1 International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Call for Nominations Recognition of Exemplary Contributions through Research on Service-Learning and DISTINGUISHED CAREER Background The International Association for Research on Service-Learning and recognizes individuals and teams whose research contributes significantly to understanding and advancing community engagement, across all approaches (e.g., service-learning, political engagement, field based internships, community-based research, community-engaged research) and all educational sectors (primary, secondary, and higher education as well as informal educational settings). We define research broadly to include work--grounded in any paradigm of scholarly endeavor--that critically and systematically investigates questions facing this transdisciplinary field of study in order to deepen knowledge and associated practice and policy. The purpose of our recognition process is to encourage, catalyze, support, share, and leverage high quality research. IARSLCE Recognition of Exemplary Contribution through Research on Service-Learning and is categorized into 3 types: Dissertation, Early Career, and Distinguished Career. Purpose The Distinguished Career Recognition acknowledges and celebrates intellectual leadership through a body of work that has broad and deep impact on service-learning and community engagement--including the study of it, the practice of it, and the cultures and systems within which it is undertaken. Eligibility Any scholar (or team of scholars) with a distinguished body of high-impact contributions, indicating sustained field-building commitment and activity. Scholar as used here encompasses those who self-define as researchers, scholars, practitioner-scholars, or scholar-practitioners and does not imply any particular academic status. Evaluation criteria 1. Depth and breadth of high quality research and scholarship as indicated by significant question(s), development of theoretical or conceptual frameworks, and innovative methods of inquiry and analysis in (a) one or more seminal works and (b) total body of work (including but not limited to traditional products and venues) 2. Impact on research and scholarship as indicated by (a) role in shaping scholarship agendas locally, nationally, and/or internationally, (b) adoption and/or adaptation of their work by other scholars, (c) role in building others capacity for high-quality research and

2 scholarship, (d) provision of scholarship opportunities (e.g., through centers, journals, conferences, grants), and (e) patterns of citation. 3. Impact on community engagement practice and/or policy as indicated by (a) contributions to conferences or other professional development venues, (b) record of teaching, mentoring, and collaborating with practitioners, (c) creation and/or application of conceptual frameworks or tools that address challenges of practice, and (d) role in change processes (within and/or beyond educational institutions) 4. Leadership as indicated by (a) reputation (local, national, and/or international), (b) collaborative spirit, (c) voice in the field, (d) integrity to the principles of high-quality research and scholarship and of high-quality community engagement, and (e) sustained contributions. Nomination packet 1. A one-page statement by the nominee articulating purposes, key contributions, and future directions (if applicable) 2. A tone-page cover letter from a senior scholar summarizing the nominee s contributions and establishing their significance in advancing knowledge, deepening research and practice, and/or impacting policy (co-authored letters are welcome) 3. A letter of support (not to exceed two pages) attesting to the quality and impact of the nominee s work (co-authored letters are welcome) 4. A current copy of the nominee's resume or curriculum vitae Recognitions process Nominations for 2017 recognitions are due by Wednesday April 5th, 2017 and should be submitted electronically to info@researchslce.org; self-nominations are welcome. Materials are reviewed by a selection committee composed of IARSLCE members, past recipients, and IARSLCE Board members; the IARSLCE Board receives and approves committee recommendations. All nominees will be notified of their status in early to mid July. Nominees and recipients will be invited to share about their work at the annual conference (September 14-16, 2017, in Galway, Ireland).

Eligibility Any scholar who has received a terminal degree in their discipline or profession within the past seven (7) years with an established and growing body of significant contributions, indicating promise for field-building. Scholar as used here encompasses those who self-define as researchers, scholars, practitioner-scholars, or scholar-practitioners and does not imply any particular academic status. Evaluation criteria 1. Promising evidence of depth and breadth of high quality research and scholarship as indicated by significant question(s), robust use of (or development of) theoretical or conceptual frameworks, and innovative methods of inquiry and analysis in (a) one or more seminal works and (b) total body of work (including but not limited to traditional products and venues)

Impact on research and scholarship as indicated by (a) role in shaping scholarship agendas locally, nationally, and/or internationally and (b) adoption and/or adaptation of their work by other scholars 3. Impact on community engagement practice and/or policy as indicated by (a) contributions to conferences or other professional development venues, (b) record of teaching, mentoring, and collaborating with practitioners, and (c) creation and/or application of conceptual frameworks or tools that address challenges of practice 4. Eligibility Nominees can be from any academic discipline (or interdisciplinary program) and must have successfully defended their dissertation between June 1, 2016 and June 15, Evaluation criteria 1. Significance of questions addressed in the dissertation for community engagement as a field of study, including how cutting edge or unique the topic is 2. Relevance and robustness of theoretical or conceptual frameworks used and/or developed 3. Innovativeness and quality of analysis, as indicated by rigorous and ethical methods of inquiry, in-depth analysis, and compelling conclusions. 4. Potential impact of results and conclusions (on research and scholarship, on practice, on policy, etc.)

Summary statement of the dissertation (not to exceed five single-spaced, typed pages), including: Purpose/Problem Theoretical/Conceptual Framework Methods and, if relevant, Data Sources Results/Conclusions Significance of the study for theory, research, practice, and/or policy related to service-learning and/or community engagement. 3. A one-page letter of recommendation from the nominee s dissertation chair 4. 7 International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Call for Applications GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS The International Association for Research on Service Learning and announces this year s Call for Applications for Graduate Student Scholarships. Ten recipients will each receive $500 to support their participation in the 2016 IARSLCE Conference in Galway, Ireland. Scholarship recipients fall into two categories: (a) early graduate students and (b) advanced graduate students. A total of ten scholarships will be awarded across the two categories. Within each category, at least one scholarship will be awarded to an international graduate student based outside the US. Background: The International Association for Research on Service-Learning and values graduate student participation, scholarship, and leadership in the work of understanding and advancing community engagement, across all approaches (e.g., service-learning, political engagement, field-based internships, community-based research, community-engaged research) and all educational sectors (primary, secondary, and higher education as well as informal educational settings). We define research broadly to include work--grounded in any paradigm of scholarly endeavor--that critically and systematically investigates questions facing this transdisciplinary field of study in order to deepen knowledge and associated practice and policy. The purpose of our graduate student scholarship process is to encourage, catalyze, support, share, and leverage high quality graduate student research and scholarship. Application packet: 1. Name, mailing address, phone number, and address 2. Institution, department, and advisor/program director 3. Date of entry into graduate program & date of anticipated graduation; are you a full-time or part-time graduate student? 4. Degree objective (e.g., MA, MS, PhD, EdD) 5. Have you previously received the Graduate Student Scholarship? If yes, please note the year(s) awarded. 6. Thesis, major paper/project, or dissertation topic (if known) 7. Did you submit a proposal to the 2017 IARSLCE Conference? 8. Describe your actual or potential involvement with the IARSLCE Graduate Student Network ( 9. If you are receiving support for attendance at the 2017 conference through other sources (scholarships, grants, awards) please indicate the source and amount. 10. Personal statement:

Early Graduate Students: A single-spaced statement not to exceed 500 words that clearly: 1) identifies research areas of interest and plans for pursuing them; 2) gives specific examples of how attendance at the conference will benefit the applicant s research and graduate education; and 3) explains how the applicant has been or is currently involved with service-learning and/or community engagement research and/or practice. b. Advanced Graduate Students: A single-spaced statement not to exceed 500 words that clearly: 1) identifies a research project, including research question and methods; 2) gives specific examples of how attendance at the conference will benefit the applicant s current and/or future research, remaining graduate education, and professional goals; and 3) explains how the applicant has been or is currently involved with service-learning and/or community engagement research and/or practice. Application process: Applications for 2017 graduate student scholarships are due by Wednesday April 5th, 2017 and should be submitted electronically to info@researchslce.org. Materials are reviewed by a selection committee composed of previous scholarship recipients, the Chair(s) of the IARSLCE Recognitions Committee, representatives from the Graduate Student Network, IARSLCE members, and IARSLCE Board members; the IARSLCE Board receives and approves committee recommendations. All applicants will be notified of their status in mid May to early June. Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the conference (September 14-16, 2017, in Galway, Ireland). Scholarship checks will be awarded at the conference.

9 Call for Reviewers IARSLCE invites members to participate in the review process that will determine the recipients of the recognitions and scholarships the Association will confer this year. Review committees are comprised of Board members, past recipients, and IARSLCE members. Ideal reviewers have a record of research in service-learning or community engagement, have been involved with the Association for one or more years, and have no conflicts of interest within the category they review. We encourage graduate students to apply to serve as reviewers. If you are interested in serving, please submit the following information electronically by Friday, March 24th to info@researchslce.org: (a) your name, role/position, and contact information, (b) a brief description of your previous and/or desired involvement with IARSLCE, and (c) a ranking of your review assignment preferences across the 4 review teams (graduate student scholarships, dissertation, early career, and distinguished career).
