1 Courses The following contains a description of the course we offer to students at St Marys Senior High. It is intended as a guide to help you select your subjects and you should read it carefully. Please note: The details given represent the way that the course is delivered at St Marys Senior High and may involve different choices from the way other schools might operate the same course. Classes can only be formed where sufficient students select the particular course. The fact that a course is listed here is not a commitment to run the course in a particular year. The arrangements for particular courses are subject to change for a variety of reasons. HSC students may elect to take extension courses which we offer in English, French, History, Japanese, and Music. It is important that students choose the correct course from the start of Year 11. This is to avoid the problems of missing work and tests. The deadline for changing Preliminary courses at St Marys Senior High School is the end of Term 1. The diagrams below are an attempt to suggest the kind of Stage 5 background a student needs for successful study in a given senior course. However, each student will need to carefully assess their own position and be honest about such matters as study and work commitment. 2 Standard - Course Details 2 with no restrictions Note: The Preliminary Standard course is undertaken by all students intending to study either the HSC Standard 2 course or the HSC Standard 1 course. The Department will NOT be offering the HSC Standard 1 course for study in Year 12. The Standard courses are focused on enabling students to use mathematics effectively, efficiently and critically to make informed decisions in their daily lives. They provide students with the opportunities to develop an understanding of, and competence in, further aspects of mathematics through a large variety of real-world applications for a range of concurrent HSC subjects. Standard 2 is designed for those students who want to extend their mathematical skills beyond Stage 5 but are not seeking the in-depth knowledge of higher mathematics that the study of calculus would provide. This course offers students the opportunity to prepare for a wide range of educational and employment aspirations, including continuing their studies at a tertiary level. The Year 11 course is organised in topics, with the topics divided into subtopics. The Year 11 course is undertaken by all students intending to study either the Standard 1 Year 12 course or the Standard 2 Year 12 course. Deal successfully and confidently with situations involving mathematics pply mathematical skills and techniques to interpret practical situations Be able to communicate mathematically in the written and/or verbal form Become aware of the usefulness of mathematics and appreciate the contribution of mathematics to our society Standard is fully prescribed and is designed to support TFE and other vocational courses. It provides an appropriate mathematical background for students who wish to undertake university study in the areas of business, humanities, nursing and paramedical science. However, this course does NOT prepare students for further studies in mathematics beyond the HSC. 4 Please note : The NEW SYLLBUS for this course will not be implemented until The (2 Unit) is intended to give students an understanding of and competence in some further aspects of mathematics which are applicable to the real world. It is a more formal, abstract course than General and is useful for concurrent studies in science and commerce. Note that calculus is covered in this course. high level of competence in in years 9 and 10 is required for this course. It is expected that only students who have studied Year 10 at the highest level and achieved a significant number of outcomes in the 5.3 course should attempt 2 Unit. It is also expected that a prerequisite for studying this course is a high level of competency in algebra. Preliminary course content Basic arithmetic and algebra, Real Functions, Trigonometric Ratios, Linear Functions, Quadratic Polynomial and the Parabola, Plane Geometry, Derivative of a Function. HSC course content Review of Year 11 Preliminary Course, Sequences and Series, Co-ordinate methods in Geometry, pplications of Geometrical properties, pplications of Differentiation, Integration, Trigonometric Function, Logarithmic and Exponential Functions, pplications of Calculus to the Physical World, Probability, Series pplications. What should I be able to do at the end of the course? Have confidence in their ability to do mathematics, demonstrating an independent and positive approach to mathematics Develop an awareness of the usefulness of mathematics in the community and appreciate the contribution of mathematics to our society Use appropriate logic, problem-solving and reasoning skills to analyse and solve a given problem. This course prepares students to matriculate for tertiary institutions. The (2 Unit) course provides the minimum basis for entry into tertiary courses requiring mathematics. Students intending to do tertiary studies should check prerequisites for specific courses. Students that have SMSHS - Page 4

5 acquired a very high level of competence in the 5.3 course in Years 9 and 10 and who require substantial mathematics at a tertiary level supporting the physical sciences, computer science or engineering should undertake the Extension 1 or Extension 2 courses. Extension 1 - Course Details 1 with no restrictions This 1 unit Extension course is undertaken while studying the (2 unit) course in both the Preliminary and HSC years (Years 11 and 12). The content of this course, which includes the entire (2 unit) course, and its depth of treatment indicate that it is intended only for students who have acquired a very high level of competence in the Year course. The course is intended to give these students a thorough understanding of and competence in aspects of mathematics including many of which are applicable to the real world. This course is useful for concurrent studies of science, engineering science and economics. Preliminary course content Preliminary (2 unit) Course Extension 1 Topics: Further inequalities, Circle Geometry, Further Trigonometry, ngles between 2 lines, Internal and External Division of Lines, Parametric Representation, Permutations and Combinations, Polynomials. HSC course content HSC (2 unit) Course More complex applications of (2 unit) topics Extension 1 Topics: Mathematical Induction, Methods of integration, Primitive of sin 2 x and cos 2 x, Equation dn/dt = k (N P), Velocity and cceleration, Projectile motion, Simple harmonic motion, Inverse Functions, Binomial Theorem, Further Probability, Polynomial Iterative Methods. The Extension 2 course includes the entire (2 unit) course, the entire Extension 1 course as well as several other major topics. This course is very demanding and is intended only for outstanding Preliminary Extension 1 students. It represents a distinctly high level of mathematics involving the development of considerable manipulative skills and a high degree of understanding of the fundamental ideas of algebra and calculus.
