2 Your Future. Our Mission. In 2015, the residents of the Aldine ISD passed a school bond referendum, which included building a Career and Technical Education High School. This new campus will allow Aldine to provide students an opportunity to gain valuable workforce skills. The CTE High School will open in the fall of The AISD CTE program continues to grow as high school campuses focus on implementing House Bill 5. The bill known as HB5 encourages students to graduate with a program area endorsement. It also encourages students to obtain an industry standard recognized national certification. Currently, the CTE Department serves approximately 27 percent of the District s student population. The figure includes eighth grade students to high school seniors. The CTE High School will enable AISD students to meet the growing demands of the workforce. The CTE High School will be a state-ofthe-art educational training facility. Students will be able to continue their education and training at a two- or four-year college after high school. The facility will emulate the business/industry and the college environments. Students will use business- and industry-standard technology, software, hardware and equipment. The goals for each student attending the CTE High School is to: Complete a Foundation Program of Study With Endorsement, Complete an industry-based certificate and/or, Complete college-level/workforce certificate and/or, Complete college hours toward an associate s degree. The CTE High School will provide new program opportunities for students in the multiple areas, inlcuding Animation, Audio/Video Production, Computer Programming & Game Design, Construction Technology, Dental Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Physical Therapy Assistant (see a complete list of programs on Page 7). Additionally, the District is centralizing several programs to better serve the entire student population. The changes will increase CTE programs flexibility. And this will increase adaptability to meet the changing technology needs of those programs. The CTE High School will serve 1,500 ninth through 12th grade students as a new school of choice in the district. This school will be a school of choice. The District will accept students through an application process. I encourage students and parents to consider this unique opportunity. 3 High-Paying Occupations Preparing for the Future Career-Focused Education Admission Requirements A New Option in 2018 Skilled Workers in Demand Construction on Aldine ISD s new Career and Technical Education High School (CTEHS) is ongoing. The career-focused curriculum and programs will prepare students for the workforce. Students will develop specific academic, intellectual and technical knowledge and experiences. They will gain the 21st century skills necessary to be competitive in the global workforce. The CTEHS complements the District s growing range of options for students. The District s main goal is to ensure all students graduate from high school career and college ready. Specialized Setting The state-of-the-art campus and training facility is set to open in fall The specialized setting will provide CTEHS students with access to real-world experiences and career training. Students will graduate with licences, workforce certifications and hours toward post-secondary education. Dual credit courses help students finish college early and even save on college costs. Personalized Learning In order to create a supportive personalized learning environment, the CTEHS will have a limited campus enrollment. Many of these high-paying jobs do not require a two- or four-year college degree. CTEHS students will be able to earn industry-recognized certifications. This will allow them to enter the workforce upon graduation. A Career-Focused High School The 227,000 square-foot building will house specialized programs. In 2018, the following CTE programs will move from the traditional high schools to the CTEHS. These programs are emergency medical technicians, construction technology, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigiration and hospitality services. Students who want to attend the Career and Technical Education High School must apply. The CTEHS will start accepting applications in the fall of Who Can Apply? Students who are in grades eighth through 10th during the school year can apply. They will form the first class of ninth, 10th and 11th graders at the campus in Student Requirements The selection panel will base admission on a student s Program of Study/HB5 Endorsement. Aldine ISD students develop these as part of the middle school College and Career Readiness course. Applicants must: Have a Record of Satisfactory Performance related to Attendance, Behavior and Academics. Transportation Aldine ISD provides transportation for all students who qualify for bus services. Extra Curricular Activities Students enrolled at the CTEHS will not participate in any activities at another Aldine ISD high school such as band, choir, athletics, drill team, etc. Students will be required to participate in a Career and Technology Student Organization related to their program of study at the CTEHS. Public School Choice The CTEHS forms part of the District s growing range of options for students. The District offers magnet schools, the International Baccalaureate continuum, early college campuses and now the CTEHS. Specialized campuses tap into students specific interests and learning styles. Steve Jobs Partnerships Industry Input In developing the campus design and curriuclum, the District received input from educators, community members and business partners. An Advisory Council will regularly review curriculum to ensure programs adequately prepare students for the workplace. The Council will use and adapt to workforce data, industry input along with labor market needs and trends to keep education and programs at the CTEHS rigorous and current. Technology, software/hardware and equipment at the campus will closely resemble that found in industry. All the labs will support career-training programs. The design ensures that each student s experience is enriching and supporting his or her career pathway. One example of powerful work-based learning are internships. Industry superivisors will oversee students development and workforce performance. The experience will serve as a stepping stone for student career development. This reduces college costs for many students and their families. Other opportunities include earning workforce Level I certificates in specialized programs. College Partnerships Houston Community College Lone Star College Prairie View A&M University - College of Nursing - College of Engineering Texas A&M University - College of Engineering Industry Culture and Focus Staffing will include qualified educators, certified and licensed in content areas. The rigorous course standards will support purposely designed programs. To be ready for their future path, students must know the terminology. They must be well-versed in industry specific vocabulary. CTEHS students will be able to read and comprehend industry-specific informational/technical texts. They must also be able to speak and write clearly. Capstone courses will give students opportunities to earn industry certifications. This will allow them to enter the workforce possessing the knowledge and skills to succeed in a field. Students will acquire personal traits necessary to be successful in the workspace. These include good communication, time-management, goal setting, problem solving and team building. CTEHS students will also take part in industry-relevant content. Aside from internships and general education integration, this also includes CTE student organizations such as Career and Technical Education Student Organizations (CTSOs), which engage students in occupational content application. CTSOs are another platform to enhance students 21st century skills and leadership development. Your Future, Our Mission Upon completion of their program of study, students will be better prepared to enter the professional workforce. And they will possess the skills employers desire. Profile of a CTEHS Student Take advantage of work-based learning opportunities. Take advantage and earn industry credentials/certifications. Participate in CTSOs for his/her respective program of study. Take advantage of postsecondary credit opportunities. Complete complex-based projects; students must use skills specific to the industry in a lab or in a classroom setting. View himself/herself as a professional, preparing for his/her chosen postsecondary pathway. Demonstrate soft skills appropriate to the professional environment of her/his CTE program of study. Complete complex projects that simulate real world application. Correctly use the mathematical concepts and computations required by his/her CTE course or program of study. Demonstrate safety and understand the reasoning and rationale behind safety practices related to his/her CTE program of study. Use industry appropriate technology to demonstrate his/her knowledge content and its practical uses in a professional setting. Take part in a team that models what professional teams look like and how they operate. Communicate clearly and precisely on content through oral presentations and written work, including project write-ups, research papers and presentations.
