2 Save the Date WELLNESS New Feature!!! Q and A With Niloofar The Wellness Office is launching a brand new advice column starting September 2013 called Q and A with Niloofar. Students (faculty and staff are welcome too!) may send the Wellness Coordinator, Niloofar Shahmohammadi, a question on any topic (relationships, stress, health, etc.) at any time via at shahmohammadin@umkc.edu or via the message function on the Wellness page on Facebook at Each week, one question will be selected for publication (anonymously!) in the following week s In the Know, along with Niloofar s response to the question. All questions will receive an answer the same week they are sent, even if not selected for publication. Make sure to check in next week for the first ever Q & A with Niloofar Question!!! :D

We invite UMKC School of Medicine staff, faculty, residents and students to join the UMKC- SOM team. The National Hispanic Health Foundation The National Hispanic Health Foundation, affiliated with the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University, will award 20 scholarships to graduate nursing, public health, health policy, dental or medical school students who exhibit exceptional academic performance, leadership, and commitment to the Hispanic community. Eleven scholars will receive a 2 year scholarship for $5,000 per year. Nine scholars will receive a 1 year scholarship for $2,000. The scholarships will be presented to awardees at the National Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship Galas in Los Angeles, CA on November 21, 2013 and New York City, NY on December 5, For more information on this scholarship opportunity please see the attachments to this week s In the Know OPPORTUNITIES Opportunity You re invited to participate in a new aspect of TMC Palliative Care Services: No One Dies Alone Fifteen years ago, a critical care nurse by the name of Sandra Clarke experienced the death of a patient who had no family or friends by the bedside. Sandra had just experienced the death of her own father in Hospice Care, surrounded by loving family and friends. The contrast of the two deaths touched her in a special way so much so that she began a special group of volunteers to meet this need called No One Dies Alone. Today, over 200 hospitals have done the same out of respect and compassionate care for their dying patients. This is an invitation to all TMC employees and UMKC Medical Students to consider being part of a very special community of volunteers to begin the No One Dies Alone volunteer service at TMC. Compassionate Companions are volunteers who are trained and supported to be with dying patients in the last hours of their lives. No clinical experience is needed, but a sincere interest, willingness to serve, and a caring heart are essential. Interested? Have questions? 7 Opportunity Dear Future Physicians, My name is Nasreen Quadri and I am a fifth year medical student at UMKC School of Medicine. I am working along with Sagar Pathak, a third year medical student at KCUMB, on an exciting new project that I think you would be interested in joining. This upcoming year I have volunteered to be a Community Coordinator for a new movement allied with Partners In Health, called PIH Engage. Partners In Health is an organization relentlessly committed to delivering high-quality health care to the poor. For over 25 years, PIH has challenged assumptions about what is morally acceptable and pushed the boundaries of what is technically possible by successfully controlling diseases and conditions deemed too expensive and complicated to treat in resource-poor settings. Throughout our work, we strive to give voice to marginalized people who demand the right to health. In this critical moment, we have an opportunity to make the human right to health ever more real and to work directly with resource-poor governments and accompany them through the process of building functioning, high-quality health systems for and with their citizens. This is the purpose of PIH Engage, a grassroots movement of community organizers working together to advance the human right to health. As a Community Coordinator, my role is to drive change by engaging with my local networks of activists and supporters, enabling our community to achieve fundraising, education, and advocacy objectives. By connecting and supporting communities committed to global health equity, I believe that PIH Engage will be able to significantly bolster this growing movement. I am looking to recruit potential community members who have a strong interest in global health and social justice, and can commit to joining us in monthly meetings and regular events. 8 Opportunity 2013 Anesthesia Symposium On behalf of the Stanford Medical Student Anesthesia Interest Group, I would like to invite you the organization's annual symposium which will be hosted at the Stanford University School of Medicine on Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 8:30am to 4:10pm The symposium is intended for all medical students throughout California and beyond, especially those considering anesthesia or want to learn about what the field encompasses. Our goal is to expose medical students to the different facets of the specialty and the career possibilities that come with it. We will have different workshops throughout the day: airway management, regional anesthesia, vascular access, trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE), and a full OR simulation (details here: We will also have faculty speak about their particular interests within the field, the pathway for a career in anesthesia, and the myriad of options available as an anesthesiologist. Last year, the symposium was hosted at UC Irvine and it generated a lot of interest from students and we hope to continue this tradition at Stanford this year.
