8 transforming our world Supporting Undergraduate Scholarships at Temple University Ever since my uncle, an alumnus, took me to Temple football games when I was a kid, I wanted to go to Temple. But it wouldn t have been possible to leave Delaware and attend college out of state if it weren t for financial aid. I m working on my health professions degree, volunteering in a special education school, and I m proud to be an Owl. Lauren Frabizzio, CHPSW 14 Temple s 28,000 undergraduate students are the lifeblood of the university. They create Temple s campus culture, they drive academics and student activities, they determine Temple s local and global reputation, and, as future alumni and leaders, they set the course for Temple s future. Financial aid to undergraduate students enables Temple to fulfill its most essential function enabling bright, motivated students to attend college and gain access to the greatest opportunity of their lives. But more than that, for the students, financial aid allows them to make their marks on the world absent stifling debt or compromise. The majority of students hail from within Pennsylvania many from Philadelphia itself but also come from all 50 states and more than 123 countries. The undergraduate student body is one of the most diverse in the state, with more than half being female and more than 41 percent non-white. They also are among the best and brightest students in the country: Their average SAT scores are nearly 100 points higher than the national average and their graduation rate is 10 percent above that of their peers at other institutions. Temple undergraduates go on to be journalists, nurses, teachers, actors, engineers, entrepreneurs. Many will continue their educations through advanced study, becoming professionals and leaders in their fields. 9 transforming our world Supporting Honors Students at Temple University I had applied to six different universities when a friend suggested Temple. Ultimately, their Honors program and the financial aid package I received made the difference. Between Temple Honors and not having the specter of debt hanging over me, I have been able to double major, work as the executive producer and lead anchor of the Owl Sports Update for TUTV, and intern with the Eagles and the Flyers. 10 transforming our world Supporting Graduate and Professional Students at Temple University Being a graduate student is a full-time job; it takes a lot of time and resources to begin to master a field. I could not have done it without financial support, which allowed me to buy critical data and materials necessary for my dissertation, and to work full-time on the project, including through the summer. Because of that support, I was able to complete my Ph.D., and to do it in time to accept a new position as an assistant professor at Winston Salem State University in North Carolina. Richard G. Moye, CLA 11 Temple s nearly 10,000 graduate and professional students are among the most committed and accomplished at the university. Their career paths require intensive study and training, and many become so deeply invested in a subject that they want to follow their educational paths as far as they can go. It is no coincidence that these men and women often go on to become the teachers or role models in their fields. With 226 graduate and professional degrees available, Temple ranks as one of the most diverse and comprehensive public research institutions for graduate education in the United States. And with degree programs such as dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy and podiatric medicine, Temple University is the fourth largest provider of professional education in the country and prepares the largest body of professional practitioners in Pennsylvania. 11 transforming our world Temple 20/20 Scholarships: Investing in the Local Community For seventy years we of Temple University have taken the community s sons and daughters, kept them with us for awhile, then returned them to give to Philadelphia and its environs better homes, better schools, better health, more happiness, more civilization. Temple s third president, Robert Livingston Johnson, in 1954, in his speech The Case for Temple University Temple draws students from all around the world, but in Philadelphia specifically it serves as a beacon of educational opportunity for students across the city. Since its founding, a critical strength of Temple University has been its close relationship to the city and community that surrounds it. A true urban campus with permeable boundaries, Temple University both reflects and shapes the city of Philadelphia. Forty-three percent of incoming freshmen come from the Philadelphia area, and many of them stay in the area after they graduate a full one in seven of college graduates in the Philadelphia region holds a Temple degree, and Temple prepares the largest body of professional practitioners in Pennsylvania. The university and its neighbors grow and develop together, and in recognition of that fact Temple has created the Temple 20/20 Scholarships. Temple s 20/20 campus development plan seeks to deepen the university s commitment to its community. As part of that initiative, Temple is providing more than 20 undergraduate scholarships every year through the year 2020 more than 250 in total to talented students hailing from the surrounding neighborhoods (the four ZIP codes that border Temple s Main Campus 19121, 19122, and 19133). These scholarships offer a unique opportunity to make an extraordinary impact on the university, its undergraduate student body and the development of North Philadelphia at large. Ever since founder Russell Conwell began tutoring local citizens late at night to accommodate their work schedules more than a century ago, the history of Temple and the city in which it lives has been intertwined.
