There are two types of Summer Assistants that we will be hiring: Summer Resident Assistants and Summer Office Assistants. 2 Welcome Residential Life & Housing is glad you re interested in being a part of our staff for the summer time. Our office is a supportive and welcoming environment for both our students and staff. We hope that you ll be able to be a part of our team for the summer and have fun while doing it! Our Summer Assistants (SA) play a crucial role in our department during the summer. We have a large number of students that are living on campus, whether it be they are taking classes, working an internship, or have come to call Barnard their permanent home. Our Student Assistants play an important role in providing a healthy, enjoyable living environment for our summer residents. Below are brief explanations of the RA & Office Assistant positions. Resident Assistant The Resident Assistant position is focused on the administrative tasks of summer housing, however, you ll have plenty of interaction with the residents that live on your floor. In this position, you will be responsible for handling the Room Condition Reports for the students living on campus (including inspecting rooms before/after a student moves in), communicating information with your residents throughout the summer (via posters, s and bulletin boards) as well as serve on a duty rotation in which you are present in the building to ensure the safety of the residents and respond to troubles that arise after hours. This is a great position for somebody who wants to work a daytime job/internship and is available in the early evening and weekends. However, it s important to know that there will be weekday daytime commitments with this position. For a full understanding of the position, please review the enclosed job description. Office Assistant The Office Assistant position is ever changing and offers the opportunity to have a lot of different experiences during the summer time. The responsibilities range from filing paperwork (such as Housing applications), serving as a receptionist in the office to students/parents, answering phones, creating documents on a computer, to purchasing a 1,000 baloons and transporting them to campus for an upcoming event! This is a great position for somebody who wants to work 20 hours/week over 4 or 5 days, and then have their evenings and weekends free. Past Office Assistants have balanced the job with taking a summer course and/or working a part-time job in the evening/weekends. 3 Selection Timeline 3/4 Applications Available Stop by Residential Life & Housing (110 Sulzberger) to pick up an application or download it at 9:30pm Info Session Come learn more about working for Residential Life & Housing for the summer! Our staff will be at these sessions to answer questions and to give an overiview of the summer positions available. The location will be Weber Lounge (Reid 119). 3/22 Applications Due Applications must be submitted by 4pm to Residential Life & Housing (110 Sulzberger). 3/24-4/5 Interviews We will be unable to offer all applicants an interview. The Candidates that are offered interviews will be contacted with their interview date/time. 4/11 Offers Made Offer letters will be ed to candidates on this date. Summer Assistant

4 Summer OA GENERAL DESCRIPTION Reporting to an Associate Director, the Summer Office Assistant is an essential member of Residential Life & Housing. She will work with all members of the department, including but not limited to the Associate Directors, Administrative Staff, and other Summer Assistants. The Office Assistant will work on various projects and responsibilities throughout the summer; therefore, the ability to take initiative and be responsible is of the utmost importance. With this position, there will be a focus on providing quality service to our students, conference guests, and other College personnel. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with both long and short term projects and responsibilities. These will change on a daily/weekly basis and some time periods will be much busier than others. Staff should be prepared to come in each day and do as much as they can while they are at work. Complete administrative responsibilities including but not limited to filing, typing, data entry and answering telephones. Provide quality service to individuals who come to Residential Life & Housing seeking assistance. Must be able to answer the phone professionally and take messages as need be. Complete errands and tasks, including walking to various residence halls and/or businesses in the neighborhood. Assist with closing and opening the residence halls. This includes preparing key packets, processing checkout envelopes, and completing Room Condition Reports. Assist with the check-in and check-out of summer residents. Develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships with fellow Summer Assistants and Residential Life and Housing Staff. Attend all staff meetings called by your supervisor. Fulfill additional duties as assigned. DATES OF EMPLOYMENT AND TIME COMMITMENT 5/4 - Training Session (12-3pm) 5/13 Assist with Closing (3 hours to be scheduled) 5/16-9/2 - Work 20 hours per week (typically between 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday) During peak periods of check-in and check-out, all Office Assistants will be required to work a few of their 20 hours between 5-8pm (Monday-Friday). These will be communicated with staff as far in advance as possible. Hours will vary depending on the specific needs of the week. The above should be considered a guideline, but not all-inclusive. The Office Assistant is expected to work 20 hours per week. COMPENSATION Summer Office Assistants will receive housing at no cost for the duration of the summer. During the transition/interim periods in May & August, staff will be prioritized to be placed in a single, however, depending on the availability they may be placed into doubles. During Summer Session I & Summer Session II (5/22-8/12), staff will be prioritized to be placed into single rooms. Any staff member not living in campus housing for the 2011 Fall Semester (i.e. graduated, studying abroad in the Fall, living off campus in the Fall, etc.) will be provided with Housing ONLY through August 12, FULL TIME POSITION The majority of the Office Assistants will be part-time positions (20 hours/week). We will be hiring 2 Office Assistants to work fulltime (35 hours/week). Please note on your application if you are interested in the part-time, full-time or both. The compensation for these positions will be the following: 20 hours in exchange for housing + 15 hours at an hourly rate = 35 hours/week

5 Summer RA GENERAL DESCRIPTION Reporting to an Associate Director, the Summer Resident Assistant is an essential member of Residential Life & Housing. She will assume the primary responsibility for responding to the needs of summer residents and conference guests. The primary responsibilities of the Summer RA includes but is not limited to participating in a duty rotation, administrative tasks and developing positive relationships with residents and guests. Summer is a very busy time; therefore, the RA position is one that requires flexibility, adaptability, enthusiasm and commitment. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES Serve on a duty rotation and on-call responsibilities punctually and reliably. You will be expected to be in your room while on duty and will need to complete rounds of all the floors in the building. Duty hours for the summer are 8pm-9am on weekdays (Mondays-Friday) and 24 hour duty (Saturday 9am-9pm, Sunday 9am-9pm) on weekends and holidays (Memorial Day & July 4th). During the 24-hour weekend and holiday duty, you will be able to be out of your building within a 10 block radius with the duty cell phone from 9am-8pm. If you are called on the phone during this time, you must report back to your building and deal with the situation immediately. You must be back in your building for the evening at 8pm. During peak check-in periods, RAs will be expected to assist with the process during duty. This will include, but is not limited to, conducting lobby hours to hand out keys and/or being called to give a student their key after hours. Assist in the check-in and check-out of summer residents. You will be expected to complete all paperwork and tasks associate with this process, including completing Room Condition Reports and communicating with the Associate Director when people move in/out. During peak periods, RAs will need to be available during daytime hours. These will be communicated as far in advance as possible. Attend all staff meetings called by your supervisor. These include, but are not limited to, weekly all staff meetings and/or 1:1 meetings. Maintain consistent and effective contact with your supervisor and keep her/him informed. Develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships with residents and any conference guests. Enforce College policies and document any incidents in writing within 24 hours of the incident occurring. Disseminate information to students through flyers, bulletin boards and floor meetings in a timely manner. Fulfill additional duties as assigned. DATES OF EMPLOYMENT AND TIME COMMITMENT 5/4 - Training Session (12-3pm) 5/20 - Building Prep Meeting (9am-6pm) 5/20 8/26 - Duty responsibilities (dates to be scheduled, approximately 1 weekday and 1 weekend per month) 8/13 8/15 - Closing Meeting & Responsibilities (9am-6pm, tentative) 8/29 9/2 Assist with preparing for Opening, between 9-6pm (5 hours to scheduled) There will be a 1 hour weekly staff meeting and/or 1/2 hour 1:1 meeting to be scheduled with your supervisor. During peak periods of check-in and check-out, the RA will need to be available during some daytime hours. These will be communicated with staff as far in advance as possible. Hours will vary depending on the specific needs of the week. The above should be considered a guideline, but not all-inclusive. The RA is expected to work 20 hours per week.
