3 ACADEMIC INFORMATION ACADEMIC CALENDAR COURSES Selections can be made from the online Course Catalogue: usask.ca/programs Course offerings for the new academic year may not be available at the time of application. Students are encouraged to view the courses offered by the University of Saskatchewan after receiving their letter of admission and study plan. TERMS Fall Term/Semester: Sept. 5 to Dec. 22, 2018 Winter Term/Semester: Jan. 3 to April 30, 2018 COURSE LOAD CREDIT SYSTEM RESTRICTIONS GRADING SYSTEM TRANSCRIPTS A minimum of 9 credit units per term/semester. A maximum is 15 credit units per term/semester. University of Saskatchewan follows the Credit Unit system (c.u.) 3 c.u. is a one-term course; a 6 c.u. course is a full academic year. Students must meet the prerequisite (or equivalents) of the course to be permitted to register. The prerequisites are listed under the course titles in the course catalogue % Exceptional 80-89% Excellent 70-79% Good 60-69% Satisfactory 50-59% Minimal pass Below 50% Fail To help facilitate transfer credit to the students degree, University of Saskatchewan will release one transcript to the student s home institution at no cost. All additional transcript will be charged $10 per copy. Students can order a transcript in the Transcript and Degree Confirmation Channel in PAWS at paws.usask.ca/go/transcripts. WEEKS OF STUDY TERM/ SEMESTER BREAKS FINAL EXAMS One academic term/semester comprises of 13 weeks Exchange students must maintain full time student status Fall Mid-Term: Nov , 2018 Christmas break: Dec. 24, 2018 to Jan. 3, 2019 February Break: February 18 23, 2019 Fall Semester: 3 credit unit courses during the December exam period. Spring Semester: 3 credit unit courses during the April exam period. Multi-Term: 6 credit unit courses starting in the fall, during the April exam period. LANGUAGE INFORMATION To confirm exact dates visit usask.ca/calendar LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS LANGUAGE FACILITIES English To be successful at the University of Saskatchewan, students must be proficient in English both written and verbal. Although we do not require any official record of English proficiency, the home institution should evaluate students English language proficiency prior to nominating them to the University of Saskatchewan. English language proficiency indicators that we require of our students can be found online at explore.usask.ca/admissions/elp.php Language courses are offered through academic departments if students would like to study a language other than English. At an additional cost to the student, there are also non-credit part-time English language courses offered by the U of S Language Centre. These non-credit courses are designed to assist students with their English language skills. To learn more about English language courses, visit learnenglish.usask.ca. 3

4 IMMIGRATION DOCUMENTS STUDY PERMITS Students wishing to study in Canada for more than six months who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada must obtain a study permit from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). If a student will be studying in Canada in a program of study that is six months or less in duration, they are exempt from needing to obtain a study permit. However, the students can still apply for the study permit in case they are planning to do more studies or are planning to work on campus. To learn more, visit cic.gc.ca/english/study. VISITOR VISA OR ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION (eta) Depending on their citizenship, students may be required to obtain a temporary resident (visitor) visa or an electronic travel authorization to travel to and enter Canada. Tourism Saskatoon ARRIVAL/ORIENTATION INFORMATION ORIENTATION It is strongly recommended that all incoming exchange students attend the general orientation on the University s main campus. This will familiarize students with the University of Saskatchewan campus, studies, Canadian culture, the city of Saskatoon and other important issues. 5 COVERAGE HOUSING INFORMATION COVERAGE PROVINCIAL COVERAGE STUDENT AND DENTAL PLAN Exchange students must obtain health and international travel insurance prior to arriving in Canada Exchange students may be eligible to apply for a provincial health card. For more information: students.usask.ca/health/health-plans.php Exchange students will have the option of enrolling in a health and dental plan provided through their student fees. Students must be eligible for basic medical coverage (Saskatchewan Health Plan) in order to use this extended coverage. For more information: students.usask.ca/health/health-plans.php ON CAMPUS There is an application fee to Campus Residence that must be submitted at the time of application. A portion of this payment is a non-refundable administration fee and the other portion becomes the student s Residence security deposit. The University of Saskatchewan offers a variety of affordable housing options ranging from dorm-style rooms to fully furnished apartments. Students should arrange housing prior to arriving. livewithus.usask.ca STUDENT FEES TUITION STUDENT FEES TEXTBOOKS* Exchange students do not pay tuition fees to the University of Saskatchewan. Exchange students are responsible for paying student fees to the University of Saskatchewan by the payment deadlines. UNDERGRADUATE GRADUATE Term 1 (Deadline: September 30, 2018) $ $ Term 2 (Deadline: January 31, 2019) $ $ *Prices are for the year and may change. Textbooks are available for purchase at the Shop usask Bookstore. Depending on the courses each student selects, the total cost of textbooks can range from $1,000 to $2,000. MEAL PLAN OFF CAMPUS A meal plan is included in the residence fees for all students living in Voyageur Place, but all students have the option to purchase a meal plan that can be used at Marquis Culinary Centre, as well as at various food service outlets across campus.
