Institute Location: NMSU is a comprehensive land-grant institution of higher learning dedicated to teaching, research, and service at the undergraduate and graduate levels. NMSU is a NASA Space Grant College, a Hispanic-serving institution and is home to the only Honors College in New Mexico. APSI Office Information: The APSI office will be located in O'Donnell Hall Room 107. The APSI Office will be staffed Monday through Thursday 8:00am to 5:00pm and Friday 8:00am to 1:00pm. Classrooms: Sessions will be held in O'Donnell Hall, home of the College of Education and the Chemistry Building. You can visit: for the campus layout. 2 Daily Session Schedule: Please know there is NO registration process, the APSI sessions start on Monday at 10:00am in your respective classroom. General Lunch Session: A General Luncheon Session will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 12:00 noon at Presidio Parker located next to O'Donnell Hall. Dorm Information: NMSU has assigned housing for participants staying on campus to Piñón Residence Hall. Dorm check-in will be on Sunday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Piñón Residence Hall and Monday from 12:00noon to 8:00pm in the Garcia Hall Lobby. It is recommended that participants check in first and then unload any luggage and additional items. Dorm check-out is at 12:00noon on Friday at Piñón Residence Hall. Piñón Residence Hall is located on the NMSU North Campus where you will have easy access to the campus. Completed in 2006, Piñón Residence Hall is one of NMSU s newest residential facilities. Suites will be single occupancy per bedroom, and consist of two loft extra-long twin beds (one lowered and one in loft position) and share a common bathroom (total of two (2) same gender participants sharing the bathroom). To assist with visualization of the layout, please see attached floor plan. Bedding, which includes pillow, pillowcase, sheets, and light bedspread, is provided. TOWELS ARE NOT PROVIDED. You must bring your own towels and wash cloths. Individual Ethernet internet connections are located in the Residence Hall rooms; to utilize the internet you must bring an Ethernet cord. Your dorm room will be your home for the week and to make your stay more comfortable you may want to bring items such as the following: SMALL APPLIANCES Personal Laptop Alarm Clock Fan Desk Lamp Floor Lamp Stereo or radio Television (rooms are cable ready) Coffee Pot PERSONAL ITEMS LINENS Soap Shampoo Conditioner Shower Shoes Lotion Toothpaste Toothbrush Toothbrush Holder Personal Care Items Bath towels (must bring) Hand towels (must bring) Wash cloths (must bring) Personal Blankets and/or Sleeping Bag Provided are the following: Pillow Pillow Case Twin Extra Long Sheets Light Bedspread OTHER NEEDS Hangers Extension Cords Plastic/Paper Dishes and Utensils Plastic/Paper Cups Paper Towels Deodorizing Spray Flashlight Parking: Please take advantage of this opportunity. NMSU has a convenient service E-Permits. An E-Permit is a FREE parking permit that can be obtained over the internet. Occasional visitors to NMSU can obtain up to five (5) E-Permits each year. The free weekly visitor permit is a favorite and it allows parking in most spaces on campus, and best of all, it is FREE!
3 To obtain your permit for the APSI go to: Attached you will find a printout of the screen which shows the information needed for the permit. If you are unable to access this link, parking permits will be available Monday morning by contacting APSI personnel or assistants. Parking is controlled by the NMSU campus. We CANNOT fix parking citations. Handicapped parking is available for anyone with a state-issued placard. To enhance your educational experience, it is recommended that you bring a laptop computer, unless otherwise indicated not to below. Also please respect your lead consultants wishes if they ask you not to use them for certain activities. Below you will find information Lead Consultant s wished to share with you, assignments and/or requests for you to bring to the APSI. AP Calculus AB/BC (combined) Joe Milliet, Lead Consultant Much work is done on the graphing calculator. For session purposes, a TI-83/84 (any edition) will be used in demonstrations. Please bring one of these calculators or be proficient in doing comparable work on a calculator of your choosing without needing instruction. Unless you bring a tablet with a digital ink pen stylus for note-taking using math symbols, please leave your laptop in your housing location. Please bring classroom copies of a successful mini-lesson. In addition, teachers should plan to share a successful classroom activity or assignment and bring copies for all participants. ISBN What participants should bring: copy of Obasan an AP lesson to share (with 30 copies of a handout if one is involved) What participants should bring: Classroom text currently used, if available Photographs or artifacts of your local cultural landscape (think postcards!) A favorite geography or writing activity to share (in electronic format to share) Flash drive for sharing/collecting shared activities Please bring a jump drive/thumb drive to download some documents. 4 NMHU Graduate Credit: If you are attending an Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) and wish to earn college credit, you can enroll in one of the following courses: 2.0 Credits GNED 535 Selected Topics: Advanced Placement Summer Institute-Secondary Teachers This course requires a follow-up paper to your Advanced Placement Summer Institute experience. 3.0 Credits GNED 630 Advanced Placement Institute This course begins with the respective APSI and ends in December The fall portion of this course is on-line using Blackboard and Elluminate Live. Registered students must login to synchronous chat sessions on Monday, August 22nd; Monday, September 19th; Monday, October 17th; Monday, November 14th; and Monday, December 12th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The instructor of record will contact registered participants prior to the first scheduled synchronous chat session to acclimate them to the online environment. The Director for Advanced Placement New Mexico will be available Monday, June 13th through Friday, June 17th to answer questions, to register those individuals that wish to enroll in one of the above referenced courses and to accept payment. The course syllabus, including the requirements for the course(s), will be available during these times. The cost per graduate credit hour is $ (for resident students) and $ (for non-resident students) and $ (for international students) and checks should be made payable to New Mexico Highlands University. Visa or MasterCard are also accepted. Refreshments: Coffee, hot tea and juices will be available Tuesday through Friday morning beginning at 8:00am. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks will be provided for all registrants. Refreshments are provided, however, they may not meet particular dietary requirements. If you have special needs you are encouraged to bring your own snacks. The refreshment tables will be set up in O Donnell Hall. You may purchase snacks/meals, on your own at the NMSU campus. Please refer to the locations and summer hours of operations below. The daily rate is $5 for all facilities including the tennis courts. Natatorium: The Natatorium is open Monday-Friday from 6:00am to 9:00pm, on Saturdays from 7:00am- 7:00pm and Sundays from 1:00pm-6:00pm. The daily swim fee is $5.00. To obtain a Natatorium swim pass, simply go into the Cashier's Office in the Educational Services Building located next to the Pan American Center. No passes will be given at the Natatorium and must be obtained through the Cashier's Office.
5 Computer/Laptop Information: To register your personal laptop on campus a user identification and password is required. This information will be available on Monday, June 13, 2011 in your classroom and the APSI office. Certificates: Attendance information will be collected and recorded on a daily basis. Participants must sign the attendance sheet each half day as documentation for certificates and graduate credit, if applicable. A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants upon completion of all thirty (30) instructional hours during the APSI. Dress: Dress casual and appropriately for your session during the week. Every effort is made to hold sessions in rooms that have a comfortable temperature, although due to different factors, temperatures may vary throughout the day. It is recommended that you layer your clothes. Also, remember outside temperatures may be hot and you will experience some outside walking. You may want to come prepared with hats, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes.
