1 PROPOSED GENERAL EDUCATION CORE CURRICULUM In order to comply with general education guidelines mandated by the State of Ohio, the FS Core Curriculum committee is proposing the following general education requirements. This proposal is based on the general education core approved in 2005 and modified in 2008; any proposed changes from this version of the general education core are highlighted in yellow: All courses in our general education core must be approved by OBOR for inclusion in the University of Toledo OTM All students must complete OTM coursework from the following categories: 6 hours composition, 6 hours humanities, 6 hours social sciences, 6 hours natural sciences (includes at least 1 hour of lab), 3 hours mathematics 1 Students may not select more than one course in the humanities category from the same discipline 2 Students may not select more than one course in the social sciences category from the same discipline 2 All students must complete an additional 9 hours of OTM coursework from categories determined by individual degree programs OTM courses in the interdisciplinary category cannot be used to satisfy the first 27 hours but can be used to satisfy the remaining 9 hours 1 Approved OTM courses are provided beginning on page 3 of this document 2 This requirement is not mandated by the State of Ohio Page 1 of 9

2 PROPOSED MULTICULTURAL CORE CURRICULUM We are also proposing to maintain our multicultural core curriculum in addition to the proposed general education core. Unlike the general education core, the multicultural requirement is not required by the State of Ohio: Students must complete 6 hours of approved multicultural coursework Multicultural courses will be in addition to the 36 hour general education requirement There will be three categories of multicultural courses: foreign languages, non-western cultures, and diversity of US culture Students must select at least one course from any two of these three multicultural course categories Courses from the non-western and US diversity categories can be selected from the current list of multicultural courses Courses from the foreign languages category can be selected from any foreign language course included in the previous general education core Students may satisfy one of their multicultural course requirements with any course that simultaneously fulfills the general education core requirements 1 1 Multicultural courses are indicated in the OTM course list that is provided beginning on page 3 of this document Page 2 of 9
