3 LANGUAGE Functional multilingual Language Policy The NWU has a functional and multilingual language policy. This policy was implemented to ensure that no student will be denied access to the NWU because of language. The NWU is a pioneer in the field of educational interpreting in its various programmes. This ensures inclusivity and interculturality. Each campus applies this multilingual language policy according to its own student profile. Primary language of tuition on each campus The primary language of tuition is determined on demographic grounds (e.g.: the preference of the majority of students in a module is taken into consideration), didactic grounds (e.g.: the occupational prerequisites of certain qualification programmes choose e.g. English/Afrikaans or Setswana/Sesotho, irrespective of demography), and pragmatic grounds (e.g. the language capacity of the lecturer, or financial factors). Mafikeng Campus: English only Potchefstroom Campus: Undergraduate: Interpreting from Afrikaans to English and from English to Afrikaans, and in some modules where there are more than two class groups because of large numbers, separate English and Afrikaans classes presented in parallel. Postgraduate: English or Afrikaans, with interpreting in some programmes. Vaal Triangle Campus: First year parallel medium, from second year English only. A few modules are interpreted from English to Afrikaans. Four subjects come from the designated subject list of subjects for university admission. Application fees and residence deposit. The application form for provisional admission to the University must be accompanied by proof of payment of the prescribed R150 application fee. Newcomer Academic Merit Bursaries The bursaries are automatically awarded to all full-time first-year students who: Scored an average of 75 percent or higher during the Grade 12 final examination. The bursary is awarded on the basis of the arithmetic average of the percentages of the student s six best subjects, Life Orientation excluded. However, the percentage obtained in non-appointed subjects is reduced by ten percent in the calculation of merit bursaries. Student s average calculated % 85% - 100% 100% abatement- class fees 80% - 84% 75% abatement- class fees 75% - 79% 25% abatement- class fees NSFAS For more information visit ODL Open Distance Learning - an alternative choice Open distance learning refers to a mode of delivery and a teaching and learning approach that focuses on increasing access to education and training by eliminating possible obstacles such as time, place and tempo of learning. Students can register at any time, but there is a prescribed minimum and maximum time to complete the qualification with a specific number of assessment opportunities during this time.
