3 Naviance Naviance is a web-based college and career planning program for students and families. Some features include: performing a college search and managing college list access to college profiles and web sites comparison of GPA and standardized test scores to actual historical data for Staples students Do What You Are, Career Interest Profiler, Resume Builder, and other career developmental tools college representative visit schedule scholarship database used to send school materials to colleges senior year (transcript, recommendations, etc.)
4 Career Interest Profiler/Resume Builder In mid- to late-april, school counselors will deliver a lesson to sophomores in U.S. History classes. Each student will complete Naviance Career Interest Profiler and start a resume using Resume Builder. Career Interest Profiler analyzes a student s interests and pairs results with potential careers. Resume Builder is a tool used to keep track of academic information and co-curricular activities throughout high school.

9 Post-High School Options Apprenticeship Training Programs Community Colleges/Two-Year Colleges Employment Four-Year Colleges & Universities Gap Year Military Post-Graduate Year Technical/Vocational Schools Staples school counselors are prepared to support students interested in pursuing any of the above pathways.
10 Staples Statistics 91% of students from the Class of 2017 were accepted to at least one of their top three college choices. The top five colleges attended in the past five years: UConn, U of Michigan, NCC, Syracuse, and Tulane Staples graduates go on to attend approximately 170 different colleges every year (337 total different colleges in the past five years). The majority of Staples students go on to attend a four-year college; however, every year we have excited and successful students who pursue two-year colleges, employment, the military, a PG year, gap year, and other meaningful paths after high school.
11 SHS Transcript Both GPAs are listed Includes final grades and credit in all courses Updated and available online at the end of each semester Academic GPA is weighted and includes: English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Language Overall GPA is not weighted and includes all courses GPAs on transcript are cumulative
12 SHS Report Card Report Cards reflect a quarterly overall GPA that is NOT cumulative.
13 PSAT in Grade 11 PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) Administered nationwide by the College Board in October Two scores: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Mathematics Not used in the college admission process Register through the Guidance Office in September
14 College Admission Testing Most colleges require either an SAT or ACT. All juniors are required to take state administered SAT in the spring during the school day. SAT and/or ACT are generally taken in the spring of junior year/fall of senior year. Most students take 2-3 times. Many colleges are SAT/ACT optional (see Register with full name at birth.
15 SAT vs. ACT Understanding the differences between the tests Determining which test is a better fit for your child Thinking about an appropriate timeline for your child College Admission Testing presentation by a local test prep agency on April 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Staples Auditorium.
16 SAT Subject Tests One hour content-based tests Required/recommended at a small number of colleges Always verify requirements with college websites Sophomores enrolled in certain Honors/AP courses may consider these tests after consulting with counselor and teacher. Registration through College Board website
17 SAT Subject Tests SUBJECT TEST STAPLES CLASS NOTES Math Level 1 Algebra 2 Honors If taking Pre-Calc Honors and a very strong student, colleges will expect Math Level 2. Math Level 2 Pre-Calc Honors Should be taken at end of Pre-Calc H when material is most fresh. Exam does NOT have Calculus on it. Biology (MB or Molecular) Biology Honors/ AP Biology Better success if able to wait until after AP Biology. Chemistry Chemistry Honors/ Better success if able to wait until after AP Chemistry. AP Chemistry Physics Physics Honors United States History AP US History World History AP World History Literature AP English Language/Lit Please consult with teacher about additional review. Does not help to wait for AP Physics. Completion of course Completion of course The reading passages are difficult. Must be good with reading comprehension. French, Spanish, German, Modern Hebrew, Latin, Language subject tests are frequently taken by native speakers so Italian or *Chinese, World Languages student must be excellent in language. Possibility of taking subject *Japanese, *Korean test upon completion of AP level. (*only offered in November)

23 The Cost of College Begin with honest conversation about finances now Make cost one of college search criteria Consider 4 year cost of a degree Use Net Price Calculator to determine likelihood of receiving financial aid Most scholarship/gift aid is funded by colleges themselves Merit aid is another possible source of funding Students are most likely to receive merit aid at colleges where they are in in top 25% of applicants If the fees for submitting college applications, taking standardized tests, or sending test scores presents a true financial hardship for your family, please have your child see his/her school counselor.
