An Homage to Patrick T. Terenzini, Distinguished Scholar and Friend LISA R. LATTUCA, ROBERT D. REASON (IN SPIRIT), AND FRIENDS APRIL 16, 2010 CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF HIGHER EDUCATION THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY
So, I guess the nerdy little guy with the Van Dyke beard turned out a whole lot better than I thought when I first met him in Syracuse in 1970! Ernest T. Pascarella Professor and Mary Louise Petersen Chair in Higher Education University of Iowa
So, I guess the nerdy little guy with the Van Dyke beard turned out a whole lot better than I thought when I first met him in Syracuse in 1970! Ernest T. Pascarella Professor and Mary Louise Petersen Chair in Higher Education University of Iowa
It is clear to me that Pat Terenzini s career has significantly advanced the field of higher education study through extraordinary scholarship, leadership and service. Joan S. Stark, Professor Emerita and Dean Emerita University of Michigan
The Study of College Effects Challenged the scholarly community to conduct more conceptually and methodologically sophisticated studies. Provided the conceptual grounding of the many studies carried out through the National Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment Profoundly influenced how scholars conduct research on student outcomes. In its latest iteration, Pat s model (with R. Reason) has been adapted for use in studies at Penn State and elsewhere.
His career has significantly enhanced our knowledge and understanding of the college student experience. During the late 1970s and 1980s, his scholarship focused on testing Tinto s theory of colleges student departure and set the standard in this area for careful research With Ernest Pascarella, Dr. Terenzini developed measures of Tinto s constructs that continue to serve the scholarly community. John M. Braxton Professor of Education Vanderbilt University
How College Affects Students 1991 & 2005 ONE OF 100 CLASSIC BOOKS ABOUT HIGHER EDUCATION, PUBLISHED BY PHI DELTA KAPPA INTERNATIONAL This review of research has probably had more direct impact on how colleges and universities have approached undergraduate education than any other single work of the last 100 years. It is not only a monument to the diligence of the authors, but represents extraordinarily insightful assessment of a massive body of research. David Leslie Professor of Education Emeritus College of William and Mary
The 1991 forerunner to the 2005 volume was, simply put, the best book on the impact of college on students written at that point in time. If anything, the later book is even better, because it examines in greater detail the conditional and compensatory effects certain teaching approaches and other interventions have on learning and personal development of historically underserved students. These are thorough, penetrating, insightful presentations rich with implications for scholars and practitioners. George D. Kuh Chancellor's Professor of Higher Education and Director, Center for Postsecondary Research Indiana University
But there is so much more to Pat than these volumes. His "other" contributions are voluminous and of uniformly excellent quality. When I see an article with his imprint, I make certain to read it because I know it will be excellent. As voluminous as his contributions are, it is the uniform excellence that is their lasting imprint. John Smart Editor, Research in Higher Education Professor of Education University of Memphis
Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) Research Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to research Article of the Year Award (with E. Pascarella, E. Whitt, A. Nora, M. ACPA Senior Scholar, and later, Diplomate Inaugural Sphere of Influence Award, jointly awarded once every 10 years, from ACPA and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). The Terenzini Magic 8-Ball Award The answer: It depends.
Student Outcomes and the Policy Arena As President of the Association for the Study of Higher Education ( ), initiated the development of the ASHE Public Policy Forum Challenged policy makers to think beyond access and financial aid and to include student learning as a critical policy concern Brought policy questions and concerns to the attention of researchers studying college student outcomes Student outcomes information for policy-making, published by the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative Working Group of US Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics
A Champion for Assessment In the 1970s, before student learning outcomes assessment became popular, Pat developed a comprehensive system of institutional wide assessment when he was director of institutional research at SUNY- Albany. That framework continues to operate today, serving as a model for other institutions finally grappling with the challenges of assessing student learning and institutional effectiveness. George Kuh
Contributions to Institutional Research The longest-serving editor of the New Directions for Institutional Research monograph series Author of the widely admired and widely cited article, Assessment with Open Eyes Chaired search for the new editor of Research in Higher Education, AIR s research journal and one of the fields premier scholarly journals Winner of the Outstanding Service Awards by both the national organization (AIR) and Northeast AIR.
Accolades from the IR world Forum Best Paper Award (lead author, with T. M. Wright), Association for Institutional Research, for paper presented at the 1986 Forum. Forum Best Paper Award (lead author, with E. T. Pascarella), Association for Institutional Research, for paper presented at the 1990 Forum. Forum Best Paper Award (lead author, with L. Springer, P. Yaeger, E. Pascarella, & A. Nora), Association for Institutional Research, for paper presented at the 1995 Forum. Sidney Suslow Award, Association for Institutional Research, for "significant, original contributions to research and scholarship in institutional research and administrative decision making." (1987)
Grounded in the field of institutional research, Pat is widely respected and admiringly known for his extensive studies of student retention, institutional research and planning, the assessment of student learning outcomes, the impact of college on students, the freshman year experience, educational attainment, first-generation students, and engineering education. His Three Tiers of Organizational Intelligence has been one of the most widely cited concepts at institutional research meetings over the past two decades. J. Fredericks Volkwein, Professor of Higher Education The Pennsylvania State University
American Association for Higher Education, the American College Personnel Association, and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Joint Task Force on Student Learning, American Council on Education, National Advisory Board on the Cooperative Institutional Research Program American Council on Education, Center for Policy Analysis Association of American Colleges and Universities, Consortium for the Advancement of Private Higher Education (CAPHE) National Council for Community and Education Partnerships and GEAR UP Evaluation Council Outstanding Service to the Field 15 years as Associate Editor of the Higher Education: Handbook of Theory and Research Editorial boards Research in Higher Education (since 1978) Review of Higher Education (1978 to 1987) ACPA s About Campus (1995 to 2000) National Resource Center for The First- Year Experience and Students in Transition National Study of Student Engagement Policy Center on the First Year of College
His critiques consistently exhibit deep thought and reflection, genuine respect for authors, substantive and methodological intellectual insights, and an abiding interest in implications for other scholars and practitioners. While known primarily for his expertise in research of how college affects students, I have found him to be equally adept in judging the merits of manuscripts on most any major line of inquiry in the field of higher education. He is a "man for all seasons" and I can send him any manuscript with absolute confidence of receiving an informed and insightful critique. This is a rare talent from which the journal and authors have benefitted for the past two decades and a "hidden contribution" of his impact of advancing higher education scholarship. John Smart
Improving Engineering Education William Elgin Wickenden Award (lead author, with A. F. Cabrera, C. L. Colbeck, J. M. Parente, & S. A. Bjorklund), from the American Society for Engineering Education, for the best paper published in the Journal of Engineering Education in Co-Principal Investigator for the Engineering Change study a national study of the impact of engineering accreditation on student learning Vice Chair, Working Group on Engineering Education Research, for the national report, Creating a Culture for Scholarly and Systematic Innovation in Engineering Education, of the American Society for Engineering Education Member, Advisory Board, Journal of Engineering Education
And at home Distinguished Professor, College of Education, Pennsylvania State University (2004) Career Achievement Award, College of Education, Pennsylvania State University ( )
A True Mentor A man of great generosity who always has time for young scholars, graduate students, and colleagues A model of intellectual curiosity and intellectual humility Always a teacher, and a teacher in all ways
Pat is not at all what I expected him to be, and I mean that in the best way and as the highest compliment to his dedication to higher education and mentorship. Before getting to know him, I assumed that like most famous scholars, Dr. Terenzini would be busy and often away from the office, a distant figure everyone knew of and respected, but rarely saw. Much to my surprise, Pat is not that way at all. The best way that I can describe Pat is to say that he is always so very present. It is rare that more than a few days go by before I bump into him in the hallways, join him and a group of students and colleagues for lunch, or see him at a meeting. He always greets me, and everyone else for that matter, with a cheerful smile and inquiry about how you are doing and how your work is coming. Pat s inquiries are genuine, and when he talks with you, you know that he is really present in that moment with you and cares about what you have to say. Kimberly Griffin Assistant Professor of Higher Education The Pennsylvania State University
Not too long ago, I met a new colleague who said she had read all the stuff you ve written with Pat Terenzini, which she quickly followed up with I thought you d be older. After removing her foot from her mouth, she explained what she meant and it speaks to Pat s ongoing mentorship of me and several other young colleagues. I m better for having worked closely with Pat over the last several years a better researcher, a better scholar, and a better mentor. Pat models excellence in these behaviors and challenges those of us around him to strive to be their best. I am better than I should be right now because of Pat. Robert Reason Associate Professor of Higher Education Penn State
Patrick is at the top of my list of colleagues whom I consider a superb role model. Without exception, he interacts with everyone with great respect and kindness. He listens carefully, responds not only with knowledge but also with wisdom and compassion, and links practicality with vision. He is always modest and unassuming. He models what it means to work hard, but he also models what it means to work at something you love. He has shown what excellent collaborations look like and how to carry them out over long periods of time. I have always felt that he models what a life of balance looks like serious commitment to work combined with equal commitment to his family and friends and a healthy sense of fun. Ann E. Austin Professor of Education Michigan State University
His name is synonymous with excellence. George Kuh All of us who have worked and known Pat over the years of his career are so fortunate to have a colleague who lives a life of such integrity and commitment. Ann Austin
I think of him as one of the pillars of ASHE, both for his engagement as an active member and as a role model for all scholars of higher education. David Leslie I wish I could be there to join in the justly deserved celebration of Pat Terenzini, an exemplary scholar and even better human being. John Smart
Pat unequivocally counts among a very small handful of distinguished individuals whose scholarly and empirical work will have a lasting impact on our field. He is a genuine national treasure in our profession, and having him as a colleague, as well as my best friend, has been one of the great joys of my life. Well done my friend, well done indeed!! Ernie Pascarella
Well done, our friend. Well done.
