students may apply for direct entry from high school into a transitional first year program at College of the North Atlantic in the academic year. Transition Programs Students who start the first-year transition program at College of the North Atlantic in Fall 2007, and who wish to be promoted to Academic Term 3 in the Fall semester of 2009, must follow the course of study in the charts below during the and academic years. 3 Transition for CNA, 2007 Fall Page 3 of 6 Admission to the First Year Transition Program at College of the North Atlantic ( Academic Year) To be eligible to enter the First Year Transition Program in Fall 2007 at College of the North Atlantic, the student must apply to the College and must meet the entrance requirements of the Comprehensive Arts and Science (CAS) Transfer: College-University program. The student must also meet the prerequisites for the courses in the Fall 2007 curriculum (see the charts above) as outlined below: Prerequisite for Math (MA1130) is high school Level III Academic Math (3204) and a score of at least 85% on the Math Placement Test (MPT), or high school Level III Advanced Math (3205) and a score of at least 75% on the MPT. Prerequisite for Chemistry (CH1140) is at least 75% in high school Chemistry (3202) and a pass in high school Advanced Math (3205). Co-requisite is MA1130. Prerequisite for Physics (PH1130) is successful completion of high school Physics (2204 and 3204). Corequisite is MA1130. Prerequisite for English (CM1120) is at least 60% in high school English (3201) or meet MUN s admission requirements. Note: If the above course prerequisites are not met on entry, there are other opportunities available at the College to assist students in meeting prerequisites (e.g. CAS College Transition). Fast Track Admission Exceptionally well prepared students may apply for direct entry into second-year engineering (Term 1 in September 2007) from high school. Direct admission into Term 1 is normally based upon a student being admitted to the university, having an admission average of at least 80% and having advanced placement equivalent to university credit in one of the following categories: Category I: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry Category II: Mathematics and Physics Category III*: Mathematics and Chemistry Category IV*: Mathematics *Students admitted under this category will be required to complete self-study material on electricity and magnetism and pass a competency test on the material prior to admission to Term 1. (Details of the selfstudy material and test can be found at under Undergraduate/Fast Track Admission.) Admission to the Bridging Programs The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science has bridging programs that allow certain diploma graduates to enter the engineering program with advanced standing. For the academic year, the bridging programs consist of two academic terms: fall and winter, followed by entry into Academic Term 4 of the appropriate discipline.
4 Transition for CNA, 2007 Fall Page 4 of 6 For further information please consult the University Calendar at Admission Through Advanced Standing Students are occasionally admitted to later terms in Engineering from within MUN or from other institutions. Such entry is normally based on a detailed analysis of the student s record and is handled on a case-by-case basis. Such students should contact the Office of the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies). Applications to Engineering For students taking the first-year transition program at College of the North Atlantic, applications to the second year of the transition program for Fall 2008 (to be completed at Memorial St. John s Campus) must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar no later than March 1, A complete application package includes an application to Engineering, an application to the University (for those who have not attended Memorial University of Newfoundland in the two preceding semesters,) and any other required supporting documentation. Application fees must be paid when the application forms are submitted. by writing to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John s, NL, A1B 3X5 or to the Office of the Registrar, Admissions Office, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John s, NL, A1C 5S7. Admission to the Faculty is competitive for a limited number of placements. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the engineering program. The final decision on admission to the engineering program rests with the Admissions Committee of the Faculty. The primary criterion used in reaching decisions on applications for admission is the Admission Committee s judgment of the likelihood of an applicant succeeding in the program. Further information can be obtained by e- mail at adeanugs@engr.mun.ca or by telephone at (709) Application forms are available in person from the Faculty s General Office (room EN4019) and the Office of the Registrar or through the Faculty s website at Application forms may also be obtained
