10 x P R E F A C E This profile is based on enrollment at the end of the second week of fall semester classes, 2010, and is intended as a quick reference for information about the student body at UNI. It has been compiled for wide distribution across campus to assist faculty and staff members who need current data in order to perform their job responsibilities, and to provide a consistent set of readily available data to address the myriad of requests for information from sources internal and external to the university. The data reported here were compiled by a dedicated cadre of UNI staff members who labor relentlessly to provide the information we all need to make sound educational decisions for UNI. 11 UNI STUDENT PROFILE SUMMARY SECTION I: TOTAL STUDENT ENROLLMENT FOR FALL 2010 The total enrollment of 13,201 students at UNI for the Fall 2010 semester was an increase of 121 (0.9%) from the previous year. Undergraduate enrollment increased 97 (0.9%) while graduate enrollment increased 24 (1.3%). Of all students enrolled, 84.4% were full-time; 8.9% of the undergraduates had a part-time enrollment (less than 12 semester hours); and 57.5% of the graduates had a part-time enrollment (less than 9 semester hours). Of all students registered, 58.5% were women. Undergraduates who had declared majors in the teaching curricula were 27.2% of all declared majors. The most popular undergraduate declared majors were: Elementary Education (1374), Biology (684), Accounting (642), Management (548), Communication (535), Physical Education and Movement and Exercise Science (469), Early Childhood Education (447, Psychology (440), Marketing (398), Finance (394), Art (374), Criminology (291), English (284), History (268), Music (268), Mathematics (260), and Social Work (214), Communicative Disorders (209), and Middle Level Education Dual Major (207). The most popular graduate majors were: Principalship (98), Speech Language Pathology (71), Music (68), Master of Social Work (60), School Counseling (59), English (56), Communication Studies (50), School Library Studies (46), Master of Business Administration (46), Mathematics (42), Special Education (39), Educational Psychology (38), Leisure, Youth and Human Services (36), Mental Health Counseling (36), Physical Education (32), Curriculum and Instruction: Literacy Education (30, and Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs (30). Fourteen (14) students were enrolled in the Doctor of Industrial Technology program and one hundred six (106) in the program leading to the Doctor of Education degree. Of the 11,391 undergraduate students, 7,705 (67.7%) indicated an interest in Liberal Arts Curricula, 2,872 (25.2%) in the Teaching Curricula, and 814 (7.1%) were undecided or unclassified.

12 A total of 11,978 (90.7% of all students) were Iowa residents, 1,940 (14.7%) were from Black Hawk County, and 1,273 (9.6%) were from counties contiguous to Black Hawk. The 480 international students enrolled included 333 (17.3% increase) undergraduate students and 147 (13.0% decrease) graduate students from 60 international countries. Of the 13,201 students, 11,638 (88.2%) were White and 383 (2.9%) were African American. Hispanics, Asians, American Indians, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, and those indicating two or more races represented 4.1% of the enrollment. Students with no ethnic response represented 1.2% of the enrollment. The average age for undergraduates was 21.2 years (0.1 yr. decrease) and 31.9 years (0.1 yr. increase) for graduates. Total enrollment of veterans receiving educational benefits from the Veterans Administration was 231 students, an increase of 18 (8.5%) from the previous fall semester. A total of 378 (3.3%) undergraduate students and 418 (23.1%) graduate students were married, 419 (52.6%) of these married students had dependents. An additional 217 (1.6%) students identified themselves as single students with dependents. A total of 251 students identified themselves as being disabled with 25 as mobility-impaired. Total residence hall occupancy was 4,297 students, an increase of 19 (0.4%) from the previous year. About 34.0% of the female students (2,629) and 30.5% of the male students (1,668) reside in residence halls.

13 SECTION II: NEW STUDENTS ENTERING UNI FALL SEMESTER 2010 PART A: FRESHMEN DIRECT FROM HIGH SCHOOL A total of 1,978 students or 14.9% of the total undergraduate enrollment for Fall 2010 were new students direct from high school. New students direct from high school represented 17.4% of the undergraduate enrollment Fall Almost 84% of the entering freshmen completed their applications for admission to UNI before January 31. This is the same percent of enrolled students who had applied by that time last year. Of all the new undergraduates, 92.4% were Iowa residents representing 90 of the 99 counties. Of all new freshmen Iowa residents enrolled at UNI, 7.4% entered from Black Hawk County. Of new freshmen, 62.0% graduated from high school classes of 200 or less, a decrease of 0.9% from last fall, while 9.5% graduated from classes of more than 400 students, an increase of 1.5%. The percent of students entering from the top one-half of their high school graduating class is down from the last year. A total of 84.0% of the students entered from the top one-half of their graduating classes and 54.4% entered from the top 30%. The median ACT composite standard scores for entering freshmen remained steady at 23 for Fall The mean ACT also remained the same at The percentage of students entering Fall 2010 with an ACT composite score of 21 also remained at 75.7%. The graph showing a combination of rank in class and ACT for each individual entering student is helpful in comparing entering students; see page 89. In comparison to last year, the number and percent of students entering with a rank in the top 10% and ACT of 27 or above dropped slightly. The number of students in this category is 130 for Fall 2010, down 21 students and representing 7.5% of the total number of new

14 entering freshmen. The percent of students in the comparable range last year was 8.7. The range including those ranking in the top 30% who also have an ACT score of 24 or above has decreased to 31.0% (down 1.2%). The range making up students ranking in the top 50% with an ACT of 21 and declined to 65.9%, down a half a percent. Of the new classified freshmen, 393 (20.5%) did not indicate a prospective academic major, an increase of 0.3% over last year. Students choosing a Liberal of Vocational Arts program decreased by 0.8%, while those selecting a teaching major increased by 0.5%. The most frequently indicated majors (40 or more) were: Elementary Education (210), Accounting (108), Business Undeclared (99), Biology(83), Psychology (73), Athletic Training (70), Music (56), Management (55), Communications (53), Art (48), Mathematics (47), Marketing (46), Communicative Disorders (43), English (42), and Computer Science (40), In addition, 116 new freshmen indicated an interest in Pre-professional curricula. A total of 1,942 (98.2%) of the entering freshmen were enrolled as full-time students (12 semester hours or more). This is an increase over the 1,921 full-time new freshmen in PART B: TRANSFERS FROM OTHER COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES A total of 1,138 new students transferred from other colleges and universities. The number entering Fall 2010 is up 50 students compared to Fall This number does not include unclassified students who may have attended other colleges before registering at UNI. Of the 1,138 classified transfers, 828 were from Iowa public two-year colleges and 2 from Iowa private two-year colleges. Of those transferring from Iowa two-year colleges, 84.0% enter from colleges sending 30 or more students. UNI s top feeder schools for Fall 2010 are as follows: Hawkeye Community College (192), Kirkwood Community College (178), North Iowa Area Community College (85), Des Moines Area Community College (80), Iowa Central Community College (66), Marshalltown Community College (33), Northeast Iowa Community College (32), and Eastern Iowa Community College District (31). Hawkeye Community College and Kirkwood Community College have retained their status as UNI s top two feeder schools. North Iowa Community College has moved up to third position with an 18.1% increase in the number of transfers over Fall 2009.

15 Of the 183 who transferred from Iowa four-year colleges, 45.4% came from the University of Iowa and Iowa State University while 54.6% came from Iowa private four-year colleges. In comparison to Fall 2009, the percent entering from Iowa public four-year colleges rose by 5.6%. The largest number entering from a four-year college came from University of Iowa with 42 transfers. Both the number and percent of out-of-state transfers have increased. Out-of-state transfers students decreased from 140 (12.9% of new transfers) to 125 (11.0% of new transfers). PART C: NEW GRADUATE STUDENTS Those students new to graduate study were 478 and represented an increase of 33 (7.4%) from the fall semester A total of 212 (44.4%) received their bachelor's degree from UNI, 132 (27.6%) from other Iowa colleges and 134 (28%) from out-of-state or international universities. Of the 478 new graduate students, 375 (78.5%) were residents of Iowa. The most popular major areas for new graduate students were: Principalship (40), Speech Language Pathology (24), Business Administration (22), Communication Studies (16), Accounting (16), English (15), Social Work (15), Health Education (14), Curriculum and Instruction: Elementary Education (14), Master of Social Work (14), Post-Secondary Education (13), Public Policy (13), Physical Education (12), Mental Health Counseling (12), School Counseling (12), Performance (11), Leisure, Youth and Human Services (11), and Educational Psychology Contexts & Techniques Assessment (10). There were 64 non-degree students. Section III: STUDENT ENROLLMENT BY COLLEGE Of the total university enrollment of 13,201, 22.3% (2,945) are in the College of Education, 18.1% (2,389) in the College of Business, 16.6% (2,196) in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, 16.2% (2,145) in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, 15.0% (1,983) in the College of Natural Sciences, and 11.7% in no specific college.

16 The College of Education has both the most undergraduates (2,381 or 20.9% of the entire undergraduate population), and graduate students (564 or 31.2% of the entire graduate student population). The College of Education also has the most part-time students of 26.3% (540). The College of Humanities and Fine Arts has the smallest number of part-time students (203 or 9.9% of the entire student population). Twenty nine point two percent part-time students (599) are enrolled in no specific college. Overall, females represent 58.5% of the student population whereas males represent 41.5%. But the College of Education has a 73.4% female representation while the College of Natural Sciences and the College of Business have a female representation of only 38.3% and 39.2%. Of the 13,201 students, 88.2% (11,638) are white, 2.9% (383) are African American, 2.1% (276) are Hispanic,.9% (124) Asian, 0.2% (25) American Indian/Alaskan Native, 0.03% (4) Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and 0.8% (110) two or more races. Of the total student population, 90.7% are Iowa residents, and 9.3% are non-residents. In the College of Business 90.6% are residents, 3.0% non-residents, and 6.4% international students. The College of Education has 93.4% residents, 5.6% non-residents, and 1.0% international students. The College of Humanities and Fine Arts has 91.8% residents, 6.1% non-residents, and 2.1% international students. The College of Natural Sciences has 90.0% residents, 4.3% non-residents, and 5.7% international students. The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences has 93.7% residents, 5.1% non-residents, and 1.2% international students. Among those who indicated no specific college, 81.2% are residents, 11.5% are non-residents, and 7.1% are internationals. In 2010, the College of Social and Behavioral sciences offers 36,655 fall semester credits hours, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts offers 35,541 fall credit hours, the College of Natural Sciences offers 31,077 credit hours, the College of Education offers 29,395 credit hours, and the College of Business offers 23,362 fall credit hours.

17 SECTION IV: MISCELLANEOUS For fall 2010 the top five degrees granted are Elementary Education and Teaching (12%), Business Administration and Management (7%), Communication Studies (6%), Biology (5%), and Accounting (5%). Retention rate for the freshmen class of 2004 is 80.9%. For the same cohort, 4-year graduation rate is 35.2% and 6-year graduation rate is 66.5%. Tuition and fees for is $7,008 for residents, $15,348 for non-residents. The total estimated cost including books and supplies, room and board is $15,043 for residents, and $23,383 for non-residents. Financial aid programs include employment, loans, grants, and institutional or private gift aid. Under employment types there are federal work study, Iowa work study, graduate teaching and research assistantships, as well as UNI employment. Included in loans are state loans, federal Perkins, direct loans, and alternative loans. Under grants there are Federal Pell Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant, National SMART Grant, Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, TEACH Grant, ROTC, All Iowa Opportunity Scholarship, IMAGES Grant, Iowa Grant, Vocational Rehabilitation, Commission for the Blind, National Guard, and other federal or state grants or scholarships. For institutional and private gift aid, there are institutional scholarships/grants, grants from Bureau of Indian Affairs, corporate/private scholarships, and athletic scholarships.
