1 TO BE PUBLISHED IN THE GAZETTE OF INDIA EXTRAORDINARY, PART III, SECTION 4 NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FASHION TECHNOLOGY NOTIFICATION New Delhi, the 5th March, 2012 NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FASHION TECHNOLOGY ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES ORDINANCES 2012 No. NIFT/DC/06-07/Degree/42.-In pursuance of sub-section (1) of section 27 of the National Institute of Fashion Technology Act, 2006 (No. 28 of 2006), the Senate in its 16 th meeting held on 13 th February 2012 made the Ordinances for Academic programmes of NIFT which had been ratified by the Board in terms of sub-sections (2) and (3) of the said section, in its 16 th meeting held on 24 th February, Short Title & Commencement 1 (1) These Ordinances may be called National Institute of Fashion Technology Academic s Ordinances 2012; (2) They shall come into force on 13 th day of February, 2012; Definitions In this Ordinance, unless the context otherwise requires 2 (1) Academic means the activities concerned with teaching, learning, training, evaluation/ examination, research with its various modes of presentation, and academic administration; (2) Academic Manual means the compilation of rules and regulations in academic matters; (3) Academic Plan means the schedule of all academic departments indicating academic work load and credits of various courses offered in each particular semester; (4) Academic means the sequence of academic activities leading to a Degree, Diploma or Certificate; (5) Academic Session means the period of one term/semester equivalent to 16 academic weeks (July- December / January June); (6) Academic Year means a period of two academic sessions (Fall and Spring) along with summer and winter breaks; (7) Applicant means an individual who applies for admission to any academic programme of the Institute ; (8) Centre means the Institute situated at New Delhi, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna, Rae Bareli, Shillong, or in any other place in India or abroad as may be set up under a decision of the Board; (9) Certificate means a programme of a duration of upto one year offered by the Institute as may be approved by the Board; (10) Convocation means the Convocation of the Institute for awarding degrees on completion of doctoral, postgraduate or undergraduate programmes; (11) Course means a complete body of prescribed studies constituting a curriculum for a full time or part time academic programme leading to the award of a Degree, Diploma or Certificate;

2 (12) Curriculum of a programme means a prescribed set of subjects with details of topics to be covered in each subject, evaluation parameters, credits, hours and other academic activities for individual s; (13) Degree means the Bachelor Degree, Master Degree, Doctoral Degree and such other degree of the institute as may be approved by the Board; (14) Diploma means a programme of a duration of more than one year and upto two years offered by the Institute as may be approved by the Board; (15) Elective means the optional subject/s offered in specialized fields to students in individual programmes; (16) End- Term Examination means examination conducted at the end of a term/semester during the specified dates; (17) Examination means the procedure used to evaluate the academic performance of a student as prescribed by the Senate from time to time; (18) Grade means a letter grade indicating the relative academic performance of a student in a subject; (19) Jury means a panel of faculty and/or external experts for evaluation of student s learning ; (20) Mentor means a faculty nominated by the Department or Centre to advise a student on academic and issues related to the institute; (21) Mid-Term Examination means the examination conducted during the middle of the term/semester during specified dates; (22) Moderation Policy means the policy of the institute to moderate grades awarded in different subjects in a semester as prescribed by the Senate from time to time; (23) Re-Examination means an examination conducted after declaration of results of a term/semester for the students who were unable to pass or could not appear in the scheduled examination; (24) Twinning means the Student Exchange with International Institutes for a period varying from one semester upto one year;

3 s Bachelor and Master Degree s Ph.D Degree 3 (1) (a)the institute may offer Bachelor and Master Degree programmes of such minimum duration as the Board approves on the recommendation of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board. Provided that the Standing Internal Advisory Committee Academic Management System recommends all such programmes. (b)the detailed courses of study for all degree programmes of the institute may be laid down in the regulations as framed under Ordinance 15 and published in the Institute admission prospectus. (c) The procedure for starting a new programme, change in the nomenclature of programme, temporarily suspending a programme or phasing out a programme may be as approved by the Board on the recommendation of the Senate. The process and procedures may be as laid down under (d)the minimum entry qualifications for admission to Bachelor and Master degree programmes may be such as may be laid down under (2) (a) The institute may offer Ph.D Degree programmes of such minimum duration as the Board approves on the recommendation of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board. Provided that the Standing Internal Advisory Committee - Research and the Senate recommends all such programmes; (b) The detailed courses of study for the programme and minimum entry qualifications for admission to the programme may be such as may be laid down in the regulations notified as Ph.D regulations of NIFT as framed under Diploma s (3) (a)the Institute may offer independent diploma programmes such as Industry oriented, Training of Trainers programme, full/part time by one department or jointly with other departments or in collaboration with other institutes, organizations and industry as the Board may approve on the recommendation of the Senate. Provided that the Standing Internal Advisory Committee Continuing Education and Diploma s recommends all such programmes. (b)the detailed courses of study for all diploma programmes of the Institute may be laid down in the regulations as framed under Ordinance 15 and published in the prospectus or brochure prepared for these programmes from time to time. Certificate s (4) (a)the institute may offer such programmes in the evening, on weekends and during vacations under the Continuing Education as recommended by Local Academic Standards Committee as per the regulations framed under Ordinance 15 and approved by Board through Senate. Provided that the Standing Internal Advisory Committee Continuing Education and Diploma s recommends all such programmes. (b) The institute may also offer such short term programme jointly with other institutes, organizations and industry as per the procedure laid down in the regulation framed under the

4 Ordinance-15 and published in the prospectus or brochure prepared for these programmes from time to time. Bridge (5) (a)the institute may offer bridge programmes and of such duration as approved by the Board to bridge Diploma programmes of the Institute to Degrees. Provided that the Senate approves such programmes on recommendation of Standing Internal Advisory Committee Academic Management System. (b) The process and procedures may be as laid down in the regulations as framed under (c) The detailed courses of study for the programme and minimum entry qualifications for admission to the programme may be such as may be laid down in the regulations as framed under

5 Admission 4 (1) (a) The admission requirements and procedures for all categories of students to various Degree programmes of the institute may be as recommended by Senate and approved by the Board. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under the (b) (c) The allotment of Course and Centre to a student may be made at the time of counseling by the institute on the basis of merit according to the preference of the student and the availability of seats. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under Every student admitted provisionally or otherwise to any programme of the Institute, may submit copies and originals of the qualifying degree/provisional certificate and such other documents as specified in the prospectus of the institute. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under the Bachelor and Master Degree s (d) The admission, provisional or otherwise, of any student who either does not submit the required documents by the stipulated date or fails to meet any other stipulated requirement for admission may be cancelled. The details may be as laid down under the (e) The admission of any student may also be cancelled, at any later time, if it is found that the student had supplied any false information or suppressed any relevant information for seeking admission. The details may be as laid down in the regulations as framed under the Ordinance 15 (f) (g) (h) The reservation of seats in various programmes for SC/ ST/ OBC/ PHP candidates may be as per the directives of Government of India. The institute may also offer supernumerary seats in various programmes for categories of students such as State Domicile Preferential, Foreign Nationals, Non-Resident Indian or for any other categories as may be decided by the Board, on the basis of merit, provided such categorization of students are not inconsistent with the provisions of the Act or directives of the Central Government. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the In case the seats reserved for SC/ST/OBC/PHP applicants are not filled even with the relaxed admission norms and the total number of such vacant seats exceeds 10% of total seats, the same may be filled up in the manner as may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the Ordinance 15. Ph.D Degree (2) (a) The admission requirements and procedures for all applicants to the Ph.D Degree programme of the institute may be as recommended by Senate and approved by the Board. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the (b) Every student, admitted provisionally or otherwise to any programme of the Institute, may submit copies and originals of the qualifying degree/provisional certificate and such other documents as specified by the institute. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the

Fee Bachelor and Master Degree s 5 (1) (a) The institute may decide on the fee to be charged from students for various components in the beginning of the academic year, after obtaining approval of the Board on the recommendation of the Senate. The fee may be fixed keeping in view the instructions issued by the Central Government in this regard. The same may be laid down in the regulation as framed under the (b) The fee for one or more components may be revised at any time during the academic year on the recommendation of the Standing Internal Advisory Committee Students Affairs and approved by the Board. The same may be laid down in the regulation as framed under (c) (d) The fee to be charged from students for residence in hostels may be approved by the Board on the recommendation of the center Local Academic Standards Committee and the Senate. The same may be laid down in the regulation framed under Ordinance 15 and notified from time to time in the specific admission brochure. All issues related to fees may be notified as and when required for the information of the students. Certificate s (4) (a) The fee for various Certificate programmes and revision of the same may be as laid out in the regulation as framed under Ordinance 15 and notified in the specific admission brochure (b) The fee to be charged from students for residence in hostels may be approved by the Board on the recommendation of the center Local Academic Standards Committee and the Senate. The same may be laid down in the regulation framed under Ordinance 15 and notified from time to time in the specific admission brochure. Bridge programmes (5) The fee for various bridge programmes and revision of the same may be as laid out in the regulation as framed under Ordinance 15 and notified in the specific admission brochure.

8 Registration Bachelor and Master Degree s 6 (1) (a) The date of initial registration of students for the Bachelor or Master Degree programmes may be the date on which the student formally registers for the first time in the first year after the admission process is completed. This date may be construed as the date of joining the programme for all intent and purposes. The same may be laid down in the regulation as framed under (b) The Senate may prescribe the normal maximum duration within which each must be completed by the student. The same may be laid down in the regulation as framed under (c) A student is required to attend every scheduled period of study. However, for late registration, sickness or other such exigencies, absence may be allowed as provided for in the regulations on Attendance as framed under (d) The procedures of registration and re-registration may be laid down in the regulations after approval of the Senate and notified in the Student Rule Book from time to time. Ph.D. Degree (2) The procedure of registration for PhD programme may be as laid down in the regulation as framed under Diploma s (3) The registration and re-registration procedure of various diploma programmes may be as laid down in the regulation as framed under Certificate s (4) The registration and re-registration procedure of various certificate programmes may be as laid down in the regulation as framed under Bridge s (5) The registration and re-registration procedure of various bridge programmes may be as laid down in the regulation as framed under

9 Academic Calendar 7 (1) (a) Dates for the important academic events scheduled during the Academic year may be specified in the Academic Calendar and notified for the information of Students, Faculty and others. The details may be as laid down in the regulation as framed under In particular, the dates for the following events may specified: be Bachelor and Master Degree s - Orientation, Registration - Payment of semester fee - Commencement of classes - All examinations (including Jury / Viva Voce) - Declaration of results - Internship,, Field visits etc - Vacations, mid-semester break. (b) The Academic Calendar, or any change therein during the session, may require prior approval of the Senate on the recommendation of Standing Internal Advisory Committee Academic Management System. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under the Ph.D. Degree (2) (a) Dates for the important academic events scheduled during the period of the programme may be specified in the Academic Calendar and notified for the information of Students, Faculty and others. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under (b) The Academic Calendar, or any change therein during the session, may require prior approval of the Senate on the recommendation of Standing Internal Advisory Committee Research. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under the Diploma s (3) The Academic Calendar for various diploma programmes may be as laid down in the regulations on diploma programmes as framed under Certificate s (4) The Academic Calendar for various Certificate programmes may be as laid down in the regulation on certificate programmes as framed under Bridge s (5) The Academic Calendar for various Bridge programmes may be as laid down in the regulation on certificate programmes as framed under Academic Input, Evaluation & conduct of Examination 8 (1) (a) An Undergraduate or a Postgraduate student may be required to earn a minimum number of credits each semester through various curricular components like lecture, practical, workshop, field studies, seminar, project etc. at the Institute or at such other Institutions as have been approved by the Institute. For such a student, the Dissertation, Project, Design Collection and other similar academic activities may be

10 Bachelor and Master Degree s undertaken under the supervision of a guide or Mentor from the institute. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under (b) (c) (d) A student may be permitted to carry out in full or part his Dissertation, Graduation/ Research Project, Design Collection and other similar academic activities outside the Institute Campus or outside the country, as per the regulations on course curriculum as laid down under In all such above cases (a) and (b), an additional Faculty or mentor, from outside organization or Institute or Industry, if considered necessary, may be engaged by the Centre Director on the recommendation of Local Academic Standards Committee. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under A student may be required to complete all academic requirements for the award of the degree within such period as may be approved by the Board and specified in the Regulations, including those credits earned under Twinning programme at such other institutions as have been recognized by NIFT for this purpose. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under (e) Students who fail to appear in any end term examination, due to bonafide reasons, may be permitted to appear in the Reexamination in addition to those who have failed in the subject at the end of the evaluation as per the procedures laid down in the regulations on Re- examination as framed under Ordinance 15 (f) The process & procedure of conduct of examination, duties of examining body, examiners & moderators, fulfillment of the requirements to appear for examination and all other such matters connected with the examinations may be approved by the Board on the recommendation of the Standing Internal Advisory Committee- Examination and Evaluation and the Senate as laid down in the regulations as framed under (g) The process of evaluation of the course, the award of grades and the Semester Grade Point Average / Cumulative Grade Point Average, the examination and all such matters connected with the functioning/ progress of a Bachelor and Master degree programme may be such as specified in the regulations framed under Ordinance 15 and approved by the Board. (h) In addition to the minimum academic requirements stipulated for Bachelor and Master Degree s, the departments may prescribe additional academic requirements to suit their s. Such additional requirements may require prior approval of the Senate and may be notified as part of the detailed curriculum of the programme.

11 Ph.D Degree programmes (2) (a) Each student will be required to take requisite course work to secure a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average and a comprehensive exam after the completion of the course work. (b )The research work will have to be undertaken under the supervision of a guide from the institute. (c) The details of the above (a & b) may be laid down in the regulations as framed under Ordinance15. Diploma s (3) The process and procedures of academic input, evaluation & conduct of examination and any other related matter for various Diploma programmes may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the Certificate s (4) The process and procedures of academic input, evaluation & conduct of examination and any other related matter for various Certificate programmes may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the Bridge s (5) The process and procedures of academic input, evaluation & conduct of examination and any other related matter for various bridge programmes may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the

12 Academic s Curriculum and Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates Bachelor and Master Degree s 9 (1) (a) The curriculum of each Degree, required for its successful completion, may require prior approval of the Senate. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under (b) Any change in the approved curriculum of any existing Degree will also require prior approval of the Senate. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the (c) The approved curriculum of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes may be in the custody of Dean- Academics, Chairperson of the Department and Centre Cordinator at each center. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under Ordinance15. (d) The award of the Bachelor and Master degree to an eligible candidate may be made in accordance with the procedures laid down in the regulations as framed under (e) Those students who were admitted in the Institute prior to coming force of this Ordinance and have successfully completed the programme after undertaking examinations in terms of this Ordinance and the regulations made there under shall be awarded the Bachelor and Master Degree as the case may be, in accordance with the regulations framed under (f) The Convocation of the institute may be held annually to confer degrees to eligible students as per procedures laid down in the regulation as framed under (g) The Board may approve the format of each Degree to be awarded to a student after successful completion of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate. The details may be laid down in the regulation as under the Any revision in the format of a Degree would require prior approval of the Board on the recommendation of the Senate.

13 Ph.D Degree (2) (a) The curriculum of each Degree, required for its successful completion, may require prior approval of the Senate. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under (b) Any change in the approved curriculum of the Doctoral will require prior approval of the Board on the recommendations of the Senate. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the (c) The approved curriculum of the doctoral programme may be in the custody of Head Research. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the Ordinance15 (d) The award of the Ph.D degree to an eligible candidate may be made in accordance with the procedures laid down in the regulations as framed under (e) The Convocation of the institute may be held annually to confer degrees to eligible students as per procedures laid down in the regulation as framed under (f) The Board may approve the format of each Degree to be awarded to a student after successful completion of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate. The details may be laid down in the regulations as under the Any revision in the format of a Degree would require prior approval of the Board on the recommendation of the Senate. Diploma Certificate (3) The curriculum, format for Diploma, award of Diploma and other issues related to such programmes may be as laid down in the regulation as framed under (4) The curriculum, format for Certificate, award of Certificate and other issues related to such programmes may be as laid down in the regulation as framed under the Bridge programmes (5) The curriculum, format for Bridge s, award of Degree and other issues related to such programmes may be as laid down in the regulation as framed under the

14 Students Financial Assistance, Awards, Medals and Developmental Activities Bachelor Master and Ph.D. Degree s 10 (1) (2) A Student of degree programmes may be granted such assistantship, or financial support and such awards/ prizes and medals as may be specified in the regulations in accordance with the instructions issued by the Government of India and the decision of the Board/ Senate from time to time. The details may be laid down in the regulation as framed under The institute may encourage students to participate in extra curricular activities to develop their overall personality and skills. The procedures and guidelines for participation in such developmental activities may be laid down in the regulations as framed under the International Twinning & Exchange 11 (1) (2) A student registered for degree programmes in the institute and / or a student registered for a programme in a recognized University or Institution abroad having MOU with the Institute, may be allowed to attend classes and workshop, if sponsored officially by the University or the Institution under Twinning and Exchange. However, the maximum period for which a student will be allowed to avail the facility, may not exceed one year. The selection processes for such programmes may be as per the guidelines laid down in the regulations and approved by the Senate, on the recommendation of Standing Internal Advisory Committee International & Domestic Linkages. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under Discipline & Conduct Rules 12 (1) (2) A student admitted to any of the academic programmes of the Institute has to abide by the Standing Orders laid down in Student Rule Book issued by the Institute from time to time. These orders may deal with the discipline of the students in the Campus, Departments, Hostels and outside. The orders may also deal with such other matters as considered necessary for the general conduct of the students, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. These orders may be approved by the Director General, on the recommendation of Standing Internal Advisory Committee Students Affairs. The details may be laid down in the regulations as framed under Faculty Development & Training 13 The procedures and process of Faculty Training and Development opportunities for academic purposes may be such as recommended by Standing Internal Advisory Committee Faculty Orientation, Training & Development and approved by Senate as may be laid down in the regulation framed under the Intellectual Rights Property 14 The procedure of implementation of Intellectual Property Rights Policy of the institute may be as laid down in the regulations and published and notified separately in the IPR Manual of NIFT. Framing of Regulations 15 Notwithstanding anything contained in the above ordinances, the following subject matters may be governed by the regulations framed and published in the Academic Manual and there subsequent amendments or additions or deletions as duly approved by the Board from time to time:

An approval by the Senate or the Board as the case may be relating to the said change, amendment, modification, insertion or deletion may operate from the date when the Chairperson of the Senate/Board as the case may be, had approved the same. Repeal and Saving 17 The National Institute of Fashion Technology Ordinances for Post Graduate Degree, Under Graduate Degree, Diploma and Certificate s Ordinances, 2007 is hereby repealed. Notwithstanding such repeal, anything done or any action taken or purported to have been taken under the said ordinances may be deemed to have been done or taken under the corresponding regulations of these Ordinances. Interpretation Regulations of 18 (1) Notwithstanding anything contained in the above Ordinances, no regulations may be made in contravention of the decision of the Senate, Academic Affairs committee, or the Board, in regard to the duration of the programmes, and the number of students and the procedure thereof.
