10 WHY COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS SO YOUNG?! Help give students a sense of purpose, keep kids involved in school, and provide focus 1 "Studies have shown that if students have a goal or dream, they are more likely to be successful academically. 1 Assist students develop a college going identity (Erickson identity v role confusion) 2 1: 2: Ready, Willing, & Able M. 11 WHAT DOES COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS MEAN AT MIDDLE SCHOOL? ACT: Acquisition of the knowledge and skills a student needs to enroll and succeed in credit-bearing, first-year courses at a postsecondary institution, such as a two- or four-year college, trade school, or technical school. NACAC: Guidance in the later years of middle school, and particularly the time of transition to high school, can put students on a successful path to college education. At this stage, a counselor s role should include: Challenging students to see college admission and attendance as the goal after high school Encouraging students to assess their interests, strengths and academic habits Helping students understand basic concepts regarding college options and financing a college education Providing a template for the college preparatory curriculum that students should plan for high school years Encouraging students to understand how they can build a profile and support network that will help them reach their college goals

12 WHAT DOES COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS MEAN IN MIDDLE SCHOOL? Our research shows that, under current conditions, the level of academic achievement that students attain by eighth grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness by the time they graduate from high school than anything that happens academically in high school. This report also reveals that students academic readiness for college and career can be improved when students develop behaviors in the upper elementary grades and in middle school that are known to contribute to successful academic performance.

28 WHAT ARE STUDENTS LEARNING? Alvin Dunn Dragons are Going to College! Alvin Dunn 5th Graders Take On BizTown On Friday, March 11, 2011 Alvin Dunn Elementary School s fourth graders spent a day at California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM). Prior to their visit they received school counselor led classroom lessons about college and careers. They also filled out a college application, with highlights including: The 5th graders from Alvin Dunn Elementary School in San Marcos, CA participated in the Junior Achievement BizTown Program during the academic year. This hands-on program teaches students about economics, career opportunities, and money management through: I want to go to college because I want to learn new things, accomplish new things, and meet new people. Kevin Learning the standards-based curriculum on financial planning, work readiness, and good citizenship. I m most excited of going to college because I get to pick my own classes. Sandy Researching and applying for jobs of interest. When I grow up I want to be a teacher. Going to college is going to help me because I will learn how to do it. Mariela Practicing using a checkbook, balancing a bank account, and opening a savings account. I want to be a doctor and college helps you get a better career. Justin Visiting BizTown during which students worked in one of the 21 businesses such as Best Buy, City Hall, Cox Communications, Associated General Contractors, NBC Studios, Jack in the Box, U.S. Bank, Kaiser Permanente, SDG&E, Sea World, and State Farm Insurance. During their trip the students participated in the following activities: Balancing Your Budget Game - learning the value of a college education and money Question and answer session with CSUSM students Campus tour including classrooms, the library, the cafeteria, and the track Processing their experience through follow-up lessons about what they learned, in what ways their business was successful, and what they would do differently. Our students can apply what they learned to the future! The gracious funding provided by the Current Wisdom Foundation and support of Cal State San Marcos s Early Outreach Program allowed for the success of this great program. Thank you!!!
