5 MARPLE SIXTH FORM COLLEGE PROSPECTUS WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TROUBLE TO READ OUR NEW PROSPECTUS. I HOPE THAT YOU WILL FIND IT USEFUL AS YOU TRY TO DECIDE WHICH ROUTE TO TAKE WITH YOUR POST-16 EDUCATION. I know the decisions that our young people are faced with are ever more challenging and I understand fully the significance of the decision that you are about to make regarding where to continue your studies beyond the age of 16. However, I am confident that, with its exciting re-development complete. Marple Sixth Form College can offer you an experience that will set you on your way to success. At Marple Sixth Form College we pride ourselves on being an inclusive college where all students are treated equally and with respect, and where everyone contributes to a progressive and positive learning environment. We believe that students who enjoy their learning are more likely to succeed and we therefore create an environment where challenge and support combine to bring the best out of our learners. As you will see later in this prospectus, we offer a wide range of courses, A levels, BTECs, Diplomas and Apprenticeships, all of which will challenge you to realise your full potential. Combine this curriculum offer with an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities such as sporting clubs, student societies and work placement opportunities and it is clear that when you leave us you will be well prepared for higher education or employment. So, if your next decision is to progress to university, take further training towards a specific career, go straight into work, or even start your own business, we will be there with you, challenging and supporting. This prospectus explains how we can help you make the right decisions for you but if you want to see first-hand how we support, encourage and challenge our students, why not come to one of our open events on 15th October or 10th November? You will be able to meet teachers and current students, explore the re-developed campus and get all of the information you need to make your decisions. I look forward to meeting you. Jenny Singleton Principal and CEO PAGE 05

6 SO WHY DECIDE ON MARPLE SIXTH FORM COLLEGE? WE BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE KEY AREAS THAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON WHEN CHOOSING HOW, WHAT AND WHERE TO STUDY. YOUR PROGRAMME OF STUDY HOW YOU WILL BE SUPPORTED THE FACILITIES AVAILABLE TO YOU PLANNING FOR YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS AND RESULTS PAGE 06

7 HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON YOUR PROGRAMME OF STUDY? You will want to achieve the best results possible and we want the same for you. We will work with you to identify the right programme of study for you. This process begins with a one to one interview with one of our experienced interviewers. You will be asked to outline your hopes for the future, whether you intend to progress to university, into employment or onto an apprenticeship. You will have the opportunity to ask about life at the college and to tell us what your expectations are. At your interview the interviewer will explain about the study pathways that are available. There is more information about study pathways later in this prospectus. We find that some young people are uncertain about which courses to take and, if that is the case with you, why not list the things that you enjoy at school and the things that you are good at and where there is an overlap you have as good a starting point as any. After your interview we will keep in touch with you but you can contact us to ask any questions that you may have by info@cmcnet.ac.uk, via the internet or through It is always good to hear from you. We do recommend that you attend open events and have a good look around. You will be able to ask questions and speak to the students who will give you a good idea about what life at college is like. Our open events are on 15th October and 10th November and we would be delighted to see you there. PAGE 07

12 SETTLING IN We understand that the step up from school can be daunting as well as exciting and every student who joins us follows an induction programme at the start of the first term. HOW DO WE SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS? THE ONE TO ONE INTERVIEW IS REALLY THE START OF OUR JOURNEY TOGETHER AND IS PART OF OUR COMMITMENT TO WORK WITH YOU TO HELP YOU DO THE VERY BEST THAT YOU CAN. Your teachers are not called sir or miss at college, you call them by their first name. They will take time to get to know you and treat you as an individual. Our teachers are all experts in teaching the 16 to 18 age group and they will be with you on your journey, providing support and challenging you to fully realise your potential. You will also have your own Personal Tutor who is there to guide, support and listen. Your Personal Tutor is part of a House System that is your home within the college. All of our students have access to learning mentors, the college counsellor and careers advisors. STAYING IN TOUCH WITH PARENTS We work closely with parents and carers to make sure our students get the most out of their time with us. We keep in contact via regular progress reports, updates by and publish all of our latest news online. Parents can also access up to date information about their son or daughter s attendance and grades via the college intranet. OUR LEARNING SUPPORT PROVISION Marple Sixth Form College is committed to supporting the learning of all students and is an inclusive college. We therefore offer a comprehensive learning support programme which can help students learn effectively by addressing assessed, specific learning needs. FINANCIAL SUPPORT There are a number of schemes and funds on offer to support students who face financial challenges in pursuit of their studies. These include a Bursary Fund, which allows us to give government money directly to year old students who face economic barriers to continuing in full-time education. PAGE 012

16 HOW CAN WE HELP YOU PLAN YOUR FUTURE? We begin this process when you come for your interview and we continue it until you leave at the end of your programme of study. Marple Sixth Form College recognises that you need to be prepared for the world of work, even if you are considering going to university or into further training after completing your studies. We have therefore built excellent links with local employers and have a dedicated team of work experience co-ordinators to ensure that you get access to well-planned and meaningful work placements and employment-based opportunities that will support your application to Higher Education or directly into the workforce. We also have relationships with many of the UK s leading universities including Manchester, Sheffield, Oxford and Cambridge which will help you gain excellent insights into how universities work, what studying for a degree is like and what universities look for when offering undergraduate places. We believe that this mix of academic study, vocational options, employer and university partnerships, extracurricular activities and active participation in college life gives you a real advantage when it comes to competing for places at university, competitive Higher Apprenticeships, or jobs. HOW GOOD ARE OUR RESULTS? Of course we are well aware that colleges are only as good as the results that their students obtain. Here at Marple Sixth Form College we are very proud of the achievements of our students. The A level pass rate was 99% with 68% of the grades achieved being A* to C. The BTEC pass rate was 100% with 85% high grades. Well done to the class of 2016!

22 HOW CAN YOU ENRICH YOUR TIME AT COLLEGE? One of the joys of working in a sixth form college is to able to watch young people developing new skills, making new friends and broadening their horizons. The richness of our community comes from our students and the enthusiasm and imagination that they bring with them. If you have a hobby or interest then there will be somebody else at college who shares it. You will find like minds and make friendships that will last a lifetime. Marple Sixth Form College arranges regular field trips to visit cultural institutions, large corporations, businesses and key public sector organisations, both locally and nationally. There are also opportunities for foreign travel. These complement our courses and help inform our students learning and career choices when they complete their studies. Many of our courses provide students with the opportunity to gain additional qualifications which will enhance their future prospects. We also have a wide range of sports clubs and community activities which encourage students to take more personal responsibility and develop additional skills and qualities outside of college. PAGE 022 The college is also embedded in its local community and strives to be a good neighbour. Students and staff regularly get involved in charity initiatives which benefit local causes.

When you join Marple Sixth Form College you will be enrolled in one of three college houses; Willows House, Woodville House, or Ridge House. Your Personal Tutor sits within the House System and is your link to the Head of House and the support network that the college provides. Your Head of House will be on hand to give you advice and guidance, and make sure you stay on track to achieve your aims. You will also enjoy the support of the other students within your House through lots of peer-to-peer activities.
