1 2016 Excellence in Medical Student Career Advising Awards Program Award Background Since its inception in 1999, Careers in Medicine has supported the career decisions of medical students by working hand-in-hand with school liaisons who implement career development programs locally. Together, we have transformed medical student career development by formalizing programs, implementing innovative curricula, and training medical school advisors. In continuing to recognize the importance of effective career decision making and those who support students in this process, Careers in Medicine offers the Excellence in Medical Student Career Advising awards. In addition to the program and individual advisor awards, for the 2016 award season we are introducing a support staff award, which will recognize student affairs staff who may not be directly responsible for student advising, but are nonetheless critical to the success of the advising program. The program award is described below, along with the selection criteria, nomination process, and decision and awarding process. Excellence in Medical Student Career Advising Program Award Description The goal of offering career services is to assist students in developing, evaluating and implementing their individual career, education, and employment plans (CAS Standards and Guidelines, 2012). The Excellence in Medical Student Career Advising Program Award acknowledges the development and/or continued administration of a career development program for medical students that meets these goals. It recognizes that one or multiple individuals may be involved in this effort and that the program is effective within the context it is delivered. Eligibility 1. Programs at AAMC-member or affiliate-member medical schools and at osteopathic schools subscribed to Careers in Medicine during the current award cycle are eligible to submit a nomination. 2. Programs at schools with faculty or staff serving as members of the Careers in Medicine Advisory Committee during the award cycle are ineligible for consideration for this award. After the advisory committee member s term of office ends, the school s program can then be eligible for consideration. 3. Previous program award recipients are ineligible. 4. Only one nomination per institution will be considered. Criteria Evidence of the following qualities and criteria will be used to evaluate nominations: The program 1. Is guided by appropriate career development theories a. Reflective of the developmental and demographic profiles of the student body 1

2 b. Responsive to the needs of individuals and the population of medical students c. Recognizes that career decisions are linked to personal, psychosocial, developmental, and cultural aspects of one s life and support the individual in these domains 2. Supports all phases of the career decision making process (self-understanding, career exploration, decision making, and implementation a. Includes career advising, counseling, and education; b. Assist students in understanding individual interests, values, and skills related to specialty and residency program choice c. Provides information and resources on specialties; experiential education; and support for residency selection and application process 3. Is integrated into the medical school curriculum, formally or informally a. Designed intentionally, current, and relevant b. Provides a combination of individual appointments, group programs, career planning courses, and special events c. Encourages students to access career services early in medical school 4. Offers accurate, up-to-date resources, information, and training to adequately prepare faculty and career advisors for the roles. (Based on CAS Standards and Guidelines, 2012). Nomination Nominations may be submitted by a medical school dean, designee, OSR representative, or other faculty member. The nomination must include: a completed nomination packet at least one(1) and no more than three (3) supporting documents (these can include but are not limited to websites, evaluations, syllabi, handouts, brochures, photographs, and relevant articles/publications) a 200-word overview of the program To nominate a program for this award, please complete the form and supporting documentation and to careersinmedicine@aamc.org by midnight on July 22, Decision and Awarding Process The nomination process will kick-off May 23, Nominations are due July 22, The CiM Advisory Committee will select the awardees and the chair of the Advisory Committee will present the award during Learn Serve Lead 2016: The AAMC Annual Meeting. Winners will receive a crystal award. 2
