Chancellor s Schedule Week of February 19 Monday President s Holiday Tuesday Wednesday In the District Thursday Friday ACCCA Conference District Receives Mental Health Services Grant This week, District staff were informed that the California Community Colleges Chancellor s Office awarded CCCD $350,000 for our application to the California Community College Mental Health Services grant. This was a highly competitive application process. The grant provides much needed funding for the District Mental Health Impact Program to establish mental health services at Coastline, expand and enhance the mental health services at Golden West and Orange Coast, and implement new technology, training, and outreach at the three colleges. The preparation of the grant application was a collaborative effort among the three colleges and the District. Dr. Andreea Serban, Vice Chancellor of Educational Services & Technology, would like to thank and congratulate Lisa Thai, District Director, Grants and Educational Services; Kelly Daly and Lawrence Valentine, OCC; Dr. Alex Miranda and Dr. Judy Cheng, GWC; and Dr. Aeron Zentner, Coastline for their work to prepare this successful grant application. 2 Board In Action Board Clerk Jim Moreno, Trustee Jerry Patterson, and Chancellor John Weispfenning attended the ACCT National Legislative Summit this week to advocate in Washington, DC with more than 1,000 other community college leaders from across the nation. This event shines a spotlight on the importance of community colleges for Congress and for the Administration. The National Legislative Summit is designed to inform and educate community college leaders on federal policy issues that affect postsecondary institutions and students. Attendees of the conference had the opportunity to hear from members of Congress, leading political analysts, and other high profile speakers about the climate in D.C., recent elections, and legislative issues impacting community colleges. 3 Coastline Welcomes International Students In January, Coastline welcomed new international students for the Spring 2018 semester at the International Student Program Orientation. Students from Vietnam, Egypt, Philippines, Brazil, and Japan were welcomed by Christine Nguyen, Vice President of Administration Services, Kate Mueller, Vice President of Student Services, and Bruce Keeler, Dean of Counseling. Students were also welcomed by Coastline s Academic success coaches who will help guide them as they begin their educational journey at the college. Students also learned about other valuable resources from presentations given by the International Student Program advisor, Javier Alcala, Paolo Varquez, Career Services Coordinator, and Rachelle Lopez, counselor. Javier presented F-1 (international student visa) regulations, online course limitations, maintaining status, DMV, Social Security, and health insurance. Paolo presented and discussed best practices for finding the right major and careers after graduation. Rachelle, extensively covered services provided by the Counseling Department as well as regulations regarding international students, academic counseling, and success. Thank you to Brenda Ponce and the entire Admissions and Records staff and Farah Naama, Student assistant for International Student Program for all your help with the orientation. International students must hold F-1 Visas and are required to enroll and complete 12 or more units each semester. Golden West College Named 2018 Best of Huntington Beach By HB Chamber of Commerce Golden West College was honored with the 2018 Best of HB award by the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce. GWC President Wes Bryan thanked the chamber for the honor at its annual Best of HB Awards Dinner January 25 at The Venue by Three Petals in Huntington Beach. James O Callaghan, President and CEO of the HB Chamber, presented the award to Bryan. The Huntington Beach Chamber is delighted to honor Golden West College with this year s Best of HB Award. The College has become an integral part of the planning and development phase for not only our business community but Huntington Beach as a whole. Having a partner such as Golden West ensures we are preparing the workforce of the future to meet the needs of the changing business environment.

4 OCC 70 th Anniversary Kicks Off With Unveiling of Special Website Take a look back at OCC over the past seven decades, and learn how you can get involved in the festivities this year. Celebrating 70 Years Orange Coast Junior College district was established in 1947, with classes beginning in For more than 70 years, OCC has been a leader in higher education in Costa Mesa and its surrounding communities. As one of the nation s top transfer schools, and with a robust offering of career and technical education programs, OCC prides itself on giving students the tools they need to succeed in today s world. Throughout 2018, OCC will be sharing Coast Stories about the many ways that our College has impacted the lives of those in our community and around the world. To participate in the festivities, submit your story below. Throughout this year, as we prepare to celebrate our 70th graduating class, OCC also will host several events honoring the legacy of excellence that has distinguished our College as one of the nation s best. This week, the nation experienced an unspeakable tragedy that has unfortunately become all too familiar. The fatal shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida took the lives of 17, leaving family members, friends, and an entire community in a state of mourning. This incident reaffirms that the safety of our students is a top priority. When we witness violence in communities, particularly against students, it prompts us to pause and reflect on the safety measures we have in place. It also reminds us of how important it is to invest in preparation for emergencies and the need to strengthen trust with students. We are grateful for our campus safety officers and partnerships with local police departments and the county sheriff s department. Our local law enforcement resources help us to remain diligent and in tune with individuals who may be in distress, so we can prevent violence and respond appropriately to any threats.
