1 REDEFINING WOMEN S ROLE IN SOCITY THROGH HIGHER EDUCATION Gayatri C. Solanki 1, Dr. Amit Kumar Gupta 2 1 University Institute of Management and Commerce, Rani Durgawati University, (India) 2 Department of Management, Shriram Institute of Technology, (India) ABSTRACT Higher education provide to women that means independence in decision making. It would develop the capabilities and responsibilities in the field of social, economic, political and cultural areas. Higher education means whole development of personality. Higher education insured that you will have a better paying job. That will provide stability in life. It means self improvement, job insurance, a development of character and social improvement. It also make satisfy you. Women get higher education but is she at the higher position at the corporate level? After marriage she handles that house and not able to done their job. After becoming a mother her 3 years passing at home. The paper intends to highlight the impact of highly educated women having dual responsibility on their carrier and society.also focus of this paper is on implicit beliefs of women s role in society through National development not only fulfil by only women but it passes by them to her family.we highlight the aspects of highly educated women toward individual,social and national development. The study is based on secondary data available from website, newspaper and media. Keywords:- Women Higher Education,Gender Inequality,Women Participation, Higher Education, Higher Position. I. INTRODUCTION Ravindranath Tagore said-: The higher education is that which does not merely give us information,but makes life in harmony with all existence Higher education means the education beyond the level of secondary education. Education is the ladder through which development and growth can be achieved. India is third largest country in the world in higher education. After United state and China. In 2030 India will be youngest nation in the world.which has higher education system so early as compared to US and china. India has 46 consolidated central universities as on 20/05/ state universities, 129 deemed universities, 223 Private universities. Other institute 33,000 colleges as government degree colleges and private degree colleges, including 1800 exclusive women colleges. Large number of student get higher education through open universities too. Education is necessity for mind growth, spirit development, social development and it is also adapted by everyone.by education we explore value, good habit and awareness towards corruption, terrorism, disease and 97 P a g e
2 social problem. Higher education makes us to overcome from that above problem,capable to find out the solution of the problem. Government scheme as-: National literacy mission, aimed to attaining a literacy rate of 41% by Sarva shiksha abhiyan was lanched in 2001 to ensure that all children in the 6-14 year age group attend school. Rashtriya uchchtar shiksha abhiyan (R.U.S.A) aimed to providing funds to eligible state higher educational institutions. It provide opportunities of higher education to women. National mission for the empowerment of women (NMEW) launched by the Indian government this steps has some improvement in the 2011 census the ratio of female sex and female literacy both has increased. Government of India has been taken various steps and plans especially for women in every movement. Almost half of the population in India is occupied by women.it is very unfortunate to say that in India no socioeconomic opportunities for them. This neglecting attitude towards women is prominent in many areas particularly in the field of education. The impact of higher education of women on both traditional and modern participation of life. Traditional view supports women education to provide better wives and mother. Modern attitude refer to equality and development.since independence, there had been a growth in the number of women students in higher education but not more than men. women participation and empowerment have been an issue of deliberations all around the world. Men and women are just like the two wheels of a chariot. Than it is must necessary to provide them equal opportunity to grow up. In our country in rural area now women get secondary education but not higher education. It also can be see in city. Percentage of women higher education is less than men and that s why there are few women at higher position in corporate level. Women can play a very important role in the development of society and country. II. POSITION OF WOMEN IN HIGHER EDUCATION After independence the higher education institution and number of student both are increasing.in 1854 the east India company acknowledged women education and employment. Only well establish section of society took interest in this facility.in 1958, the government of India appointed a national committee for the women education.committee took a decision in favour of women education and it accepted by government of India. There is revolutionary change in India higher education system and women participation.it is great advancement that the presence of women in college and universities are growing.it is also found that in higher education institutions women are gaining entry without availing gender quota. This is undoubtedly credit for them.kerala is the only states in India that have achieved 100% universal female literacy rates and after that Lakshaydweep, Mizoram, Goa and Tripura have high literacy states. Education and employment is necessary for women empowerment and the governments needs to taking step for that. To improving higher education the world bank will give $300 million to the state government. According to minister for health and government spokesman Narotttam Mishra, the government has decided to contribute another $130 million for higher education project. The total funds for upgrading higher education institution and facilities in the state would be $430 million which is equivalent to Rs. 2,728 Crore. 98 P a g e
3 According to the Census report 2011, literacy growth of 9.2% but there is a wide gender disparity in the literacy rate in India.In 2011,the literacy rate recorded was 82.14% for men and 65.46% for women. The growth witnessed is steady till 2001 and stood at 83,99,000. In it stand at 1,69,75,000 a figure that has almost double in the lost decade. Enrolment of girls in 2001 it stood at 33,06,000 while in it reached 70,49,000.The information show girls enrolment increasing but what about the higher education? In enrolment in terms higher education 55.7% of men and 44.3% women. It shows gender disparity. Women percent are increased in the last 10 years. III. WOMEN HIGHER EDUCATION vs. HIGHER POSSITION Job opportunity available to women without an education that involve heavy labour. Job opportunities that means working in factories or industrial jobs but this is hazardous and less earning. opportunities to get jobs in other fields that require a degree.as above information women have higher education but is she at higher position. After getting higher education she started to doing a job but due to her duel responsibilities she take much time to reach at higher position instead of men.in India few of women at higher position compare to men. women ability to combine both management and family responsibilities being often questioned by senior male colleagues etc. as barriers to promotions. Mr. Anand Dewan SVP and head- business impact group, kotak life insurance blames factors like, Lack of support systems like day care for kids and also typical male paradigm that looks at women income as second income. corporate boardrooms are still largely men only environment with very few women able to break that final barriers. women largely employed in finance and human resource position. What more,34% of business around the world have no women in senior management at all. Indian working women obviously have the ability and the drive to reach the highest levels of professional achievement and sure we will see the surge continue. Many of the women who have higher education but do not job.her priority to take care of her family and children because of this she spend lots of career oriented years. So the women not at right position at right time. Every one should get education regardless of gender. Capabilities of girls are more than boys.in many areas girls are more intelligent than boys; It is scientifically proven that girls mature faster than boys. Than what is the reason that only few women at higher position.may be possible if number of women at higher position are increases something incredible will be discovered. Women support their families as well as she support nation too. She need to give opportunity and environment to handle her duel responsibilities.women are still largely under-represented at the executive level in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Unfortunately, there are still institutional barriers in today workplace that prevent women from holding high level executive positions. It difficult to understand how hard it can be for women to conjure their personal life with their professional ambitions, especially that time where working extra hours is become necessary. 99 P a g e
4 IV. SUGGESTION AND CONCLUSION There is a strong feeling that women themselves have the potential to restructure the position on higher education as well as higher position. There are few suggestion to comes innovation from Indian soil by involving and increasing participation of women s in higher education. India has limited high quality institute, the government have to start IITs and IIMs in small cities by that no need for female to go far from their native place to get higher education. The first step towards improvement is started at school with aptitude test to know where the interest of student( which includes boys and girls both) lies. Then encourage to join the field of interest. When we know our interest then it easy to go ahead and study it higher education level. Work on excellence with good facilities and infrastructure rather then increasing the number of higher education institute. The better institute charge higher fees even worse once would charge a higher fees for otherwise they would be considered bad by the virtue of charging a low fee. Never allowed the higher education institution to increase their fee.to Provide higher education to women at low fees facilities. Two third of our universities and 90% of colleges are bellow to the average in quality parameters. To improve standard and spending in higher education rather than increasing number of university. Give support to women to handle duel responsibility toward job and family by that she does not discontinue their job after marriage. Give facilities to women bring their children with them in organization by giving children home care facilities. Provide them scholarship for pursuing higher and technical education. Construct number of women hostels for college. To offer training programme focused on increasing sensitivity of women higher education. women take their own decisions by breaking all personal limitation of the society and family. Provide them female friendly environment in the organisation and industry. Elevate the role of women in developing country by improving higher education. Stop commercialization of education,the teachers attention is essentially focussed on teaching process not so much on their examination results. Empowering the women charity. Government of India spends on higher education is very low as compare to the requirements, it need to more effort. It is time now for another social revolution and redefine the role of women higher education in the country by removing gender inequalities and creating environment where women will be able to take confident steps toward higher position by higher education with support from university grants commission, the academicians management, government, top authorities as well as women student. 100 P a g e
