2 14-19 the future. It is estimated that today s learners will have between 10 & 14 jobs by the age of 38! 1 out of 4 workers is working for a company they have been employed by for less than 1 year! The top ten in demand jobs in 2011 did not exist in 2004!

3 14-19 the future.. We are currently preparing students for jobs that don t yet exist using technologies that haven t been invented to solve problems that we don t even know are problems yet! So we need to help our young people get on to the right pathway and courses for them

5 14-19 Policy update 2011 Reforms planned English Baccalaureate 5A*-C across (En, Ma, Sci, MFL, Geog or Hist) (broad set of academic subjects) Review of vocational qualifications to support progression to FE and HE Increase in apprenticeships Continue plans to raise minimum age to leave education or training to 17 in 2013

6 Our Aims at Lutterworth College Personalisation to provide what is best for your son / daughter to enable them to succeed and achieve as much as they can To provide interest, challenge and aid motivation To give the best possible chance of achieving at least Level 1 threshold and ideally Level 2 threshold (80%) students by offering a wide range of choices and providing recommendations for next year

7 Threshold levels? Level 1 Threshold = 5 A*-G grades including English, Mathematics and Science (all students) Level 2 Threshold = 5 A*-C grades including English, Mathematics and ideally Science (80% students) i.e. all those with at TAs of at least 5c,5c,5c (En, Ma, Sc)

8 National Qualification Framework levels Entry level = below GCSE grade G Level 1 = D to G grades at GCSE or equivalent such as Btec Level 1, Foundation awards Level 2 = A*-C grades at GCSE or equivalent such as Btec First, Key skills L2, Higher Diploma Level 3 = A levels or equivalent such as Btec L3, Advanced Diploma Level 4 + = Degree / HND

11 Each pathway has Core Subjects : everyone must do English, Maths, Science, Core PE, RE or Learning Skills Options students should do e.g D&T / MFL Other options free choice (with guidance) Pathways are a selection of courses they do not determine the English, maths or science set that a student will allocated. Setting is based on teacher assessments

27 Advice: Science Double Science is the national norm, it will provide a good foundation for A level Separate Science if: Definitely want to specialise in Science Willing to do the extra work and have excellent or good effort grades Have a high Science TA 6a+ and so recommended by high school Possible to do standard track and so use one option subject to give more time this year Single Science is only for Level 1 (D to G) students and has no progression route at 16

28 Advice: Design Technology BC and LHS students have started their Product Design D&T GCSE work Potential to finish Product Design by end of Year 10 They can then improve grade, do a specialist material based course or project (both ½ GCSE equivalent) Non LC / BC students complete GCSE in Year 10 For all students 2 nd choice is needed because timetable constraints

29 Advice: Modern Foreign Language courses Normally KS3 language gives best chance of a C grade Doing 2 languages is a good idea if possible New languages: Italian, Spanish, Japanese for students who want to do a language and unlikely to get a C grade

38 Advice: Foundation Learning For students recommended by their high schools Leads to Foundation Learning Certificate which can be a passport on to College covering: Vocational Course Functional Skills Personal Development Core Subjects Includes a vocational foundation course Either in school Btec Level 1 or CACHE Or at LSL Foundation Skills Centre (Wigston) and at South Leicestershire College covering Hair with Beauty or Motor Vehicle with Construction

39 Enterprise Centre A separate site for students who: Can find it difficult to cope with school Are not yet ready to go to college Need different types of challenges May have behavioural issues Willing to buy in to what we have to offer Would be helped by gaining positive self esteem from some time at the centre Always happy to show visitors round if you feel it may be appropriate
