1 FACT SHEET Qualification Bachelor of Commerce in Management Marketing B.Com. (Management Marketing) SAQA ID 88683, NQF Level 7, minimum Credits 374 This unique qualification consists of sixty-four percent (64%) of the total credits in Management disciplines and twenty-four percent (24%) of the total credits in Marketing disciplines. Minimum Entry Requirements A minimum requirement for admission into the degree is a: National Senior Certificate (NSC), with English as one of the subjects passed and with endorsement for admission to Bachelor s degree study; or National Certificate (Vocational) (NC(V)), with English as one of the subjects passed and with endorsement for admission to Bachelor s degree study; or Prior to 2009, Senior Certificate with English as one of the subjects passed and with endorsement for University or Matriculation Exemption. Alternative Entry Requirements A number of higher education qualifications may meet the requirement for admission into the degree: Higher Certificate, NQF (HEQF) Level 5, minimum Credits 120; or Advanced Certificate, NQF (HEQF) Level 6, minimum Credits 120; or Diploma, NQF (HEQF) Level 6, minimum Credits 360; or Equivalent qualification from a foreign higher education institution, see section on Foreign Applicants below. Foreign Applicants Foreign students who do not hold a South African school leaving certificate must present a Grade 12 equivalence verification with endorsement for admission to Bachelor s degree study from the South African Matriculation Board. The Board can be contacted on /2 or exemptions@hesa-enrol.ac.za. Also, foreign applicants are required to provide proof of proficiency in English (TOEFL score of 550, or IELTS overall band score of 6.0.) prior to admission to the qualification. Students who have qualifications from foreign higher education institutions must present an equivalence certificate from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) which can be contacted on +27-(0) or visit Applying to Transfer-in Credits Boston allows students with completed credits from recognised higher education institutions to apply for credit transfers. Credit transfers will only be considered if accompanied by full academic records with a statement of satisfactory or good conduct. Students interested in applying will be considered individually by the Academic Committee based at the Head Office in Orange Grove, see relevant section in the Application for Admission Form. RPL Applicants Boston admits a small number of students via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). 2 What is the Duration of Study? Based on the credits and notional hours of this qualification, the minimum duration is six (6) semesters over a period of three (3) years, and the maximum duration is six (6) years. For more information see Table overleaf. What is the Purpose of the Qualification? Management and marketing are essential elements of modern commerce. The purpose of the qualification is to ensure that students are provided with the knowledge, theory and methodology of the important disciplines in management and marketing. This Bachelor s degree equips students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for career opportunities in the fields of business, management and marketing which can support the junior, middle and senior management functions within any organisation. This unique qualification supports occupations such as: Store, Department, Business Unit or General Manager Marketing and/or Brand Manager Customer Relationship, Key Account or Public Relations Representative or Manager Marketing, Brand and/or Product Researcher and/or Analyst Service, Sales or Product Representative and/or Manager Business, Marketing, Brand or Public Relations Advisor Media and/or Advertising Consultant What are the Programme Outcomes? On completion of the programme, graduates will have the necessary knowledge and practical skills required to: Apply general business principles to real life situations, and interpret economic realities of local and global communities Manage financial, marketing and technology resources in organisations Analyse financial and brand information Demonstrate entrepreneurial and project management skills Identify the socio-economic needs of a society and display cultural sensitivity within organisations What do I require to Pass a Module? Students will need an overall mark of fifty percent (50%) to pass a module. Students who do not achieve a pass mark will be provided one (1) further opportunity to retake assessments at an additional re-assessment fee, before being required to participate in counselling and possible reregistration for a module. How is the Overall Mark Calculated? The overall mark will be calculated from the student s performance on formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments (also known as assignments or tests) will count forty percent (40%) towards the overall mark and summative assessments (the final exam) will count sixty percent (60%). Each module will have at least one (1) formative assessment. Students will need to obtain fifty percent (50%) in their formative assessments to be allowed to attempt their summative assessment. What is the Curriculum? The Boston Bachelor of Commerce degree programme consists of twenty (25) compulsory modules and one (1) elective module. Page 2 of 9

4 How many modules can I take each semester? Minimum is one (1) module per semester, this will ensure students remain academically active. The Maximum number of modules you can take in any one semester is dependent on the number of credits per module. It is not recommended for students to take in excess of sixty-six (66) credits per semester. For the number of credits per module see curriculum above. What is the language of teaching and learning? English is the language for communication, instruction and assessment at Boston. What is the mode of delivery? Distance learning supported by access to our nationwide tuition centres, see list attached. What is a Tuition Centre? Boston s network of tuition centres grants our distance learners access to computers, online assessments, Technology Based Training material, electronic library facilities, examination venues and administrative services. All students are recommended to select a tuition centre and encouraged to make daily use of the facilities for the duration of their degree studies. Currently video lectures are only viewable at our tuition centres. Students who do not make use of their selected tuition centre will therefore not be able to take advantage of this aspect of training. What materials will I require to Study? It is absolutely compulsory that students have access to a computer and internet. Certain course material and assessments will only be accessible online or electronically. Students without computer or internet access must make use of a Boston Tuition Centre. Boston will provide all prescribed e-textbooks, course outlines, timetables, sample assessments, printed study guides, workbooks (where applicable) and tutor videos for each module. Therefore there will be no requirement to purchase any additional prescribed materials. Where do I complete my Assessments? All students must select a tuition centre for assessment purposes. Summative assessments (final examinations) will be conducted at the selected tuition centre. The venue for formative assessments will depend on the specific module requirements. Assignments will be uploaded into our online system which can be done from home or at the selected tuition centre. Tests will be conducted at tuition centres only. Who will provide me with Academic and Tuition Support? Boston has appointed qualified and experienced lecturers to provide support to learners. Students can contact lecturers at any time via , or alternatively book telephonic appointments. Face-toface appointments can also be arranged but these will be by appointment only and will take place exclusively at Boston s Head Office in Orange Grove. Can I further my studies when I graduate? The qualification is registered at NQF (HEQF) Level 7 and will provide for articulation options into NQF (HEQF) Level 8 qualifications. Graduates may proceed to Postgraduate Diplomas or Honours degrees in a related discipline at any number of public universities, private or foreign higher education institutions. In order to gain entry into these programmes students will have to meet the admission and selection criteria of the receiving institution. Page 4 of 9

6 When can I apply and how much are the Application Fees? Applications will open on 7 January There are no application fees payable. The closing date for applications for Semester 1 is at 12h00 on Friday 1 st February The closing date for applications for Semester 2 is at 12h00 on Friday 5 th July How do I Apply? There are two options available for applications, for more information see Diagram overleaf. Option 1: Visit the following webpage Complete the online Application for Admission Form and upload all the necessary supporting documentation. Option 2: Visit a tuition centre and obtain the Application for Admission Form. Complete the form and return it to the tuition centre with all necessary supporting documentation. The centre will then capture and submit it online on your behalf to Head Office in Orange Grove for evaluation. What do I do if I am accepted? If you are accepted you will be required to register. In order to register you will need to complete the Registration Contract and pay the registration fee. Once you have paid your registration fee and completed the Registration Contract you can return the contract and proof of payment to Head Office in Orange Grove or your Boston Tuition Centre. Contracts handed in at a tuition centre will be captured and submitted online on your behalf to Head Office for confirmation of your registration and student number. The closing date for registrations for Semester 1 is at 12h00 on Friday 8 th February The closing date for registrations for Semester 2 is at 12h00 on Friday 19 th July Page 6 of 9
7 Admissions Process Submission Option 1: Complete the online 'Application for Admission Form' and upload your documents from home Option 2: Obtian and Complete the 'Application for Admission Form' and return it to your Boston Tuition Centre. The centre will caputre and submit it on your behalf to Head Office in Orange Grove for evaluation Once recieved at Head Office a confirmatory message will be sent to the applicant and the centre Evaluation The submission is checked and all supporting documentation is verified at Head Office in Orange Grove The Academic Committee reviews complete applications and notifies applicants and the Boston Tuition Centre of the outcome Registration Successful applicants will be required to complete the 'Registration Contract' and pay the registration fee to finalise their registration The 'Registration Contract' is then handed in at Head Office in Orange Grove or at your Boston Tuition Centre (the centre will capture and submit it on your behalf) following which your student number will be issued Unsuccessful applicants will be invited to apply for an alternate qualification Page 7 of 9
