1 WRIGHT SCHOLAR RESEARCH ASSISTANT PROGRAM
2 What is a Wright Scholar? Someone who: Has an avid interest in science and engineering Is considering a STEM career path Is a high school junior or senior and wants the opportunity to work with world-class researchers in science and engineering fields Gets paid for the experience 2
3 Application Criteria Must be high school junior or senior at time of application Must be 16 years of age by program start Wright Scholar Class of 2011 Must be a U.S. citizen Must have 3.5 overall GPA Must have an interest in science or engineering as a potential career field 3
4 Wright Scholar Statistics Most students come from the following local Ohio counties: Butler (Middletown, Oxford) Champaign (Urbana) Clark (New Carlisle, Springfield) Greene (Beavercreek, Bellbrook, Cedarville, Fairborn, Greeneview, Xenia) Miami (Covington, Miami East, Milton Union, Tipp City) Montgomery (Alter, Carroll, Centerville, Chaminade- Julienne, Dayton Christian, Dixie, Huber Heights, Kettering, Miamisburg, New Lebanon, Northmont, Oakwood, Riverside, West Carrollton) Warren (Carlisle, Franklin, Mason, Springboro) Some come from as far away as Auglaize, Shelby, Franklin, Delaware, & Lucas counties As well as out-of-state representation from Oregon, Indiana, & Michigan!! 4
5 Unique Ranking & Selection Process Applications will be scored and ranked by a selection panel using a blind review system Names and other personal data will be removed from applications prior to review Awarded an overall score (70-100) based on the following criteria: Overall GPA Difficulty of academic curriculum Extracurricular activities Demonstrated leadership Strong capabilities in science & math Specific interest in engineering & science Essay 5

Matched with a scientist or engineer mentor to work on a research project for the duration of the summer Participates in summer engineering enrichment program workshops & lectures at the University of Dayton Attends tours and hands-on workshops at Wright State University and The Ohio State University Attends weekly lecture series featuring prominent scientists, engineers, and industry leaders Attends AFIT propulsion course Tours various AFRL facilities and the AF museum Gains knowledge of employment opportunities in science and engineering fields 6
