3 The Academic Curriculum Students on the Spring Quarter in Paris program may choose from the following courses. Students can expect to be in class Monday through Thursday with Friday set aside for social and cultural activities. ART 103 (LTCC)/ART 2C (Foothill): Art History This study will emphasize an understanding of the role art has played in shaping our lives and esthetics through examination of the rich heritage of French art and culture while living in Paris. Here is located one of the richest collections of art in the world: the Louvre, Rodin Museum, Picasso Museum, Salvador Dali Museum, Musée D Orsay and Marmotton Museum of Impressionism, the Pompidou Center of contemporary art, and the art studios of Delacroix and Brancussi. Additionally, Paris and the Ile de France possess some of the most revered architectural structures: Notre Dame Cathedral, Sainte Chapelle, Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, the Pantheon, Arc de Triomphe, Opera Garnier, Eiffel Tower, Palais de La Defense, and even a Roman Bath. Nearly each class session will involve a visit to one of these sites and you will experience art first hand as we discover more about the world of artistic expression. We will discuss the powerful personalities of King Louis the XIV, Napoleon and even Adolph Hitler s impact on the art of France as well as those of individual artists: Bernini, Jacques-Louis David, Delacroix, Manet, Monet, Degas, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, and Andy Warhol. You will also discover that you will soon be able to recognize artistic styles and movements. With this course you will discover the connection for Paris renowned reputation for long being the art capital of the world and for its impact on American art and upon us today. No prior experience necessary. Foster/4 units ART 114 (LTCC)/ART 8 (Foothill)/ART 4A(DeAnza): Beginning Drawing Want to experience Paris through the eyes of an artist? This drawing class is an introduction to the concepts and techniques of perceptual drawing. Using the subjects of Parisian architecture and native still life, students will learn to record their observations of Paris while sketching and drawing on location. This opportunity is a perfect fit for study in Paris as there is an image to be captured around every corner. Emphasized is a sequential progression of drawing experiences which will equip the student to learn to construct illusionary space using light and shadow, linear and atmospheric perspective. There will be several visits to Paris museums to discuss the drawing techniques of master artists. The materials are user friendly, portable and inexpensive. Included will be techniques with graphite, charcoal, conte, pastel and felt tip pen. No prior art experience is necessary. Foster/3 Units ART 210 (LTCC)/ART 47 (Foothill)/ ART 14 (DeAnza): Watercolor Painting To know Paris is to experience color. This course is an introduction to the materials and techniques of plein-air watercolor painting. The class begins with experiments exploring basic concepts and applications with color, pigment mixing and brush techniques, and then progresses with simple vignette color studies derived from inspiration and observation of Parisian subjects. Occasionally, the class will visit the painting collections in Paris museums to discuss the work and technique of master painters. Instruction is designed to be very student centered and emphasize individual as well as group assistance. As our class will usually be meeting on location we will be emphasizing the economy and portability of materials to accommodate ease and facility of painting abroad. This class is a great opportunity to combine one s passion for Paris while discovering the techniques of watercolor painting. Imagine sitting on the quai Ile St.-Louis as you record your impression of the shimmering reflection of the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral on the Seine in burnt sienna and ultramarine blue. No prior painting experience required. Foster/3 Units EWRT 1A, 2/LTCC Area 1A & 1B/IGETC Area 1A & 1B: Reading, Composition, Research, and Critical Thinking C est La Vie! An Analysis of cafés, Cuisine, and Culture of French Life - Why has French culture captured the minds and hearts of so many writers, thinkers, and lovers of life? Using Paris as the writing muse, the students will find inspiration in the environment such as the métro, cafés, museums, and shops while also actively responding to essays, novels, and travel narratives. Students will also write journals of their experiences and do collaborative cultural projects and presentations. Some representative works used to reflect the expository and argumentative style along with cultural commentary will be Sara Turnbull s Almost French, Adam Gopnik s Paris to the Moon, Ernest Hemingway s A Moveable Feast and F. Scott Fitzgerald s Tender is the Night. Pesano/5 units EWRT 1B, 1C: Literature and Composition ELIT 10: Introduction to Fiction LTCC 103/IGETC 3B & 8B From Camus to Camembert: French Literature s Inextricable Link to Culture - This course will explore in depth the novels and plays of classic French authors. Again, students will attempt to use the city to better understand and bring to life the social and cultural milieus of the works they read. The focus around these courses will be on the classic writers: Alexander Dumas, Gustave Flaubert, Victor Hugo, Albert Camus, Marcel Proust, and Honore de Balzac. In conjunction, Paris will help bring these authors to life as students can walk the streets of the literary Left Bank, see authors honored in statue form in the Luxembourg Gardens, and visit the only house museum in Paris, La Maison de Balzac. Pesano/5 units/4 units ELIT 11/LTCC 205/IGETC 3B: Introduction to Poetry Wine, Women and Song: A Study in French Poets and Poetry - When Charles Baudelaire states Be drunk, always. Nothing else matters; this is our sole concern. To ease the pain of Time s dread burden (Be Drunk), I prefer to believe he is drunk, not on wine, but on poetry. This is the enthusiasm I hope to inspire in students of an introduction to French poetry course. Poets like Gerard de Nerval, Stephane Mallarme, Charles Baudelaire, Jules Laforgue, and Paul Valery are some of the great French poets I would use to springboard into 20th century avante garde and counterculture French poetry. Pesano/4 units French 1/2/3 French 101,102,103 (LTCC): First Year French Where better to teach American students French than in France itself!! Paris will be our laboratory, allowing students to increase their the proficiency by performing tasks in the field, whether this be a treasure hunt, taking them to various parts of the city for the next clue, shopping for food, or using the métro. Intensive oral practice of basic, everyday language functions. Written practice to further understanding of the underlying grammatical and syntactical structures. Turmelle/5 units each French 4/French 201(LTCC) Second Year French Grammar and vocabulary can be presented within the context of French film, music, television and even train tickets. Visits to the local café, where the worlds problems are solved, is an invaluable experience. Further development of grammatical structures presented in first-year French. Emphasis on increased communicative competency, and vocabulary building. Turmelle/5 units French 13A/B/French 151,152 (LTCC): Beginning/Intermediate Conversation What better place to hold a conversation class than le café, with its interesting characters. Why not talk about the news of the day over a coffee and croissant. Conversation course designed to give students practice in complex communicative skills in an environment of increasingly challenging language situations. Turmelle/3 units each Humanities 36X/107C: French Life and Culture Want to know how to quickly tell the difference between a Louis XV and Louis XVI chair? This required course will teach you how to do it. Interested in Rodin, Monet, Cathedrals?
