5 What can I study? AAT PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA IN Accounting Accredited through the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) this 15 month part time programme explores specialist areas of accounting such as taxation and external auditing and looks at detailed financial and costing statements produced by accountants. Course units include: Management Accounting Financial Statements for Limited Companies Accounting Systems and Controls Cash and Treasury Management Credit Management Personal Tax External Auditing Students will learn through a variety of methods including lectures, project work, seminars and e learning tutorials. This course is continually assessed with each unit being assessed individually. Students would normally require an Advanced Diploma in Accounting or equivalent as a minimum entry requirement. Chartered Accountants professional study programme or higher education. To study further in taxation you can also progress onto the Association of Taxation Technicians programme. HNC Business This part time course provides a specialist work-related programme of study that equips you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required in the business sector. Placing academic theory and learning within a practical vocational context, you will be encouraged to broaden your personal understanding of business and develop valuable transferable skills to really enhance your career prospects. This course consists of a variety of core units and additional specialist units such as: Business and the business environment Marketing Human Resource Management Management Operations Management Accounting Managing a successful business project Students will learn through a variety of lectures, group exercises, practical work, seminars and undertake directed and selfstudy. This course is continuously assessed using coursework. You can apply to the second year of University or enter employment within a business or management role, or if you are already employed, advance your ability to progress to more senior roles. Online Learning Carlisle College has teamed up with Newcastle College Business Academy to offer dedicated online learning provision, whereby students can study a range of higher level qualifications in the subject areas of Marketing and Law. Delivered online with flexible start dates, these courses can be studied in the comfort of your own home or workplace and include fully qualified online tutor support, professional learning materials, a detailed study guide, and an online electronic library. What s more, learning this way means you have the flexibility to access your course 24/7 for the duration of your studies. Chartered Institute of Marketing The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) is the world's largest organisation for professional marketers with a global reputation as a centre of excellence and whose qualifications are recognised worldwide. The CIM develop their standards based on detailed research and continual feedback from employers, so they re closely matched to the skills and knowledge required within the market. The following higher level CIM courses are delivered via supported online learning: CIM Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing CIM Level 4 Awards in either; Digital Marketing, Marketing, Integrated Communications or Customer Experience CIM Level 6 Diploma in Professional Marketing Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) is the professional association and governing body for Chartered Legal Executive lawyers, other legal practitioners and paralegals. CILEx offers a unique route to a legal career and becoming a qualified lawyer without a requirement to having a law degree, although law graduates and graduates with non-law degrees can also qualify as a lawyer through the CILEx route. 6 Foundation Degree Computing (full time/part time) This course is designed to equip students with the relevant skills to help combat the digital skills shortage. As well as preparing students to independently think and analyse systems, the course also prepares students with the practical application to gain employment. Accredited by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) this foundation degree covers multiple disciplines including web development (Html5, Css3, JavaScript, Php), programming (C++), human computer interaction, project management, networking and more. Given the increasing threat of cyber security, an underlying theme of security is underpinned in all subjects, enabling students to explore, analyse and problem solve scenarios and case studies. Upon successful completion of the course students will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to build, maintain and repair computer systems, websites, networks and software applications and can apply for related employment within the industry. Students can also choose to top up their foundation degree to a full degree by studying a top up in Computing. bsc (hons) Degree top up Computing (full time/part time) This computing top up course accredited by UCLan is designed to build on existing knowlege and skills and provide you with the opportunity to gain a high level qualification currently sought after by employers. Students will study a range of modules not limited to but including, Database driven websites, E-Business, OO methods in Computing and a Double project (Dissertation) where Students will collaborate with peers and gain links with local employers. Students will be equipped with the high level skills to enable them to work in a variety of industries and roles such as System Analyst, Web Developer, Programmer, Technician, Network Engineer and Security Analyst. Students can also choose to continue studying and progress onto a Masters level qualification. Ryan Knighton Foundation Degree in Computing I am really enjoying my foundation degree studies at Carlisle College following my passion for security and networking. I previously worked for the NHS in IT but I wanted to expand my academic knowledge. My goal on completion of my foundation degree is to study for an honours degree at UCLan in Networking, Computer Forensics and Computer Security before going back into employment in the sector. Sam Ogle Computing Tutor Whilst working as an IT Engineer at Innovia Films I studied for a foundation degree in computing at Carlisle College where my tutors were the inspiration in my decision to go into teaching here. Since working at Carlisle College I have obtained a first class honours degree in computing at Teesside University
7 12 HNC/HND General Engineering (MuLti-Skilled) Full Time/Day Release/Evenings This course is designed to develop students engineering skills, knowledge and understanding at a higher level and includes units based in industry, either as part of your regular work, or completed whilst on placement. HNC units include: Engineering Science Further Maths for Engineering Managing Project (workplace based) Thermodynamics Engineering Design Electrical and Electronic Principles Mechanical Principles Automation and Programmable Logic Control (PLC) we also offer programmes to improve your skills to gain access to hnc/hnd courses at carlisle college The HND requires the successful completion of further units following completion of the HNC qualification, units include: Professional Engineering management Lean Manufacturing Further Mechanical Principles Further Electrical Principles Further Mathematics Further Programmable Logic Control (PLC) You will benefit from modern equipment, professional engineering software and IT facilities. HND/HNC s are universally recognised in UK industry and are highly valued by employers, helping you to progress in employment within the engineering sector. They can also count towards incorporated membership of professional bodies. Students can also progress to top-up to an honours degree. Lewis Shaw HND General Engineering I first started Carlisle College in 2013 as part of my Engineering Apprenticeship with Nestle. Having completed Level 3 and 4, I progressed on to the HND where I attend college one day a week. Attending college has really enhanced my knowledge and performance in my job at Nestle and I hope to progress onto a degree level qualification. Sam Bell Engineering Tutor After leaving school I served a four year engineering apprenticeship with Pirelli Tyres in Carlisle. During my 15 years at Pirelli I gained qualifications up to an honours degree in mechanical engineering and worked as part of the maintenance team and as a projects engineer. I then worked for a private training company as an engineering assessor before becoming a tutor at Carlisle College, where my experience in the sector is proving invaluable. 13
8 14 Teacher Training All our Teacher Training Courses are accredited by the University of Central Lancashire FULL AND PART TIME UCLAN Pre-Service Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) About this course This qualification is open to all graduate, pre-service and pre-employment teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning Sector (16 years and older). The certificate is designed for students seeking employment in a full teaching role in the Further Education or regulated sector, having responsibility for students throughout the learning process and engaging in teaching on a range of levels within their subject specialism. Students are required to secure a voluntary placement in the Further Education or the regulated sector. Contact the Head of Teacher Training for advice. Entry Requirements A Degree or equivalent in your teaching subject specialism 5 GCSE s at grades C and above or equivalent (including English) The ability to communicate fluently, accurately and confidently in English. Pre-course guidance, interview and admission to the programme will include an interview with the Course Leader and where necessary with curriculum subject specialists to confirm that subject qualifications and vocational experience offered can be matched with a suitable teaching practice placement. It is recommended that all applicants have experience in a vocational area in which they propose to teach. Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice and the MEd as well as the Post Graduate CPD Framework. 15
9 16 UCLAN Preparation for Education and Training A first step course designed as an initial tool kit for trainees to commence a teaching career in the post-16 sector. It replaces the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) qualification. No teaching experience is needed and no teaching placement is required while on this course. This is a 15 week long evening course, after which students can progress to the Introductory or Intermediate certificates below. UCLAN Introductory Certificate in Education and Training An introductory course open to applicants hoping to teach in the post 16 sector and to those already teaching and training in the adult, community and work based sectors. It is a requirement of the programme that applicants should be employed as a teacher or have a placement as a teacher, trainer or tutor for a minimum of 30 hours during the programme. This is in addition to other entry requirements. Teaching should be with groups of learners although one to one teaching is acceptable for up to 10 of the 30 hours. This is a 25 week evening course, after which students can progress to the Intermediate certificate in Teaching, Learning and Assessment. UCLAN Intermediate Certificate in Teaching, Learning and Assessment An intermediate course open to applicants hoping to teach in the post 16 sector and to those already teaching and training in the adult, community and work based sectors. It is a requirement of the programme that applicants should be employed or have a teaching placement as a teacher, trainer or tutor for a minimum of 75 hours during the programme. This is in addition to the other entry requirements. Teaching should be across more than one level with a variety of learners. Teaching must be carried out predominantly with groups of learners, although one to one for up to 10 hours is acceptable. This is a 32 week (one academic year) evening course and is equivalent to half the full PGCE or Certificate in Education. Students can progress to year 2 of the Post Graduate/Certificate in Education. UCLAN Entry Requirements (for all the above courses) 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent. Must including English Language A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in your teaching vocational subject specialism A Level 4 qualification for academic subjects The ability to communicate fluently, accurately and confidently in English Note: Applicants who do not have an English GCSE grade A* to C will be required to successfully complete the university diagnostic test prior to entry. Work experience and occupation/professional certificates may be considered as an alternative to having a Level 3 qualification in the subject specialism.
