1 THE UNCF/MELLON INTERNATIONAL FACULTY SEMINAR APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS We welcome your interest in applying to the UNCF/Mellon Faculty Seminar! The 2018 Mellon International Faculty Seminar Lisbon, Portugal; Malaga and Granada, Spain July 2-12, 2018 The African Diaspora in the Spanish-Speaking and Lusophone Worlds The UNCF/Mellon Faculty Career Enhancement Program is pleased to offer the 13th International Faculty Seminar focusing on the historic and contemporary African diasporic experience. Our July 2018 seminar will take us to the original sources and sites of the genesis of the transatlantic slave trade Portugal and Spain. The seminar will lift up the voices of the enslaved as we explore slave subjectivities in the Iberian World. The Seminar will query the pre-enslavement experience for Africans before the Transatlantic Slave Trade as we explore the history of Africans and Berbers from the establishment of the Umayyad Dynasty in al-andalus to Almoravids, Almohads, and Marinids and the presence of West and North Africans who lived in and controlled parts of Iberia. This examination will also excavate the Muslim influence throughout the Iberian Peninsula. A socio-historical analysis will require us to discuss the history of the African presence throughout the Iberian Peninsula, and to also interrogate the historical and contemporary impact of Portuguese colonization of various countries in Africa, including Angola, Mozambique and Guinea Bissau. As we examine the movement of people of African descent preenslavement to the present, we must examine the experiences of Africans in contemporary Portugal and Spain. The socio-political and cultural forces that frame these experiences will be engaged through an intersectional analysis that acknowledges how difference as constructed through race, gender and the global economy shapes and informs social and political realities. We began this journey in Dakar, Senegal (July 2002, July 2003, and July 2004) exploring the impact of the transatlantic slave trade and its many remnants and representations throughout the Francophone world. We next journeyed to Accra and Kumasi in Ghana in July 2005, July 2006, and July 2007 to explore the nature and consequences of the British engagement with the slave trade and the impact of British colonization of Ghana. While we understood the role of Portugal on the West Coast of Africa, we sought to travel to Cape Town (July 2008 and 2009) and Brazil (July 2011, July 2012, and July 2013) to gain better insights on the breadth and depth of Portuguese and Dutch influences upon African cultures, political structures and geopolitical agency. The most recent examination of the French empire upon the transatlantic slave trade and the establishment of French colonial territories (Nantes in 2015 and Paris in 2016) now leads us to our final stops in Europe - Portugal and Spain.

2 ELIGIBILITY The Mellon Faculty Seminars were conceived as enrichment opportunities for faculty who teach at the member colleges and universities of the United Negro College Fund. The Selection Committee invites applications from tenure-track and tenured faculty trained or teaching in Mellon disciplines and fields. The Mellon Faculty Seminars will be composed of both junior and senior scholars who hold faculty appointments at UNCF institutions. Preference will be given to junior faculty scholars whose teaching and scholarship can be enhanced by participation in this seminar. Faculty projects may contribute to scholarly knowledge in a discipline or field, or to the general public s understanding of scholarship in the academy. The work of recipients should result in publication, exhibition, curricular reform or some other concrete product. Like the Faculty Seminars, projects must be based in Mellon supported fields and disciplines. These fields and disciplines are: Anthropology and Archaeology Area/Cultural/Ethnic/Gender Studies Art History Classics Geography and Population Studies English Film, Cinema and Media Studies (theoretical focus) Musicology and Ethnomusicology Foreign Languages and Literatures History Linguistics Literature Performance Studies (theoretical focus) Philosophy and Political Theory Religion and Theology Sociology Theater (non-performance focus) Interdisciplinary Studies: Interdisciplinary areas of study may be eligible if they have one or more Mellon fields at their core THE AWARD The award covers the expenses associated with participation in the Mellon Faculty Seminar. The award includes the following for each seminar participant: One round trip ticket to/from Lisbon, and all associated travel expenses A private room and some meals during the period of the faculty seminar. Participants will be expected to cover the expenses of some of their meals as indicated on the seminar schedule. $ for a book allowance in order to purchase required reading materials for the seminar $ for a book allowance for course development and research If selected, faculty members are required to participate in all activities associated with the Mellon Faculty Seminar, including excursions to historical sites. In order to stimulate the dissemination and interrogation of themes and questions central to the Mellon Faculty Seminars, upon their return, seminar participants are required to present their Mellon supported research in colloquia and conferences.

3 APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Applications must be typed and must consist of the following materials. A completed application form A one-page abstract that summarizes the project s purpose, goals and objectives A one-page detailed description of the project that contains mention of the importance of the project to the applicant s disciplinary field of inquiry as well as the impact of the project upon pedagogy A full discussion of how the applicant's current teaching and/or scholarship related to the theme and content of the seminar (2 pages maximum) A curriculum vitae Two letters of recommendation A letter from the Provost or Dean of Faculty confirming the applicant s status as a tenure track or tenured member of the faculty Please note that all eligible applicants may be interviewed by the Selection Committee via telephone or Skype during the selection process. The Programs Office will contact all eligible applicants in advance to schedule the interviews. Applications are reviewed by an interdisciplinary committee of specialists and scholars. Abstracts and project descriptions should be written with the composition of the Selection Committee in mind.
