2 Internship in Hospitality and Tourism Administration Introduction An 800-hour internship is a requirement of the Hospitality and Tourism Administration (HTA) degree, and must be completed prior to the last semester of a student s coursework (not applicable if completed during the summer). Students may choose to complete the full 800 hours over the course of a 6-month internship or complete two 400-hour summer internships. Students who have prior hospitality industry experience should consult with the internship coordinator to determine if it may count as a portion of the internship requirement. In all cases a student must complete at least one 400-hour internship requirement while enrolled in the HTA program. 400-HOUR INTERNSHIP The 400-hour internships are completed during two summer sessions of a student s academic career. The first internship should be accomplished during the second summer or end of the Sophomore year and be a front-line (entry-level) position in the student s area of interest. The second internship should be accomplished during the third summer or end of the Junior year. This preferably will be a supervisory/managerial level experience in the student s area of interest. SIX-MONTH INTERNSHIP The six-month internship (full 800 hours) is completed from May through January prior to Spring semester or January through August prior to the fall semester. A six-month internship is more detailed; a student should be seeking an internship with an organization where they want to begin their career. The internship could be a Management in Training, or other structured management program offered by the employer. Approval of this internship is contingent on a structured training program. Note: All interns will be evaluated by their supervisor after the completion of the internship. Process for Approval of Internship 1. The student is responsible for discussing arrangements of the internship with the internship coordinator, and should obtain a job description to present to the internship coordinator. 2. After the internship has been approved, the student will need to have the Internship Agreement completed. This should be done with the employer and be given to the internship coordinator for signature. A signed, approved copy will be forwarded to both the employer and the student and put in the student file. 3. The Internship Agreement must be on file prior to the first day of the internship for credit approval.

3 Intern Responsibilities Your internship fulfills Field Experience requirements for the HTA degree. A journal (preferably weekly) in which you record and reflect upon your experiences should be kept (does not apply to students registered for summer). Responsibilities of the Intern The intern is responsible for the following primary objectives: Internship selection. The internship should enhance your abilities, skills, and knowledge of the type of career in which you are interested; something that will build your resume and prepare you for your future in the industry. You need to obtain a job description to share with the internship coordinator to seek advice, counseling and approval for your internship. When possible, begin this process in the fall semester before your first summer internship. Internship approval. After you have met the with internship coordinator and your internship is approved, you and your internship supervisor will complete the Internship Agreement document. This document is then presented to the internship coordinator for signature. Once the internship agreement is signed by all parties, one signed copy will be forwarded to the employer, and one will be put in the student s file. The internship agreement must be on file prior to the first day of your internship. Internship completion. Once approved, you may begin your internship. This includes performing the contracted job for the employer and writing in a weekly journal. Refer to the Journal Guidelines section for potential journal topics. The employer evaluation located at the end of this packet must be submitted to your advisor at the end of your internship. The evaluation form will then be placed in your academic file. Internship registration. Students must request permission from the internship coordinator to register for HTA 371, regardless of whether choosing summer or 6-month internships. The HTA 371 course will encourage you to evaluate and reflect upon your experience. You will be asked to complete a series of reflection papers related to issues, topics, episodes, abilities, skills and knowledge obtained during your internship experience. Note: Your journal and evaluation are required on the second day of class for 371.

4 Journal Guidelines (optional for summer interns) Your weekly journal is an important tool, allowing you to think critically, particularly within the context of the industry. The following topics should be considered for your journal entries. 1. Summarize why you chose to work for this company. 2. Describe the corporate culture. 3. Describe any work performed that was related to experiences or studies you had in college. 4. Describe assets, values, or traits you possess that fit into your internship. 5. Analyze or synthesize personal satisfaction and/or dissatisfaction you had in connection to your internship. 6. List all positions you held. 7. Judge or assess the company s future, as well as your future within the company. 8. Evaluate the organization s cultural diversity. 9. Evaluate the atmosphere where you did your internship, and your coworkers. 10. Appraise advancement opportunities or other personal progress you made. 11. Describe some stressful moments/events and their effect on you personally. 12. Identify or evaluate styles of management that were used. 13. Recognize and explain new skills have you acquired. What skills were reinforced during your internship?

6 Employer Responsibilities The internship supervisor is responsible for ensuring the following: The employer will adequately train and orient the student interns in their position according to the job description provided for internship approval. The employer agrees to employ, schedule, and pay the student intern as agreed and hold the student intern responsible for their position. The employer agrees to inform the student intern in advance of any required overtime hours and compensate the intern in accordance with the governing laws and regulations, and policies, and procedures of the organization regulating overtime. The student intern must be placed under the direct supervisor, named in the internship agreement, so the student s progress can be monitored; and counsel, advice, and suggestions may be given to the student intern for improving their work. If the student intern does not perform in accordance with the policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of the organization and has been given the necessary opportunities to improve, the employer may terminate the internship agreement. However, all documentation for said termination must be sent to the internship coordinator. The student intern is given the opportunity and given assistance in completing the competencies provided by the advisor to the direct supervisor to enhance their internship experience. When the organization and/or the direct supervisor believe the student intern is qualified, provide them with diversified assignments which will give them a breadth and depth of experiences. When the organization and/or the direct supervisor believes the student intern is qualified, will provide the student intern with an opportunity to act in a supervisory role. The organization will invite the student intern to attend meetings and training sessions. The organization and/or the direct supervisor, by signing the internship agreement, agrees to the above employer responsibilities.
