3 Higher education at CNWL The College of North West London has successfully delivered Higher Education qualifications for many years, working with respected universities and thousands of students over this time. With employers expecting career-focused qualifications, and the increasing costs of studying at university, more students are choosing to take Higher Education courses with us. Our range of Higher Education courses is based in subjects where the College has specialist expertise and facilities. 4 Why take a Higher Education course with us? Get a Higher Education qualification in one year Our HNCs and HNDs provision allows you to work towards a degree while gaining a qualification on the way. Each year of study ends in a recognised qualification. Usually, you complete an HNC in the first year, HND in the second year and then you can progress onto the second or final year of a degree with a university. Affordable Higher Education (HE) courses at CNWL are competitively priced and if you are from the UK or EU you will be able to obtain a loan for course fees and living costs through Student Finance England (see uk/student-finance). Tuition fees for full-year courses start from around 3,500 per year - less than half the price of most university courses. Flexible modes of study CNWL offers you flexible access to HE, studying at a level that reflects your previous qualifications and experience. As our HE courses are mostly taught in one - three sessions per week, you can fit your studies around your work and life commitments. Depending on the level you start at, you can study with us for one-three years and at the end of each year progress to further study or enjoy improved career prospects with your new qualification Progression Our HE courses are designed to make Higher Learning accessible to students who have taken a vocational route through learning as well as those with a traditional A Level background. Many of our students have progressed through the levels in the College to end up on their HE course. 04

5 Facilities HE courses at CNWL have the all the facilities and resources available for you to succeed in your course. As well as specialist facilities for each subject, our Learning Resource Centre at the Willesden Centre has a dedicated HE study room. CNWL has recently invested several million pounds in redeveloping its campuses, and continues to do so. The redevelopment of one of our buildings at Willesden will see the creation of additional HE facilities. High quality teaching and learning We pride ourselves on a high standard of teaching and learning and courses are planned to prepare you for a successful career. All our HE courses are taught in areas of strength for the College, in purpose-designed facilities using industrystandard equipment. Our HE students have access to an online technical library that provides current, relevant reading for the construction industry. HE students can use this to download books and journals to support their learning and assessments. Our teaching staff have a variety of professional experience and are dedicated to making sure that your learning is relevant, rewarding and enjoyable. We regularly involve guests from industry in planning and delivering sessions. Student Services Our HE students have full access to the support services offered at CNWL including careers and financial advice and guidance. There is also an extensive programme of sports, leisure and enrichment activities. We also offer extensive support to those with additional learning needs. For more details please see the Support pages on our web site Partner University The College has an articulation agreement with Middlesex University that guarantees progression from the Computing HND and Foundation Degree (see page 14 & 15) to certain final year degree programmes, subject to your final grade. 6 Financial Support for Higher Education Courses Different higher-level courses have different funding support available. Below is a summary. For up-to-date information and links to helpful government advice see the Higher Education section on our web site at courses AAT Level 4 - you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan. For information on the Loan please visit can apply for a Loan by calling or hardshipfund@cnwl.ac.uk to obtain a Learning and Funding Letter. HNC, HND and Foundation Degrees unless you are able to pay your course fees yourself, you should apply for a loan through Student Finance England: see - all information regarding rules and repayment is on this site. See course pages for further details. This loan may cover both your course fees and maintenance (money to support yourself while you study). CELTA no funding support available from College or Government. You must pay your own fees or make private arrangements An instalment plan may be available. Higher Apprenticeships no funding support is available. However, employers will normally pay the fees attached to Apprenticeship training. Employers may receive direct funding support from Government. See page

7 How to Apply Applications for places on Higher Education courses at CNWL should be made direct to the College. It can take time to sort out your course fee loan from Student Finance England. We therefore suggest you take the following steps when applying: First, apply to Student Finance England ( for your fees loan, if you will need it You do not need to wait to hear from them. In the mean time, apply to the College for your place on the course. We will then organise your interview/assessment if necessary. If you are successful in getting your place at College, we can then work with you to help sort out your finance. Entry Qualifications When applying for a Higher Education course, you may be invited for an interview/assessment (depending on your previous qualifications). This is to ensure that you have a suitable level of English and Maths to succeed in your course. 8 AAT Accounting Level 4 MODE(S) OF STUDY: Evening (Tuesday and Thursday 6-9 p.m.) START DATE: 08 September 2015 DURATION: 36 weeks Course content This course covers higher level accounting tasks, including drafting financial statements, managing budgets and evaluating financial performance. You ll also have the opportunity to specialise in areas from tax to auditing and credit control. Entry criteria This course is suitable if you ve already completed AAT Level 3 or are at an advanced stage in your career and want a qualification to accredit your skills and improve your future career prospects. Future opportunities This qualification, together with evidence of one year s relevant work experience, enables you to apply to become a full member of AAT and use the letters MAAT after your name. 9 Building Services Engineering (Mechanical/ Electrical Services) HNC / HND MODE(S) OF STUDY: Part Time (Tue, 9.00am pm, or 2 evenings per week 6pm-9pm) START DATE: 05 September 2016 DURATION: 36 weeks per year for 2 years Course content This programme has been designed to give a substantial grounding in the technician engineering field of Building Services Engineering. It is aimed at those who wish to follow a career in design, planning, specification purchase, installation, or maintenance of building services and related equipment. Modules provide a mix of taught and workbased units, to reflect and enhance workplace employability and career progression. The teaching team has strong links with employers, with regular input from industry on content and delivery of the course. You will study four core and four specialist units. The core units are Design Principles and Application Management, Health and Safety and Welfare Services, Application of Scientific Principles and Group Project. Specialist units are selected from a combination of some of the following subjects to provide exposure to a range of aspects of building services. These units include Thermo-Fluid and Acoustics, Air Conditioning, Heating, Applied Mathematics, Lighting Application, Electrical Installation. Students also learn how to use Electrical Design Packages Hevacomp and Dialux. Both are provided free in the College. Where relevant your choice of options can be made in consultation with your employers workplace training needs. Entry criteria This course is for those who have recently finished a Level 3 qualification in Construction, Engineering or Electrical Services, or those who have experience in a related job role. Future opportunities The course enables you to continue to Higher National Diploma (HND) studies at Level 5, as this course is the equivalent to the first year of a degree programme. Career options include working in a Construction / Building Services Engineering Management role. Holding an HNC/D will also allow students to apply for the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Academically Qualified Person card. This qualification will also allow access to associate level membership of professional institutions such as the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers. 10 Business Management HND MODE(S) OF STUDY: Full time START DATE: 12 September 2016 DURATION: 36 weeks per year over 2 years Course content This course is designed to give you a better understanding of theories and practical strategies for improving business performance. You will be taught in fully equipped classrooms using a wide range of teaching tools and techniques. You will have access to a wide range of learning materials through the Student Intranet Moodle. Practical sessions will be carried out in relevant workshops or studios, where applicable. The course also includes a suitable work placement. First Year Core Units: Business Environment, Managing Financial Resources and Decisions, Organisations and Behaviour and Marketing Principles (and four specialist units) Second Year Core Units: Aspects of Contract and Negligence for Business, Business Decision making, Business Strategy and Research Project (and four specialist units). Entry criteria The course is ideal for those with experience of working in a management environment, or students progressing from Level 3 qualifications including a business element (e.g. BTEC Business, or A Levels including business studies). You will need English and Maths skills at Level 2. If you do not have evidence of your English and Maths levels you will be given an online English and Maths assessment after you submit your application. You may also be asked to complete a piece of free writing or a vocational assessment. If you meet the entry requirements you will then be offered an interview with a tutor to discuss the course. Future opportunities On completion of studying the HND Business Management course, you can seek to a transfer onto the third year of University provided it is of a similar subject and you have a good academic history. You may have to start from the first year, if your chosen degree differs from your HND. The course is designed to help students develop their personal and professional skills in preparation for what employers are looking for in employability. Typical professions for students who study Business Management enter the working world of Banking, Customer Relations, HR, Finance, Marketing, Sales, Retail and Management Consultancy. 11 Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language CELTA MODE(S) OF STUDY: 4.5 hours per week (Tuesdays ) over 27 weeks START DATE: November 2016 DURATION: Varies see above Course content CELTA is an Internationally recognised qualification (at Level 5) for those with little or no previous teaching experience and opens up a whole world of teaching opportunities (in schools, adult, community and further education settings, or as a trainer for businesses or public services). CELTA is the ideal qualification if you wish to travel and work around the world to teach English as a foreign language. This course at the College of North West London will give you the training, confidence and recognition you need to become successful in your teaching career, both in the UK and abroad. Entry criteria A high level of literacy and language awareness is required to succeed on this course. Applicants are selected for a place on the course based on the standard of their application and an interview with the course tutor. 12 Louie student profile Along with other members of the Higher National Diploma class, Louie Dinev gave a presentation and Q&A session at an international conference for professionals in the Learning Technology industry called Teach Meets Tech. Conference organiser Martin King of InspireNShare said: The students were the highlight of the day. It is so unusual for those talking about education to include students in the conversations and conferences and the students presented at the same level as the best I have seen. Louie Dinev Computing and Systems Development My course gives me the chance to learn about the things I love, like programming and web design. We had this opportunity to give a presentation at Teach Meets Tech it has given us loads of great contacts and we had the chance to say what we feel could be improved in learning technology. I d like to run my own company some time in the future and this has sparked off an interest in education and given me ideas of my own! 12

13 Computing and Systems Development HNC MODE(S) OF STUDY: Part Time, one full day per week START DATE: September 2016 and January 2017 DURATION: 35 weeks per year for 2 years Course content The course equips learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and further study in the computing industry. You will cover various areas of IT including networking, software and web technologies and e-commerce, as well as working on advanced programming and systems design concepts. This course is assessed entirely by coursework and also includes a suitable work placement. First Year Modules: Website Design, Procedural Programming (C++/Java), Computer Systems, Database Design Concepts (Access/Oracle), Knowledge-based Systems. Second Year Modules: Quality Systems in IT, Systems Analysis & Design (Using SELECT CASE Tool), Business Skills for E-commerce, Employability & Professional Development. Entry criteria This course is designed for those who have recently finished a Level 3 qualification in Computing or who have experience in a computing or systems role. You will also need a suitable level of Maths and English, assessed at interview or from existing qualifications. Future opportunities Learners who achieve their BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate can progress to a BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma (below) which offers a greater degree of specialisation, and then potentially to degree level. Successful completion of the course will also enhance career prospects. 14 Computing and Systems Development HND MODE(S) OF STUDY: Full Time (3-4 days per week) START DATE: September 2016 and January 2017 DURATION: Course content The course will provide specialised and transferable knowledge and skills as a basis for future studies and career progression in computing and systems development. You will cover modules developing technical knowledge and business skills, such as e-commerce, system analysis, object oriented programming, network technologies and IT security management. First Year Modules: Website Design, Procedural Programming (C++/Java), Computer Systems, Database Design Concepts (Access/Oracle), Networking Technology, Business Skills for E-Commerce, E-Commerce Technology, Knowledge-based Systems, Employability & Professional Development. Second Year Modules: Data Analysis & Design (PHP / SQL and Oracle), Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation, Quality Systems in IT, Systems Analysis & Design (Using SELECT CASE Tool), Work Based Experience, Web Application Development, Networking Infrastructure, Programming in.net, Digital Forensics. This course is entirely assessed by coursework and also includes a suitable work placement. Entry criteria This course is designed for those who have recently finished a Level 3 qualification in Computing or who have experience in a computing or systems role. You will also need a suitable level of Maths and English, assessed at interview or from existing qualifications. 36 weeks Future opportunities This course can lead to progression to the second or third year of an honours degree in computing, or access to further professional qualifications offered by Cisco, Microsoft, or CompTIA, for example. Students who successfully complete an HND with us can progress to most universities for the second or final year of relevant degree programmes. After fully completing this degree, you will be able to follow a variety of careers in the IT industry, including System Analysis, System Information Technology and Design, Networking and System Management, E-Commerce Management and Technical Support. Alternatively you can opt for career in research through post-graduate studies. 15 Foundation Degree in Computing (Software Engineering) MODE(S) OF STUDY: September start F/T(2 years, 3 days per week) and P/T(3 years 1 day a week) February start F/T only (2 years, 3 days per week) START DATE: September 2016 and February 2017 DURATION: Course content This course can be completed in two years (in college three days a week) or three years (in college one day a week). This course offers practical skills and technical understanding in the design and development of computer-based systems. Modules include Programming (Java), Introduction to Computer Systems, Database Management Systems, Work Based Learning, Object Oriented Analysis and Design, Object oriented Software Development, Project Development and Software Development Project. A work placement is an essential part of the course. Students are assessed on exams as well as coursework. Entry criteria The course is suitable for those who have recently finished a Level 3 qualification in Computing or who have experience in a computing or software engineering role. You will also need a suitable level of Maths and English, assessed at interview or from existing qualifications. 35 weeks per year for 2-3 years Future opportunities On finishing the course students can continue at Middlesex University to complete a full degree. You will need to achieve total of 240 credits to successfully complete the course and to progress to Level 6, the final year BSc Honours Degree in Computer Science, Business Information Systems or Information Technology and Networking. 16 Kirsty student profile In an industry with few female role models, with personal motivation and hard work Kirsty is achieving success at CNWL and in her career. Her experience is a wonderful example of the progress that can be made by students who can thrive in a job when coupled with learning at College. She was the winner of the Higher Education Student Award 2015 in Construction and Engineering. Kirsty Keohane Construction An HNC Construction student, Kirsty has been on an impressive journey in col lege and her career. Kirsty initially started work in an admin role as a temp with a construction company 5 years ago. With no existing technical qualifications, Kirsty joined the BTEC L3 construction conversion course at CNWL, which she completed with a Distinction and progressed to the HNC. She has continued to produce outstanding assignment work reflecting her growing responsibilities at work. 16

17 Construction & the Built Environment HNC MODE(S) OF STUDY: Part Time (Tue, 9.00am pm) START DATE: 5 September 2016 DURATION: Course content This course has three pathways, in Civil Engineering (Bridges, roads, surveying); Construction Engineering (Design, construction and maintenance of Buildings) and Building Services Engineering (Design and Design, construction and maintenance of mechanical and electrical services in a building i.e. Electrical power, Heating and Cooling Systems, Lighting). Students will gain a high level of understanding of the design, function, construction and statutory requirements for leisure, residential or commercial buildings. It aims to prepare you for advanced employment opportunities in the construction industry for those with ambitions of working within a professional, managerial or technical capacity. Modules provide a mix of taught and workbased units, to reflect and enhance workplace employability and career progression. The teaching team has strong links with employers, with regular input from industry on content and delivery of the course. Depending on which pathway you take, the course covers skills such as: Civil Engineering (Roads, Bridges, Surveying) Construction Engineering (Building Construction and Maintenance); Building Services Engineering (Services in a building such as Electrical power supply, Heating, Cooling, Lighting); Design and Management Principles/Application; Science of Construction; Materials; and Site Surveying Procedures. Students also learn how to use Electrical Design Packages Hevacomp and Dialux. Both are provided free in the College. Where relevant your choice of options can be made in consultation with your employers workplace training needs. 36 weeks per year over 2 years Entry criteria This course is for those who have recently finished a Level 3 qualification in Construction or who have experience in a related job role. Examples of suitable entry qualifications are: a BTEC National Certificate (PM grade or higher), BTEC National Diploma (PPM grade or higher) in Construction, a pass in two AS or A Levels in a science and maths related subject, or other similar qualifications. You will also need a suitable level of Maths and English, assessed at interview or from existing qualifications. Future opportunities In the sector, a range of career opportunities exist including work as planners, site managers, advisors or administrative and technical roles within construction companies. The course also enables you to continue to Higher National Diploma (HND) studies at Level 5, or entry to the first year of an Honours Degree programme (dependent of you final grade classification). Holding an HNC/D will also allow students to apply for the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Academically Qualified Person card. This qualification will also allow access to associate level membership of professional institutions such as the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers. 18 Construction & the Built Environment HND MODE(S) OF STUDY: Full Time (Tues 9am to 7.30pm and 9am to 2pm or 12noon to 5pm Weds and Fri) START DATE: 5 September 2016 DURATION: 36 weeks per year over 2 years Course content This course builds on the skills learned in the HNC above. Those with substantial experience in a relevant role in the sector may enter this level directly. This course is equivalent to the first or second year of a Degree (Hons) programme (dependent on the grades obtained and the degree/institution applied for). Modules provide a mix of taught and workbased units, to reflect and enhance workplace employability and career progression. The teaching team has strong links with employers, with regular input from industry on content and delivery of the course. During the HND students develop their management techniques and also study specialisms such as Measuring, Tendering and Estimating for Construction and the Environmental Impact of Construction. Students also learn how to use Electrical Design Packages Hevacomp and Dialux. Both are provided free in the College. Where relevant your choice of options can be made in consultation with your employers workplace training needs. Entry criteria Two A or AS Levels grade E or above. Future opportunities On completing this course students may progress to university to complete the final year or two years of a degree programme. The course also enhances career opportunities within the management sector of Building Services Engineering. Holding an HNC/D will also allow students to apply for the CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Academically Qualified Person card. 19 Higher Apprenticeships CNWL is one of very few College in the UK offering Higher Apprenticeships alongside HE Diplomas and Certificates. It is also one of the largest providers of apprenticeship training in London, with around 1000 apprentices from employers of all sizes completing their workbased learning with us. We are now offering Higher Apprenticeships, which are a work-based alternative to traditional Higher Education. Work-based qualifications can also have real value to employers and individuals as an enhancement to academic qualifications. We are unique in London in our range of Higher Apprenticeship provision, providing training in a wide variety of subject areas. Employers if you have staff who would benefit from becoming a Higher Apprentice, or would like information on the availability of grants to offset fees, please contact us on Potential Apprentices if you are qualified at Level 3 or above and employed in the sector you wish to be an apprentice in, please talk to your employer about whether they would support you on a Higher Apprenticeship. If you are not employed in the sector at the moment you cannot do an apprenticeship, so why not consider one of our college-based courses? Students who are successful on our courses frequently gain employment leading to apprenticeships in their sector. Under the Higher Level Apprenticeships HLA, you will gain two qualifications; a Level 4/5 NVQ plus a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) at the same time. NVQ work-based learning assessments are carried out in your workplace in parallel with your college-based learning. Both NVQs and Higher Nationals are nationally-recognised qualifications, individually providing a certified level of work-based learning and academic achievement. Higher Education Guide 2016/17 19
