Determine priorities and objectives for study abroad Find about 3-5 programs that are interesting to you Work with IPFW Study Abroad advisor in WU145 then contact the program provider for more information Meet with your academic advisor to discuss the best time to go and classes needed before and during trip Meet with financial aid office to talk about how your aid will apply

9 Choosing a Program Examine Your Objectives What aspects of study abroad are important to you--courses, locale, cultural experiences, learning a language, opportunity to participate in internship or service learning, travel? Primary Program Considerations Where would you like to study? What is your foreign language ability? How long do you want to stay a semester, a summer, a year, a short-term? How much does the program cost? Will you need financial assistance to carry out your plans? (Most regular financial aid may be applied to the cost of IPFW/IU/Purdue study abroad programs, but may not always apply to programs sponsored by other institutions.) Academic Considerations Does your GPA meet the requirement? Do you want to take classes in English or the local language? Do you have specific degree requirements to fulfill while overseas? What do departmental advisors think of your plans?

10 Other questions Personal Considerations Would you prefer to study with other Americans, students of the host country and other international students, or with a combination of both? Do you want a study abroad program to arrange your housing, meals, curriculum and travel or would you prefer to make these arrangements yourself? Because of your own family responsibilities, do you want to consider having a family member accompany you abroad? Would you prefer to live with a family, with students from the host country, or with other Americans? IU/Purdue and Outside Program Considerations Students considering non IPFW programs need to consider the following: Transfer of credits Cost of program Reputation of program/experience of past students Applicability of courses to degree requirements Senior requirements Possibility of transferring financial aid (loans, grants and scholarships) to the non- IPFW/IU/Purdue program

11 Types of Programs Faculty Led Programs through IPFW Division of Continuing Studies 4 days to 4 weeks. 12 Types of Programs Exchange Programs are based on agreements that IPFW has made with other universities and ISEP. IU and Purdue also have partners around the world. Cost: University tuition plus insurance, airfare, housing Assistance: supportive international office staff but independent student at university Living: often residence halls or university-owned apartments. Some homestay options. Classes: local and international students Registration: broadest selection of courses, but it is possible that you will not be able to take exactly what you had anticipated. Right for students who: prefer to pay Purdue, IU, IPFW tuition and fees for their program, yearn for independence, want to be fully integrated into the local culture, want to plan their own semester activities and excursions, desire a broad selection of courses

13 Types of Programs Third-Party Provider Programs- programs organized by agencies specializing in international education (ISEP-Direct, Arcadia, CIEE, IES, IFSA, DIS, etc.). Application, payment, and organized through provider. Financial aid can be applied to these program costs, and credits will transfer. Programs are available for the summer, semester or academic year. Cost: pay the program fees directly to the co-sponsor. comprehensive program fee: tuition, housing, meals, international health insurance, and a few excursions. Assistance: usually have an office, a resident director and a staff that offer a high level of support and assistance to students. Living: residence halls, apartments or private homes with local families. Classes: Many co-sponsored programs are organized specifically for Americans and other international students. However, participants may sometimes take one or more courses at the overseas university affiliated with the program. Some programs have special themes such as Museums in Paris, Political Science in the EU, or Health & Spanish. Registration: Often developed especially for program participants. Classes taught in English or language for acquisition programs. Right for students who: prefer a program designed specifically for U.S. students want a lot of on-site support prefer to travel with organized excursions
