3 ABOUT NEW CITY COLLEGE New City College is the group name for the three merged east London colleges of Hackney Community College, Tower Hamlets College and Redbridge College. We are now the second largest college in London and eighth largest in England with 20,000 students. We have campuses in each of our three boroughs, where these higher education courses are taught. Across each of the campuses, we have partnership agreements with London universities which means on completion of your course with us, you could progress onto year two or three of a degree. This not only saves you time, but also money! We currently have partnership agreements with:
4 COURSE ENTRY CHECKLIST To qualify for one of our higher education courses you need to be: Aged over 18 years Have either a Level 3 qualification like A-levels or a vocational qualification like a BTEC or Access to Higher Education diploma or Have relevant work experience in the subject area or be working presently in the field you want to study if you haven t got a Level 3 qualification. Non-native English speakers or those who have not studied the final two years of school in English, should demonstrate capability in English at IELT 5.5 standard. FUNDING YOUR COURSE Our higher education courses qualify for funding from the Student Loans Company. You would normally apply for this loan at the time of your application and this will cover your tuition fees at the college. Our course advisers are available to help you through the application process, including the funding options. Please see page 27 for contact details at each campus. If you want to progress to university at the end of your course, you could gain entry to year two or three of a degree at one of our partner universities.* Mature students with relevant knowledge and skills, demonstrating commitment to the chosen subject. *Dependent on individual university entry criteria. 7 PEARSON BTEC LEVEL 5 HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN ART & DESIGN (GRAPHIC DESIGN) Duration: 2 years Study: Full-time Cost: 5,750 per year Campus: Redbridge Campus, Chadwell ABOUT THE COURSE This is a course for designers who are aged 18 and over and who wish to build portfolios demonstrating a complete range of graphical skills equipping them to work in the design industry. This is a demanding and intensive training course offering comprehensive training for designers. WHAT WILL I STUDY? ENTRY CRITERIA You must have talent, self-belief, motivation, commitment, dedication, self-discipline and an open attitude. 11 PEARSON BTEC LEVEL 4 HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN COMPUTING (RQF) Duration: 1 year Study: Full-time Cost: 5,030 Campus: Tower Hamlets, Poplar ABOUT THE COURSE At Level 4 you will develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the computing sector through six core units, which include one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment. WHAT WILL I STUDY? 13 FOUNDATION DEGREE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD STUDIES Duration: 2 years Study: Full-time Cost: 6,000 per year Campus: Hackney ABOUT THE COURSE This course is for people working with young children in public, private, voluntary and independent childcare and education settings. It is a higher-level qualification and offers career development for people working as child minders or in group settings such as a nursery, kindergarten, pre-school, community crèche or children s centre environment. This course is taught in partnership with London Metropolitan University. WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will learn about the importance of play, language and learning, and safeguarding. You will also be expected to assess children learning within the EYFS framework. ENTRY CRITERIA NVQ Level 3 in Child Care and Education or equivalent GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C) or Level 2 equivalent in English Language and maths, or be working towards achieving them In addition: Two years full-time experience working with children in an early years or school setting Currently working in early years, as either a paid employee or volunteer (12 hours minimum) DBS clearance to work with children (evidence required) One satisfactory reference Non-native English speakers or those who have not studied the final two years of school in English, should demonstrate capability in English at IELT 5.5 standard You will need to apply through the UCAS procedure, under the institution of London Metropolitan University using course code X945-H and course name Early Childhood Studies FdA, Location: New City College Hackney Campus (Hackney Community College) WHAT COULD I DO NEXT? 17 PEARSON BTEC LEVEL 5 HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN APPLIED BIOLOGY Duration: 2 years Study: Full-time Cost: 5,750 per year Campus: Redbridge Campus, Chadwell Heath ABOUT THE COURSE This course is for anyone wanting to improve their knowledge of biology. The course will develop your knowledge, practical skills and values needed to succeed in employment in biologicallybased industries. You will need to complete four weeks of work experience within the health sector to develop employability skills. WHAT WILL I STUDY? 19 PEARSON BTEC LEVEL 4 CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING Duration: 1 year Study: Part-time Cost: 1,430 Campus: Redbridge Campus, Chadwell Heath ABOUT THE COURSE The Certificate in Education and Training is a professional qualification for people teaching in further education colleges, adult education, and a wide range of other training and educational settings outside the school sector. This qualification provides a route to Pearson BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. This is a part-time course lasting six months. Classes are held on Thursdays from 4-8pm. WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study a range of subjects, including: Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training Delivering education and training Assessing learning in education and training Using resources for education and training Inclusive practice L3 (3 Credits) L4 (3 Credits) L4 (6 Credits) L4 (6 Credits) L4 (3 Credits) A lot of the course is focused on practical teaching. You will gain experience of teaching and learning alongside other professionals, with support from tutors and learning technologists. Practical experience allows you to gain competence in planning teaching and learning, and in working with learners both in formal classrooms and in student-centred learning situations. You will also be expected to complete a minimum of three hours of observed teaching practice. A DBS will be completed before you are offered a place. ENTRY CRITERIA You will need to hold a vocational and/or academic qualification of at least one level above that of the learners taught and ideally hold a Level 3 qualification in your subject specialism You must also be able to read, write and communicate clearly and accurately enough to meet the requirements of the course, and have ICT skills (or be willing to develop them) DBS clearance (evidence required) Non-native English speakers or those who have not studied the final two years of school in English, should demonstrate capability in English at IELT 5.5 standard WHAT COULD I DO NEXT? There is a government requirement that all teachers and trainers working in the further and adult education sector should acquire a teaching qualification. The growth of the lifelong learning sector should enhance your career opportunities. Pearson BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training Possible employment opportunities and salary range: Teaching 24,202-36,524 You will also undertake project work such as developing new course materials. Academic work includes critically examining creativity in teaching, quality assurance and professional issues. Specialist units will allow you to explore particular areas of interest. 21 PEARSON BTEC LEVEL 5 DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING Duration: 1 year Study: Part-time Cost: 4,280 Campus: Redbridge Campus, Chadwell Heath ABOUT THE COURSE The Diploma in Education and Training is a professional qualification for people teaching in further education colleges, adult education, and a wide range of other training and educational settings that are outside the school sector. This qualification provides a route to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study a range of subjects, including: Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training Theories, principles and models in education and training Wider professional practice and development in education and training Developing blended learning resources for education and training Action research Much of the course is focused on practical teaching. Practical experience allows you to gain competence in planning teaching, learning and assessment, and in working with students both in formal classrooms and in student-centred learning situations. ENTRY CRITERIA You will need to hold a vocational and/or academic qualification of at least one level above that of the students taught and ideally hold a Level 3 qualification in your subject specialism You must also be able to read, write and communicate clearly and accurately enough to meet the requirements of the course, and have ICT skills (or be willing to develop them) You should be able to meet the practice requirements, as a lecturer or trainer, or be able to meet the practice requirements of the qualification for a minimum of 100 hours at a recognised training or educational institution Non-native English speakers or those who have not studied the final two years of school in English, should demonstrate capability in English at IELT 5.5 standard WHAT COULD I DO NEXT? 23 PEARSON LEVEL 5 DIPLOMA IN TEACHING AND TRAINING (DET) Duration: 4 terms Study: part-time Cost: 3,000 Campus: Hackney ABOUT THE COURSE The Diploma in Teaching and Training is for anyone working as or planning to become a fully qualified teacher in further, adult or continuing education (the post-16 sector). It gives you the opportunity to: develop knowledge related to teaching and learning develop skills in and learn about teaching, training and tutoring achieve a nationally-recognised Level 5 qualification WHAT WILL I STUDY? The qualification is made up of mandatory and optional units through which you will build up credits towards the Diploma. We offer the following units: Mandatory units (Total 20 credits at level 4; 55 credits at level 5) Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training Theories, principles and models in education and training Wider professional practice and development in education and training Optional units (15+6 credits at level 4; 30 credits at level 5) Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area Inclusive practice Working with individual learners Using study skills approaches and techniques to enhance the learning of others ENTRY CRITERIA Level 3 qualification in the subject you intend to teach and GCSEs grades 9-4 (A*-C) or Level 2 equivalent in English and maths. 25 CPCAB LEVEL 4 DIPLOMA IN THERAPEUTIC COUNSELLING Duration: 2 year Study: Part-time Cost: 2,335 per year Campus: Hackney ABOUT THE COURSE This course will deepen your understanding of yourself and others, study the Person-Centred core model and comparative frameworks, and learn to integrate theory and practice in a workplace setting. You will attend college seven hours per week for 72 weeks, and study for about another four hours per week outside of college timetabled hours. WHAT WILL I STUDY? A consistent focus on personal development The development of skillful practice via experiential learning The opportunity to build your confidence and expertise as a counsellor A pathway onto the Open University Foundation Degree in Counselling ENTRY CRITERIA You must be at least 21 years old Complete a written application and attend an interview You should already have both the Level 2 and 3 Counselling qualifications. There is a requirement for 100 workplace supervised client hours and ten hours personal therapy, in accordance with accreditation requirements WHAT COULD I DO NEXT?
