3 Studying Business and Economics Who studies Business and Economics? A degree in business and economics is one of the most sought-after programs at university. It is also one of the most-asked for by employers. All sectors of a modern economy rely on effective management, financial control and administration. A knowledge of business helps round out a CV. A depth of understanding in a particular discipline can take your CV from the list of maybes to the top of the pile. A qualification in business and economics provides an excellent generalist degree for many graduate positions. It can also provide the specialist knowledge to pursue focused careers in areas like accounting, banking and finance, human resources, marketing, systems analysis and more. To study business is to study how to make an organisation successful. As well as understanding the fundamentals of business, you ll develop workplace skills such as critical thinking, strategic analysis and measured decision-making. Economics will give you a detailed knowledge of micro and macroeconomic issues, both national and international. It can also help you understand how strategic decisions are made by individuals, by firms and by governments. with a business or economics degree A business or economics degree will provide a wide range of broad business fundamentals, and also allows you to choose specialist study areas to focus your career direction. Accounting Advertising Auditing and tax consulting Business consulting Business development Central banking Corporate finance Economics Electronic business Human resource management Industrial relations Information systems management Local, state and federal government Marketing and market research Merchant banking Public relations Services marketing Systems analysis Tourism Professional recognition Units and majors offered in the business and economics degrees give you the qualifications you ll need to apply for membership of various professional bodies. To be eligible, you ll need to successfully complete the units endorsed by that body. Membership details can be obtained from the appropriate professional body. Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia CPA Australia Australian Human Resources Institute Australian Institute of Australian Marketing Institute Chartered Institute of Company Secretaries in Australia Institute of Public Accountants Your study opportunities Different students have different goals. If you simply want to give yourself the best start for a better chance at a great career, a degree is an excellent option. If you want to pursue a passion or want more specialist knowledge and expertise in a chosen field, a combined degree or a degree with honours can give you fascinating career opportunities. Many of our courses also let you add units from different study areas. Degrees: Major and Minor (specialist) studies Studying a particular area of interest can focus your learning, research and communication skills. A single degree takes three years to finish and requires the successful completion of 24 units. Your major area of study represents eight of these units (two introductory, two intermediate, four advanced units). You can complement this knowledge with a linked minor. This is made up of four units (two introductory, two intermediate). Most students select one major (eight units), one minor (four units), degree electives (four introductory units) and six student electives and two breadth units. Combined degrees Combined degrees are pretty much exactly how they sound. A combined degree merges the core requirements of two different degrees. This lets you graduate with the equivalent of two degrees faster than it would take to do two separate degrees. Combined degrees can give you greater depth of knowledge in more than one area. This gives you more career options. If you re academically capable and want to challenge yourself, a combined degree is an ideal way to get the most from your time at university. A degree and a Bachelor of Economics degree can be combined with bachelor degrees in Arts, Information and Communication Technology, Laws or Science. Honours Honours can help you gain deeper knowledge in your specialist area. An additional Honours year can mean you start your career higher up the ladder and progress in your career faster. It can also lead to postgraduate study and a career in research or academia. Alternative entry pathway If you don t have the prerequisites for direct entry into a business or economics degree, an alternative entry pathway helps you get the qualifications you need to get into the course you want. One choice is a Bachelor of General Studies Foundation Year Pathway. Designed for mature age students returning to study, VET graduates or students with a low ATAR, the course gives you achievement at introductory level in at least two degree units. Alternatively, the University Preparation Program (UPP) offers mature age students, or those who did not complete year 11 and 12, the skills critical for success at university across a broad range of subjects. An AQF-recognised Diploma, or an Advanced Diploma in a Business related discipline from an Australian TAFE or other Registered Training Organisation, is another option. It may also mean you re eligible to be considered for advanced standing in a degree. If you have already started a degree at our University, or at an Australian or overseas tertiary institution, you may be eligible for advanced standing in a similar degree. At our University, you can further diversify, and improve your career options, by taking up units in another field of study from another faculty, like Arts, Science and Law. Depending on your chosen course, you may be able to combine learning on and off campus, or study part-time or online. Flexible study options can make it easy to fit study around your work and life commitments. Choose specialist studies to focus your career. Vice-Chancellor s National University Scholarships valued at $18,000 per year, for up to five years of study in any course 4 5

Application details and selection criteria for each award are clearly noted on our website and within the online application. See: utas.edu.au/scholarships-bursaries My internship was based a lot around social media content generation so it was really good for me to get that from a perspective in the workplace. Seeing an organisation employ their brand day to day and in every aspect was really interesting. Practical experience really shows if it s what you want to do and how you could actually really achieve good results. Georgina Gow Marketing Internship at Tourism Northern Tasmania 6 7

You can do this by taking out a HECS-HELP loan. HECS-HELP is available to eligible students enrolled in a CSP. This loan can cover all or part of the student contribution amount. You are eligible for HECS-HELP if you are an Australian citizen or the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa. Under this option, the Commonwealth Government pays the loan amount directly to the University of Tasmania. Then, when your salary reaches the minimum repayment threshold, you will make compulsory repayments through the tax system. Part-time students are charged on a pro-rata of study load undertaken. Students who are unable to pay the fee up-front can defer all or part of the fee through an element of the Higher Education Loan Program, known as SA-HELP. The fee contributes to funding student services such as legal and health services, counselling, and sport and recreation activities. You will also need to cover costs such as textbooks, materials, art supplies or software for your course. These costs can vary from course to course. Accommodation and general living expenses will also vary depending on your chosen living arrangements. To learn more about accommodation options, visit utas.edu.au/ accommodation 12 13
