2 Spirit Intellect Purpose January 2012 The Career Development Center is pleased to present Career Destinations Saint Joseph s University Class of 2011, our annual report of the postgraduate activities of this year s graduates. Data contained in the report was obtained primarily through a Career Development Center survey of January, May and September graduates of Undergraduate Day, Professional and Liberal Studies and Graduate divisions of the university. Each graduate was contacted at least three times between July 2011 and December 2011 through and/or telephone. Information was also gathered through the Career Development Center s recruiting program and through university faculty and administrators. 3 CAREER DESTINATIONS SAINT JOSEPH S UNIVERSITY CLASS OF 2011 Compiled by the Career Development Center January 2012 THE 2011 UNDERGRADUATE DAY REPORT Information is based on 521 respondents, 60% of the graduating class. 93% of the respondents are employed and/or pursuing additional education. Saint Joseph s University Class of 2011 includes recipients of some of the world s most competitive and prestigious academic awards; among them are two recipients of Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships and winners of a Barry J. Goldwater scholarship in the sciences and a St. Andrew s Society scholarship to Edinburgh. Post-graduate year-of-service programs continue to attract SJU graduates in impressive numbers. Twenty one graduates (4% of respondents) are involved in fulltime volunteer and service programs, such as Alliance for Catholic Education, Augustinian Volunteer Corps, Cristo Rey Network, Jesuit Volunteer Corps, Peace Corps, Teach for America and World Teach South Africa. Graduates who started looking for a job prior to graduation and who utilized the services of the Career Development Center in their search had an average total salary of $46,300 (average base salary of $42,800; average bonus of $3,500). Graduates who found their jobs through the Career Development Center s on-campus interviewing program had an average total salary of $52,900 (average base salary of $50,100; average bonus of $2,800). Graduates who reported that they began looking for a job after graduation had an average total salary of $44,800 (average base salary of $41,400; average bonus of $3,400). The average total starting salary for the class of 2011 was $43,000, with an average base salary of $41,400 and an average bonus of $1,600. The average total starting salary for the class of 2010 was $42,500. Nearly 95% of graduates reported having participated in at least one semesterlong experiential education program; such programs include internships, cooperative education, part-time jobs resulting in the acquisition of transferable skills, service-based commitments, and study abroad. Graduates who reported completing at least one internship prior to graduation had an average salary of $43,100. Graduates who had no internship experience had an average salary of $35,200. The post-graduation status of the undergraduate day class of 2011, along with the previous four years graduating classes, is represented in the table below. Those fields attracting the highest number of graduates include Consumer Products/Retail, Accounting, Financial Services, and Education. The chart below shows the career field trends of SJU graduates over the last five years. 6 Saint Joseph s University On-Campus Recruiting Program The On-Campus Recruiting Program at Saint Joseph s University utilizes SJUcareers, an online system, to connect students with employers. Interviews take place in the Career Development Center and, as shown in the table below, an increasing number of students have taken advantage of the program by interviewing on campus. In fact, over the past five academic years, the number of interviews conducted on campus has increased by 128%. 8 Fellowship, Scholarship and Grant Information Class of 2011 With the assistance of the Office of Fellowships, Saint Joseph s University s class of 2011 includes recipients of competitive and prestigious academic awards, including Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships to Indonesia and Guatemala, the Barry J. Goldwater Scholarship in the sciences, the St. Andrew s Society Scholarship to Edinburgh; as well as acceptance into the Peace Corps, with placement in the Ukraine, and into Teach for America. Graduates of the class of 2011 who went on to graduate study were awarded an average of $42,100 in scholarship or grant funding. Awards ranged from $2,000 to $400,000, with many graduates receiving grants for full tuition with room and board included. Over 44% of the graduates enrolled in continuing education were awarded some type of funding for graduate study, with awards totaling over $1 million. Of those not currently continuing their education, 315 graduates reported future plans for academic study. 57% indicated they planned to continue their education within 1-2 years, 32% within 3-4 years, and 11% in 5 or more years. 7

9 THE 2011 PROFESSIONAL AND LIBERAL STUDIES REPORT The following includes highlights of significant findings from the survey of 2011 Professional and Liberal Studies graduates. Information is based on 32 graduates, 22% of the graduating class. 94% of the respondents are employed and/or pursuing additional education (78% employed, 16% continuing education). The average total salary for the Professional and Liberal Studies graduates of 2011 was $61,300 (average base salary of $59,500; average bonus of $1,800). The average total salary for Business majors was $48,900 (average base salary of $46,400; average bonus of $2,500), while the average total salary for Liberal Arts & Science majors $65,600 (average base salary of $64,000; average bonus of $1,000). 10 Career-Related Improvements Attributed to Attainment of Bachelor s Degree Promotion 11% Salary Increase 11% Title Change 11% Added Responsibilities 22% Forty-one percent of Professional and Liberal Studies graduates who are employed remained with their current employer after graduation. Many of these graduates experienced career enhancements such as promotions, salary increases, title changes and added responsibilities. The table above depicts the type of career-related improvements the graduates earned as a result of attaining a Bachelor s degree. In addition, 19% of those who indicated they were employed are also continuing their education on a full- or part-time basis. 9

11 THE 2011 GRADUATE PROGRAMS REPORT The following includes highlights of significant findings from the survey of 2011 graduates of SJU s graduate degree programs. Information is based on 242 graduates, 24% of the graduating class. 92% of the respondents are employed and/or pursuing additional education. Those seeking employment totaled 8%. The average total salary for graduate degree program graduates of 2011 was $73,100 (average base salary of $65,800; average bonus of $7,300); this reflects a $1,600 decrease in total salary from The average salary for graduates of Graduate Business programs was $91,000 (average base salary of $82,000, up $7,700 from 2010; average bonus of $9,000). For graduates of Graduate Arts & Science programs, the average total salary was $61,600 (average base salary of $56,100; average bonus of $5,500). The majority of graduates of graduate degree programs (83%) reported working full-time. A wide variety of industries were represented, with the most common being: Education (26%) Pharmaceuticals (7%) Health/Medicine/Biotech (12%) Science and Technology (7%) Financial Services (10%) 10
