My strategic contribution to the broader discourse is meant to add further clarification as to how social justice ethics might manifest in educational practice. (national consultant) California Community Colleges Professional Learning Network (statewide trainer) Member of the American Educational Research Association RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE Center Director, LearningWorks -Foundation for the California Community Colleges LearningWorks aims to strengthen student achievement in the California community colleges (CCCs). It does so by facilitating, disseminating, and funding practitioner-informed recommendations for changes at the system and classroom levels, and infusing these strategies with statewide and national insights. The Center Director works with the Executive Director to manage a $2.2 million budget and oversee the grant disbursement of an annual $700,000 portfolio to support community colleges and their efforts to improve completion rates Co-Principal, June Jordan School for Equity Assists Co-Director in the general administration of the school and serves as sole Principal in Co-director s absence. In addition to typical administrative tasks, this position is responsible for maintaining the highest standard of integrity and creating a safe space for all community members on campus. This position requires consistent communication with district offices of pupil services, athletics, after school programs, and health and wellness to deliver the most engaging environment possible for students and families. 6

7 2004 Co-Director, Camp Akili Serve as Co-Director for an academic enrichment summer camp for 84 high school students. Responsibilities included supervision of 20 support staff and instructors. Responsibility included the oversight of camp budget and daily as well as all camp programming and classes. Students were recruited from all areas of the state and staff were recruited from all over the nation SB65 Dropout Prevention Coordinator, Oakland Technical High School Met with 35 students and their families to intervene in potential dropout situations; connect students to resources; work with school staff to develop intervention strategies; establishing a network of on-campus resources for students and attending the monthly School Site Council meetings on campus.. Additional Instructional Experience Founder/ Executive Director, Trying to Uplift My Folks Trying to Uplift My Folks (TryUMF) was a program designed to address the academic and social problems that urban high school students face on a daily basis. The program was set as an elective course in the regular school day at Oakland Technical High School in Oakland, CA. Students were taught complex social theory, feminist theory, diversity training, conflict-resolution and character development five hours a week which resulted in the highest four- year college acceptance rates of any non-profit youth development program in the city Instructor, New College of California Serve as adjunct instructor to undergraduate and graduate students in issues of social and institutional transformation. Emphasis is on real life application of classical and contemporary theory from the disciplines of political science, sociology, labor studies, and leadership studies Instructor, Sonoma State University-Pre College Programs Course: Social Science- Cultural Perspectives and Critical Analysis Preparing young students of color (predominantly Latino) for college-level work and reading material. Students are exposed to issues in identity politics and diversity through the study of cultural histories Instructor, Alameda County Read For Life Served as facilitator for the Personal Responsibility workshop series for inmates at the Alameda County Jail, Santa Rita facility. My responsibility as one of 10 instructors was to instruct men located in the maximum-security unit through personal development curriculum and challenging lifework assignments that were based in literacy and self-examination Lead Instructor, Coalition of Alamedians for Racial Equality (C.A.R.E.) 7

8 Implemented a diversity awareness curriculum to an annual group of 60 selected high school students in the Alameda Unified School District. Responsibilities included guiding students through critical awareness surrounding the racism, sexism, and homophobia that surrounds them, as well as how to challenge these negative dynamics in their community. 8
