13 vii P R E F A C E This profile is based on enrollment at the end of the second week of fall semester classes, 2009, and is intended as a quick reference for information about the student body at UNI. It has been compiled for wide distribution across campus to assist faculty and staff members who need current data in order to perform their job responsibilities, and to provide a consistent set of readily available data to address the myriad of requests for information from sources internal and external to the university. The data reported here were compiled by a dedicated cadre of UNI staff members who labor relentlessly to provide the information we all need to make sound educational decisions for UNI. 15 UNI STUDENT PROFILE SUMMARY SECTION I: TOTAL STUDENT ENROLLMENT FOR FALL 2009 The total enrollment of 13,080 students at UNI for the Fall 2009 semester was an increase of 172 (1.3%) from the previous year. Undergraduate enrollment increased 247 (2.2%) while graduate enrollment decreased 75 (4.0%). Of all students enrolled, 84.6% were full-time; 9.0% of the undergraduates had a part-time enrollment (less than 12 semester hours); and 56.3% of the graduates had a part-time enrollment (less than 9 semester hours). Of all students registered, 58.0% were women. Undergraduates who had declared majors in the teaching curricula were 27.4% of all declared majors. The most popular undergraduate declared majors were: Elementary Education (1373), Biology (726), Accounting (643), Management (625), Communication (526), Early Childhood Education (455), Psychology (447), Finance (432), Physical Education and Movement and Exercise Science (427), Art (397), Marketing (389), English (298), History (293), Criminology (264), Mathematics (242), Music (242), and Social Work (200). The most popular graduate majors were: Principalship (102), Speech Language Pathology (66), Master of Social Work (62), Mathematics (58), School Library Studies (57), Music (55), Master of Business Administration (53), School Counseling (50), Leisure, Youth and Human Services (49), English (47), Communication Studies (46), Physical Education (41), Biology (40), Special Education (38), Educational Psychology (35), Master of Accounting (34), Psychology (34), Mental Health Counseling (33), and Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs (31). Seventeen (17) students were enrolled in the Doctor of Industrial Technology program and eighty-five (85) in the program leading to the Doctor of Education degree. Of the 11,294 undergraduate students, 7,615 (67.4%) indicated an interest in Liberal Arts Curricula, 2,877 (25.5%) in the Teaching Curricula, and 802 (7.1%) were undecided or unclassified. A total of 11,896 (90.9% of all students) were Iowa residents, 1,932 (14.8%) were from Black Hawk County, and 1,245 (9.5%) were from counties contiguous to Black Hawk.

16 The 453 international students enrolled included 284 (7.6% increase) undergraduate students and 169 (15.5% decrease) graduate students from 68 international countries. Of the 13,080 students, 11,568 (88.4%) were White and 377 (2.9%) were African American. Hispanics, Asians, American Indians, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, and those indicating two or more races represented 4.0% of the enrollment. Students with no ethnic response represented 1.2% of the enrollment. The average age of undergraduates was 21.3 years (0.1 yr. increase) and graduates was 31.8 years (1.0 yr. decrease). Total enrollment of veterans receiving educational benefits from the Veterans Administration was 213 students, an increase of 40 (23.1%) from the previous fall semester. A total of 411 (3.6%) undergraduate students and 382 (21.4%) graduate students were married, 424 (53.5%) of these married students had dependents. An additional 212 (1.6%) students identified themselves as single students with dependents. A total of 252 students identified themselves as being disabled with 22 as mobility-impaired. Total residence hall occupancy was 4,278 students, an increase of 45 (1.1%) from the previous year. About 34.6% of the female students (2,628) and 30.0% of the male students (1,650) reside in residence halls.

17 SECTION II: NEW GRADUATE STUDENTS FALL 2009 Those students new to graduate study were 445 and represented an increase of 42 (10.4%) from the fall semester A total of 193 (43.3%) received their bachelor's degree from UNI, 136 (30.6%) from other Iowa colleges and 116 (26.1%) from out-of-state or international universities. Of the 445 new graduate students, 354 (79.6%) were residents of Iowa. The most popular major areas for new graduate students were: Principalship (41), Speech Language Pathology (24), Physical Education (20), Psychology (19), Educational Psychology (17), Biology (16), Master of Business Administration (16), Master of Public Policy (16), Curriculum and Instruction: Elementary Education (14), Master of Social Work (14), Master of Accounting (13), Technology (13), Communication Studies (12), English (12), Music Performance (12), School Counseling (12), Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs (11), Mental Health Counseling (11), Curriculum and Instruction: Early Childhood (10), and Leisure Services (10). There were 78 non-degree students.
