4 Renfro Lectureship Program brings The Texas Tenors to NOC Tonkawa; tickets on sale now The Carl and Carolyn Renfro Endowed Lectureship Program is proud to announce that The Texas Tenors will be performing live on the stage in the Kinzer Performing Arts Center (KPAC) at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Wednesday, Sept. 28. This is another exciting event provided by the Lectureship Program and continues to demonstrate Renfro s commitment to bringing top notch speakers and entertainers to area community members at an affordable price. I want to make excellent speakers and top notch entertainers available to community members in this area and keep it reasonable. The Texas Tenors are an incredible group and have been sharing their wonderful vocals around the world since they appeared six years ago on NBC s Americas Got Talent competition. There will be a couple of options available for this event, dinner and the concert or just the concert. Whichever option you choose I don t think you will be disappointed. Renfro said. With their Emmy Award winning PBS special now airing across the country, and Billboard chart topping albums; it s easy to see why The Texas Tenors are America s favorite new tenors. Since their whirlwind debut six years ago on NBC s America s Got Talent, The Texas Tenors have accumulated a long list of awards, accolades and excited fans. They have performed more than 1,000 concerts around the world, including a 24-city tour in the United Kingdom, Shanghai, China and collaborations with some of the most prestigious symphonies, performing arts centers and arenas in the United States. People are clearly enjoying their talent as they were recently named the #10 Classical Artists in the world according to Billboard magazine. Tickets for the dinner and concert event are on sale now, and there will be two options available. The first option is a reserved table for eight for $300, which includes dinner in the Renfro Center at 6 p.m., doors open at 5:45 p.m., followed by the 7:30 p.m. concert with preferred seating in the lower section of the KPAC. The second option is the concert only for $15 on a first come, first served basis for seats in the upper section of the KPAC. The doors will open for the concert at 7 p.m. The dress attire is business casual. Tickets may be purchased with a credit card by calling or in person at the Development Office located in the Vineyard Library-Administration Building on the NOC Tonkawa campus. These programs are made possible through the generosity of former Oklahoma State Regent Carl Renfro and the late Carolyn Renfro who established the Carl and Carolyn Renfro Endowed Lectureship Program with a gift in The primary purpose of the endowment is to provide support to cultivate and enhance the cultural and community enrichment offerings in northern Oklahoma to include lecture and performance series at Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa and in the Ponca City area. This event is sponsored by the Carl and Carolyn Renfro Endowed Lectureship, the Renfro Family Foundation, and Northern Oklahoma College. If you have questions concerning this upcoming event or need additional information, please contact the Northern Oklahoma College Development Office at

5 Native American Youth Leadership Day held at NOC We need more students like you working in public schools, Dr. Dwight M. Pickering, American Indian education director for Oklahoma, told Native American youngsters gathered at Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa. Keynoting the sixth annual Native American Youth Leadership (NAYL) Day at NOC, Pickering said that Oklahoma leads the nation in the percentage of Native American students graduating from high school and Delegates to the sixth annual Native American Youth Leadership Day at NOC Tonkawa attend the Taking Charge conference. About 135 youth, sponsors and educators from the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma (charcoal shirts), Kaw Nation (green shirts), Osage Nation (gray shirts), Otoe-Missouria Tribe (purple shirts), Pawnee Nation (blue shirts), Ponca Tribe (teal shirts) and Tonkawa Tribe (red shirts) attended the event. (NOC Photo by Kyle Lomenick) stressed the importance of higher education. NOC is a good place to start, he said, and Pawnee College is in your back yard. There are 32 tribal colleges across the country waiting on you. He told the youth, We walk in two worlds the cultural side and the world we live in today. We need people of our own to look after us. Accompanied by tribal educators and sponsors, more than 120 youngsters from the Kaw, Osage and Pawnee nations and the Iowa of Oklahoma, Otoe-Missouria, Ponca and Tonkawa tribes engaged in activities designed to developing their leadership skills throughout their day of Taking Charge. Bunky Echo-Hawk, internationally known visual artist also known as an activist and educator, conducted an interactive drawing session designed to help students visualize taking charge of their own destiny, identify social problems within their communities and possible solutions and be aware of their cultural identity. We have been in survival mode for generations, Echo-Hawk said. We need to move from surviving to thriving. The session resulted in a painting of a Native American elder, entitled by the students Immortal. Wearing color-coded T-shirts indicating their tribal affiliations, the students attended rotating breakout sessions. Xan Black, Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance director, assisted by Emily Mortimer, directed students in activities designed to promote interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Electa Hare RedCorn, academic counselor for the Osage Nation, provided tips for dealing with stress. Jasha Lyons Echo- Hawk, a fighter for indigenous causes who works in Health Education/Community Health Resources for the Pawnee Nation, and Bunky Echo-Hawk discussed contemporary Native American issues. Letha Huddleston, outreach specialist with the Oklahoma College Assistance Program, spoke about Oklahoma s Promise scholarships for students entering grades eight through ten and gave tips to 11th and 12th graders on improving chances of obtaining scholarships. Practically every tribe offers scholarships, she said. Recipients of the annual NAYL awards presented by the Leadership Planning Committee were Deeon Joseph, Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma; Miranda Chance, Kaw Nation; John Bighorse, Jr., Osage Nation; Hudsyn Childs, Otoe-Missouria Tribe; Lacey Adson, Pawnee Nation; and Tracy Merritt, Ponca Tribe. The awards recognize students for their leadership, academic achievement and contribution to tribal culture. Showing the greatest knowledge of current events, history and tribal language and culture, the Ponca Tribe team pulled off its second consecutive Intertribal Challenge quiz bowl championship, retaining the traveling trophy and winning prizes. Also attending the Taking Charge Leadership Day were Buddha, a barred owl, and RB, a golden eagle, from the Grey Snow Eagle House. Students learned about the life and habits of these raptors from employees of the rehabilitation program developed by the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma near Perkins. Ryan RedCorn, founder and chief creative of Buffalo Nickel Creative in Pawhuska, served as emcee for the day. NOC President Dr. Cheryl Evans gave a welcome, commenting on the life-changing experience offered by the college and extending an invitation to tour the campus. Our students do great things, she said. Gina Conneywerdy, NOC Native American advisor and recruiter, and fellow Leadership Committee members, coordinated the Leadership Day. Committee members in addition to Conneywerdy included Sandy Tharp-Thee and Rochelle Vetter, Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma; Samantha Goodno, Karen Howe, and Opal Oranchak, Kaw Nation; Avis Ballard, Osage Nation; James Black, Logan Burgess, Alivia Molina and Gloree Tah, Otoe-Missouria Tribe; Alison Black and Christina Goodson, Pawnee Nation; Sarah Nelsen and Reagan Cole, Ponca Tribe; and Lisa Norman and November Allen, Tonkawa Tribe.

7 Upward Bound taking applications for the fall By Sally Asher, EnidNews.com 8/29/2016 Northern Oklahoma College Enid is making a difference in the lives of students in the area. Upward Bound, on Northern Oklahoma College Enid s campus, is a government-sponsored program that helps qualifying high school students successfully complete school and prepares them for college. To qualify, students must meet federal income guidelines and must be first-generation college students neither parent may hold a four-year degree. Upward Bound Director Erin McCoy said the program does more than prepare students for college. We are an opportunity and a safety net and a haven and a family, all in one, for those qualifying students, she said. We are in a unique position because we get to help first-generation college students get through high school the best they possibly can, make the best ACT scores they possibly can, find the most money and scholarships to go to college, and to get into the college of their choice. Students can join the program as early as their freshman year of high school, which McCoy said is best because they have those four years of high school to get their grades up and prepare to apply to college. Students work with volunteer tutors to build relationships and reach success in their academic goals, McCoy said. We take their triumphs and their failures and everything in between very personally, and we are so invested in each student by the time they graduate from high school, they are one of ours, she said. Each one of them is of great value and each of their lives is so valuable, and I hope they use them well. Throughout the academic year, students in Upward Bound will be able to participate in trips, including touring the Oklahoma State University campus and attending a Cowboys football game, seeing "The Nutcracker" in December, watching a Thunder game in March, and viewing "The Lion King" in Oklahoma City in May, McCoy said. We are also planning a big out of state trip for qualifying students next September, but we are still working out the details on that, she said. Upward Bound is still taking applications for this academic year, and McCoy said they have 15 slots open for high school students. For more information, visit and type Upward Bound in the search bar, or call McCoy at (580) Erin McCoy (left) wipes away a tear and then hugs Branson Debrum (center and right) as he gives a speech thanking teachers and tutors during the Upward Bound Recognition Banquet last year in Northern Oklahoma College's Montgomery Hall. Our 2017 Study Abroad trips are as follows: Italy & Greece Scotland & England Costa Rica Peru Ireland I ll be happy to visit with you or your parents regarding any of these exciting travel opportunities.
