6 Federal Initiatives Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships launched 2008 internationally competitive and highly prestigious, similar to U.S. Fulbright, Australian Monash and U.K. Rhodes Scholarships C$50,000 per year for up to three years 165 scholarships per year will be awarded, 55 per council CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada) Federal Initiatives The Understanding Canada Program established 2008 to fund research for a better understanding of Canadian society and/or culture funding available for projects in the Social Sciences and Humanities supports teaching, research, publications, institutional linkages and student mobility supports 26 Canadian Studies Associations and three regional networks (Europe, Latino-American, Australasia-Pacific) 6

7 Federal Initiatives Working Holiday Program Australian passport holders aged work in Canada for up to two years repeat participation (up until turn 31) study for up to six months without study permit no quota (13,381 participants in 2008) Federal Initiatives Citizenship and Immigration Canada Post Graduate Work Experience Program (2008) international students who have completed an eight month to two year program at an eligible institution can work for a period up to the length of time that was studied international students who have completed more than 2 years of a post secondary program at an eligible institution can: work up to three years anywhere in Canada receive an open work permit without an existing job offer Canadian Experience Class (2007) allows an applicant s education and work experience in Canada to be considered a key selection factor when immigrating to Canada international students who have completed the Post Graduate Work Experience Program, that involved at least one year of full-time, skilled work experience are eligible for consideration for permanent residency 7

8 Provincial Initiatives British Columbia British Columbia Council for International Education given new mandate, backed by funding from two provincial ministries, to represent the Province s various players under one umbrella Manitoba Five-year international education strategy launched Quebec Discover the Difference campaign launched in Paris Languages Canada launched in March 2008, with endorsement from the Canadian government incorporates former Canada Language Council and the Canadian Association of Private Language Schools (CAPLS) represents the $1.5 billion Canadian language training industry, both public and private, in both of Canada's official languages internationally recognized quality assurance scheme: curriculum and teacher qualifications student services and student admissions marketing, promotion, facilities and administration 8
