1 UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI ACADEMIC DIVISION ANNUAL REPORT SECTIONS WITHIN THE ACADEMIC DIVISION The Academic Division is made up of the following Sections: - Academic Registrar s Office - Examination Office - Admissions Office - Deans/Senate Secretariat 2. FUNCTIONS OF THE ACADEMIC DIVISION The Academic Division has the following functions: - Preparation of Syllabus and Regulations, - Co-ordination of examinations, - Undergraduate students admissions, - Academic staff development, - Management of student records 3. ACHIEVEMENTS (a) (i) ADMISSIONS Admission of Module II students The University completed processing Module II admissions for January 2012 on time. An advertisement was carried in the Standard for the May intake. 5,000 copies of the supplement were produced for distribution to potential applicants. 1

2 Another advert for the Module II programmes was carried in the Daily Nation immediately the KCSE results were announced. Module II applicants for May and September 2012 intakes were admitted on time. The issue of admission forms for Module II has been moved from UNES G 3 to the Admissions Office. (ii) JAB Admissions Revisions for the 2010 applicants were conducted between 14 th to 31 st May For the first time, the revisions were undertaken online and details were published in the local media. A total of 4,447 students were admitted to the University of Nairobi. The first years reported on 3 rd September 2012 and orientation was done. (iii) Commencement Dates /2013 Academic Year Commencement of lectures was delayed due to the strike by lecturers and non-teaching staff. The lectures commenced on the dates indicated below: Monday October 1, nd, 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th and 6 th years in the Faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, the Schools of Built Environment, Arts and Design, Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Education, Computing and Informatics Monday October 8, nd and 4 th years in the Faculty of Arts, Schools of Education, Business, Law, Economics and the Institute of Anthropology, 2

3 Gender and African Studies (iv) Extension of working hours. In order to serve our clients better, especially Module II and III students, the Admissions Office is now open during the following hours: Weekdays 8 am 6 pm. Saturday 8 am 2 pm. The response from the students especially the working class has been positive. (b) EXAMINATIONS (i) Examinations and issue of transcripts The Central Examination Center processed a total of 11,885 examinations in (ii) Graduation Ceremonies 47 th University s Graduation Ceremony The University held its 47 th graduation ceremony on 24 th August The following graduands graduated: Bachelor Degree Awards 2,948 Diploma Awards 1,806 Masters Degree Awards 749 Postgraduate Diploma Awards 24 Doctor of Philosophy Awards 22 Total 5,549 The Guest of Honour was Dr. Joseph B. Wanjui, Chancellor of University of Nairobi Council. 3

4 48 th University s Graduation Ceremony The University held its 48 th graduation ceremony on 7 th December The following graduands graduated: Bachelor Degree Awards 4,340 Diploma Awards 666 Masters Degree Awards 2,312 Postgraduate Diploma Awards 65 Doctor of Philosophy Awards 57 Honorary Degree 1 Total 7,441 The Guest of Honour was Dr. Joseph B. Wanjui, Chancellor of University of Nairobi Council. During the Graduation, Mr. John Simba Chairman of Council was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy(Honaris Causa) Degree. (iii) Collection of Certificates The certificates for the graduands of the 24 th August 2012 graduation ceremony were ready for collection with effect from 28 th September The certificates for the graduands of the 7 th December 2012 graduation ceremony were ready for collection with effect from 24 th January (iv) Examination Disciplinary/Appeal Cases Within this period, the Center was able to complete a total of 29 examination disciplinary/appeal cases and communicate the results to the affected students within an average of 8 days from the date of the Senate recommendation. Master of Science in Leadership and Health Systems Master of Science in Medical Statistics 188 th Senate 11 th April 2012 Bachelor of Arts in German Studies Master of Library and Information Science TH CHE UNIVERSITIES EXHIBITION The Academic Division coordinated the participation of the University of Nairobi at the 9 th Exhibition of Kenyan Universities held at GTI Embu between 17 th and 19 th March The forum provided a good opportunity for the University of Nairobi to market its programmes in Western Kenya. The demand for more University of Nairobi programmes in the region has gone up. 6 4 TH UNIVERITSITY OPEN DAY The 4 th University of Nairobi Open day was held on 13 th and 14 th April 2012 at the Great Court. The event was officially opened by Ms. Stella Kilonzo, The Chief Executive, Capital Markets Authority and graced by Chancellor Dr. Joseph Wanjui and Chairman of the University Council Mr. J.P.N. Simba.. 7

8 7. CHALLENGES (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) Lack of storage facilities for bulky records and documents. Schools/Faculties/Institutes do not strictly adhere to the Senate approved Admission and Examination Schedules. Some Sections in the Division do not have adequate personnel. Academic staff do not submit examinations scripts for typing on time. Most Schools/Faculties/Institutes have not submitted Semester Schedules for Module II programmes. Despite a three month notice for application, quite a number of members of staff are still appealing to be allowed to apply for Staff Education Support Fund after the set dateline. 8. FUTURE PROJECTION The Academic Division seeks to foster closer working relationships with the industry, increase the number of foreign undergraduate students and improve on the University s visibility worldwide. To this end, the Division will hold discussions and invite comments from Chief Executive Officers and experts on various academic programmes management issues and participate in strategic Careers and Exhibition forums to market our programmes. 8
