3 Options for 2018: All students must be in full-time education, training or employment with training. This is known as full participation. School Sixth Form College Apprenticeship Part-time education or training if you are employed, self-employed or volunteering full-time Students have 3 years of free education (aged 16-19)

6 Subject choices: Big jump : year 11 to sixth form = manageable, time management, organisation. Choosing courses: enjoyment and talent. Background reading and homework vital. Entry requirements are there for a reason! Requirements provide a foundation needed for the course. Be realistic! Choose a course for the right reasons and to suit you.

7 Student life in sixth form: Skills: independence, time keeping and organisation. Independence = biggest thing! Clothes, free periods, common room and study area. Privileges for young adults Dedicated sixth form team : chats, advice, students best interests. Student leadership team in year 13. Roles such as : head girl and boy, fundraising team, prom committee, other prefect roles. Diverse range of people, socialising! Social skills, new friends. Warm and family feeling

8 Why come to Caludon? A levels: 100% A*-E pass rate. Over 50% of A level grades were A*, A or B. 95% pass rate for AS levels (highest in the city) High percentage of students go on to study at top universities. Students not going to university have all gone on to apprenticeships/college/ jobs with training. We support all students, whatever their ability, and help them to progress.

9 Level 3 courses on offer: Minimum entry requirements = 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including level 4 in English and Maths. Some A level subjects require 5 x grade 5s or a particular grade in the subject (typically grade 6). Maths A Level needs a grade 7. (Alternative = Core Maths which needs a grade 5. This is an AS only). Choose 3 subjects (for most students).

10 Level 3 courses on offer: Wide range of level 3 courses. Level 3 courses = AS & A levels or Applied General courses, usually BTEC level 3 courses. Subjects are dependent on numbers and teacher availability, but most will run. Access to a course at the 19 schools in Coventry is also possible, subject to availability.

11 A levels: All A level courses are now new A levels. Students take AS level in year 12 (for most subjects) and the A level in year 13. AS level = 40% of the content of A level, but does NOT count towards the A level. They are completely separate qualifications.

12 Vocational qualifications: More coursework based, though NOT 100% coursework as in the past. 33% exam, 25% externally marked component, 42% internal assessment. The internally assessed coursework is in the 2 nd year of the course. Many of our students do a mixture of A levels and BTEC level 3 qualifications. Travel and tourism & Music currently still 100% coursework.

14 One Year course on offer: For students without grade 4 in Maths and/or English: Opportunity to resit Maths and/or English GCSEs. Opportunity to resit GCSE Science. A 1 year BTEC level 3 course in Travel and Tourism, equivalent to an AS level. Possibility of one further qualification for those students retaking only one GCSE and meeting other requirements.

15 One Year course on offer: No specific qualifications required. Positive attitude to learning needed for success. Resit opportunities in November and May. Students who achieve level 4 in Maths and English by August 2019, can continue to study level 3 qualifications for 2 more years. Students without level 4 in both Maths and English by August 2019 will move on to college courses and/or apprenticeships.

18 Pastoral support What makes Caludon Sixth Form stand out (Andy Swallow Ofsted inspector November 2017) : Leaders of the sixth form exude high aspirations for all students and staff. The quality of care and guidance was found to be excellent. Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of students [is] a strength. The care and guidance that students are offered throughout their time in the sixth form, are of a high quality. Students are especially praiseworthy of tutors, house leaders and staff in the sixth form office. Sixth form students are proud of their school and act as good role models.

22 What happens next? 1. TODAY S OPEN EVENING Visit subject stands and gather information. Read the prospectus. Ask questions. For a subject which is not offered here at Caludon, talk to one of the Sixth Form team about consortia arrangements.

23 What happens next? 2. APPLICATION FORM Caludon students fill in an initial form indicating options for the Sixth Form (or alternative). Students from other schools fill in the application form for external students. Forms available from Sixth Form staff OR on the website (OR in reception tonight).

24 What happens next? 3. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Students will need to look carefully at the Caludon Sixth Form entry requirements for each subject. Caludon students will then need to ask subject staff to sign the form for AS level choices. Forms need to be returned to tutors by Thursday 14 th December. External students should return forms to the Sixth Form : sixthformteam@caludoncastle.co.uk

25 What happens next? 4. APPLICATIONS Internal Applications: During January, all Caludon Year 11 students who are interested in staying on will have a meeting with one of the sixth form team. External Applications: We will get references from your current school and will invite students who have applied to have a meeting to discuss possible courses.

26 What happens next? 5. DECISIONS Decisions are made about whether all courses can run. Timetable blocks are built based on students choices. If courses are not running or there is a problem with a combination, we will contact the student. Once the blocks are created, students can change their minds but will have to choose from the existing blocks.

27 What happens next? 6. INDUCTION There will be two Sixth Form induction days in July, when students will be able to sample lessons and talk to the Post 16 team. Final main enrolment takes place on GCSE results day and the following day. Sixth Form starts in September!
