Route buses will leave from the Front Circle Drive at 3:25 p.m. *4:30 p.m. - Activity routes will leave from East Lobby Entrance. *All non-athletic field trips will leave from East Lobby Entrance. *All athletic trips will leave and be dropped off at the Athletic entrance. If you have questions regarding transportation: Contact Rob Weiler at rweiler@dist113.org or Student Drop-Off / Pick-Up Parents/guardians can drop off and pick up students during school hours (7:15 a.m. - 3:14 p.m.) at the east entrance, which is located in the back parking lot. Student pick-up can occur at the front entrance from 8:30 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. daily and during weekends for activities and athletics reasons. On school days, only buses will be allowed in the front circle from 7:00-8:30 a.m. and from 2:15-3:40 p.m. Please adhere to all campus signs and staff directives while on campus. School Information Deerfield High School strongly encourages parents/guardians to use the District 113 and Deerfield High School websites to gather current information on bus schedules, special events, calendars, schedules, organizations, activities and policies. 4 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW Course Changes: Course placement changes may only occur between week 9 and week 11 of the first semester. A student may drop a course without penalty during the first 8 weeks of the semester. Second semester course changes will only be considered during the first two weeks of second semester. Course Placement Change Requests can be initiated by the teacher, parent/guardian or student by contacting the counselor. All appropriate interventions should be tried before a change to course placement (Honors, Standard, Survey) becomes final. Parent/guardian permission and approval by the department chair is required before a course placement change can be processed. The ideal time for a change is a natural junction point such as the semester. Changing a course placement may necessitate a change in textbooks and may result in moving other classes to accommodate the change. Dropping a Course: Students may drop a course up to and including the eighth week of the 1 st and 3 rd quarter. Dropping a course after this time may result in a grade penalty. Parent/guardian permission is required before a class can be dropped from a student s academic program. Grade Point Average is computed after each semester. Semester grades are cumulative and will impact grade point accordingly. Two grade point averages are reported: weighted and unweighted. The unweighted GPA is based on a 4-point scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) and the weighted GPA is based on an extra point (A=5, etc.). District 113 does not compute class rank. Health Information: Prior to the start of the school year, incoming freshmen are required to have a physical examination complete with immunization history on file in Health Services. The exam must be current within one year of the start date of school. Health Service office hours are 7:15 a.m. 3:15 p.m. on regular school days. Progress Reports are posted in Infinite Campus at mid-quarter. The reports can either be recommendations for improvement or take the form of a commendation. Teachers can issue a Progress Report at any time. Recommendations for improvement are generally issued in subjects in which the grade of the student is less than a C. Report Cards are posted in Infinite Campus four times during the school year. The semester grades are the official grade recorded on the permanent record. The semester report card will show grades for two quarters, a final exam grade, and a final grade for the semester. Schedule: Cycle days are named with the periods that do not meet. For example, on Cycle 78 days, classes scheduled during 7 th and 8 th periods do not meet. The only exception is a cycle 100 day, when every class period meets. Cycle LS indicates a one-hour late start to accommodate staff development. Summer School: Registration for summer classes will begin in February. Students may earn up to 2 credits per summer in Summer School. The location for Summer School 2017 has yet to be determined. Bus service is available for District 113 students. For more information regarding dates, course offerings, and time schedule, consult the District 113 website. The brochure will be posted online right before winter break.
5 ATTENDANCE Students 17 years of age or younger are within the Illinois compulsory school age and are mandated to attend school. Students who are 17 years of age or above and are enrolled in the District are also mandated to attend school. Students are expected to be on time to each assigned period, ready to work when the class begins. While the importance of regular and sustained attendance is recognized, the Board of Education understands that there will be times that students are absent for valid cause. Township High School District 113 Board of Education defines absences with valid cause as the following: Student illness Necessary medical appointments School related absences (e.g., field trips, college visits, participating in school activities and athletic competitions) Observance of a religious holiday Death in the immediate family Family emergencies Reasonable concern on the part of the parent for the health or safety of their child And/or other situation beyond control of the student as determined by a school administrator Parents/guardians are expected to report and provide a reason for all absences to the high school attendance office the day their child is absent from school. Medical documentation may be required for multiple successive absences and/or excessive absences due to illness or medical condition. By following proper procedures for authorizing a student and providing proper documentation, a student s absence will not count towards the 10 absences for audit status. Proper documentation includes, but is not limited to courts, military or medical notes. Procedures Regarding Absences: The Attendance Office must receive a parent/guardian call to authorize a student s absence. This call must be received by 11:59 p.m. on the day of the absence. Parents/guardians are responsible for informing school officials when their student(s) are absent. Parents/guardians should call the Attendance Office between the hours of 7:15 a.m. & 3:30 p.m. at: After 3:30 p.m. and on weekends, parents or guardians may leave a message on the attendance office voic . If a telephone call is not received by 11:59 p.m. the day of the absence, the absence will be unauthorized. Special circumstances will be considered by the Deans. If a student needs to leave school during the school day, a parent/guardian must notify the attendance office a minimum of 2 hours in advance of departure. The student must check out in the Attendance Office, pick up a pass, and present it to the staff member at either the Front Desk or the East Lobby upon leaving in order for the absences to be authorized. Students returning to school or coming in late must check in at the Attendance Office in order for the absence to be authorized. The Attendance Office must receive a phone call from a parent/guardian, or the absence will remain unauthorized. NOTE: Students may not be called out for a class period they do not wish to attend while remaining at school. If the student does not attend class but remains in the building, the absence will be considered unauthorized. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. If a student becomes ill at school, he or she must report to Health Services for attendance purposes. Students who become ill and leave school without seeing the nurse will be marked unauthorized for any classes that they miss. If a student begins the day ill, and later feels better and decides to come to school, the student must check in at the Attendance Office before going to class. Please review Attendance Policy and Procedures for our school in the Student Handbook.
6 Deerfield High School Counseling Department Freshman Morning Meetings There are many topics common to parents/guardians of freshmen. To respond to these topics and questions in a personal and interactive way, the counseling staff will hold a series of three meetings throughout the school year. The meetings will be one hour in length and cover the topics most often asked by the parents/guardians of freshmen. We will allow time for questions of a general nature and stay a while afterwards to respond to individual questions. All meetings will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be held in the Auditorium. Wednesday, October 26 Wednesday, January 11 Wednesday, April 26 Effective communication with teachers, reports cards, effective use of Infinite Campus, academic resources, preparing for final exams, four-year planning in advisory, important dates. Building a sophomore year schedule, the registration process, final exams/schedule, summer school registration, report cards and transcripts, important dates. Spring final exams, summer school information, summer sports camps, summer enrichment programs, book buy back, driving, important dates, the transition to sophomore year. Registration Prior to registration, freshmen will participate in the four-year planning process with their counselor in Freshman Advisory. In addition, students will learn about the curriculum from each subject area at a designated time during their respective classes. Freshman will register for sophomore classes during Freshman Advisory. Four Year Planning Dates November Counselors kick off four-year planning in Freshman Advisory Nov. 29 Dec. 9 Counselors work with students in Advisory to complete four-year plans Registration Dates January February February Counselors conduct pre-registration meetings in Freshman Advisory Freshmen finalize course requests with counselors in Advisory Course Notification deadline by 3:30 pm on February 22 nd
