1 UC Berkeley/Davis Programs (Administered by the Division of International Affairs, The University of Tokyo) Application Guidelines for Candidate Students (for AY ) * The information concerning application and related documents are subject to change. Useful information and FAQs may be added later. Make sure to check the latest information at the following link and other websites Overview The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) is a partner university of the two programs described below. As such, UTokyo students are eligible to participate in these programs and in accordance with the guidelines below, they are invited to apply to the programs. (1) University of California, Berkeley, American and International Study Program (AISP) (Attachment 1) The American and International Study Program (AISP), hosted by the Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), provides students from partner universities with an opportunity to study American politics and international relations at UC Berkeley. Under UC Berkeley Extension s Concurrent Enrollment program, students can enroll in regular UC Berkeley courses for one semester or one year. Participating students are responsible for paying the program fees specified by UC Berkeley, including tuition. (2) University of California, Davis, Global Study Program (Attachment 2) Organized by the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), the Global Study Program provides students from partner universities an opportunity to take regular UC Davis courses or language courses for a period of at least one quarter (11 weeks), up to a maximum of three quarters. Participating students will enroll at UC Davis Extension and are responsible for paying the program fees specified by UC Davis, including tuition. 2. Location UC Berkeley or UC Davis, U.S.A. 3. Duration Students can choose one of the periods (or multiple consecutive periods) listed below. UC Berkeley UC Davis 1. Fall Semester: 1. Fall Quarter: August 23 December 15,, 2017 September 27 December 15, Spring Semester: 2. Winter Quarter: January 16 May 11, 2018 January 8 March 23, Spring Quarter: April 2 May 28, / 8

Curriculum (See Attachments for further details) The host institution will contact students who have been selected for admission with information on the curriculum, the courses, and the procedure for course registration. Reports by students who participated in the program in the past are available on the Study Abroad Reports page of the UTokyo Go Global website (Japanese only) 5. Number of Students to be Accommodated UC Berkeley American and International Study Program (AISP): Up to five students per semester UC Davis Global Study Program: Up to 20 students per year 6. Eligibility Participating students must meet all requirements listed below: (1) You must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at UTokyo at the time of application and during the program period. Note: The programs are designed for undergraduates. Graduate students participating in the program have no guarantee that they will be able to take graduate level courses. (2) You must complete the required procedures for Study Abroad or Leave of Absence before departing Japan. (3) You must have the following English proficiency specified by the host institution. UC Berkeley: TOEFL ibt 90 IELTS 7.0 Cambridge Proficiency Exam: Pass Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English: Pass Note: These scores are the minimum language requirements. UC Berkeley courses are extremely rigorous and require a heavy reading load; thus, only students who are ready to take on that level of work in English should apply. UC Davis: Coursework varies depending upon student English proficiency. A student with a high-level English proficiency would take full campus courses, while students with mid-range scores would take a combination of campus and ESL courses. 3 Mainly ESL courses (campus courses are partly available) IELTS 6.0 (4) Note that the American and International Study Program (AISP) is designed for students with an interest in taking courses in Government and Politics. While they are able to substitute one course a semester for something in another field, their core work will be in Politics. Please apply only after making sure this point is clear and that you agree. (5) UC Davis Global Study Program requires a GPA of 3.0 or above (full points: 4.0). For the calculation of GPA, see the Japan-U.S. Educational Commission website: Admission to the program will be determined by the host institution, based on the academic record(s) submitted. (6) You must carefully read and agree with the Attachments and relevant documents, before submitting your application. (7) You must apply only after confirming that participating in the program is possible and will not interfere with your courses at UTokyo, by thoroughly checking the class and examination dates at UTokyo as well as other necessary schedules. (UTokyo can only nominate a limited number of students to the host institution. Withdrawing an application after passing the internal screening means that another student has lost the opportunity to study abroad; therefore you are advised to avoid withdrawing your application after submission.) (8) If in the case you cannot attend classes at UTokyo for a specific period of time, the faculty/graduate school with which you will be affiliated during your period of study abroad, will handle the matter. As your participation in the study abroad program is not necessarily be given special consideration, you must consult with your faculty/graduate school before applying to the UC program. (9) If you already know who your academic supervisor at UTokyo will be during your participation in the UC program, you must obtain his/her authorization signature on the application form. If you do not yet have a supervisor for that period, you must contact the relevant office of your affiliated faculty/graduate school. (10) Before applying, you must consult with the relevant office of your affiliated faculty/graduate school to fully understand all important matters related to your academics at UTokyo when studying abroad, and obtain a signature from the office on the application form. (11) Students who successfully complete the program will receive credits or certificates from UC Berkeley/Davis. You must apply with an understanding that your affiliated faculty/graduate school will determine whether or not the credits you earn at UC can be transferred to UTokyo. You must confirm and consult with your affiliated faculty/graduate school about the credit approval procedure in advance. 7. Expenses (1) Expenses are as follows. For details, see Attachments. Please note that the fees shown are estimates and are subject to change. UC Berkeley: $23,778 per semester (tentative; including housing) UC Davis: $6,825 per quarter (tentative; excluding housing) (2) In principle, participating students are responsible for paying the expenses required for program participation, 3 / 8
4 including tuition, housing, airfare, course materials and visas. 8. Scholarship Students who have been selected to participate in this program, if they wish,are awarded a scholarship of JPY 80,000 or JPY50,000 per month by JASSO or the University of Tokyo. (Scholarship Attached to Program ) However, some scholarships do not allow receipt of more than one scholarship (see Appendix 1 for details). Those who wish to receive scholarship should apply with Confirmation of Intention to Receive Scholarship which is one of internal application documents. Students who wish to receive scholarship can apply the following scholarships. 1 Japan Student Services Organization Scholarship Loans for Those Hoping to Study Abroad (Category 2 Loans): Loan-type scholarship with interest provided for students studying at an overseas university under an interuniversity exchange agreement, etc., for a short period of time (3 months or longer, within 1 year), which allows students to receive other scholarship as well. However, please be aware that one of the conditions for this loan is that the credits obtained from your period of study abroad can be transferred to and is accepted as a credit by your home university. Please check and confirm with both the relevant department of your host institution and the Scholarship Team, Student Scholarship and Welfare Group of UTokyo. - Amount of loan: selectable between 30,000 yen and 150,000 yen monthly For details, see 2 Scholarships from various other organizations: It is also possible to apply for other scholarship that offers better terms (if awarded, students may not receive Scholarship attached to Program ) Scholarships offered by various scholarship organizations are also available. Reference: The University of Tokyo Go Global website: Please note that students who participate in this program are not eligible to apply for 2017 UTokyo Going Abroad Short Term (3 months or longer, within 1 year) Study Abroad Scholarship First Recruitment (scheduled to recruit after April) 9. Deadline for Applications Submitted to Affiliated Faculty/School Around early April, 2017 (1) The deadline varies depending on the faculty/graduate school. You must check with the relevant office of the faculty/graduate school with which you will be affiliated from April. List of Faculty and Graduate School Offices: (2) Note that the deadline set for the internal selection process is different from the deadlines stated in the host institutions application forms or other documents. 4 / 8

Application Process Submit all completed forms and documents listed in Application documents to the relevant office of the faculty/graduate school with which you will be affiliated from April, no later than the deadline specified by the office. 10. Internal screening (1) There will be a process of internal screening following which UC Berkeley and UC Davis will be informed of the candidates. The selection process will be by document screening, and in principle, there will be no interviews held as part of the internal screening. (2) As for UC Berkeley a guideline for online application will be sent to each candidate around mid April (approximately), therefore please complete the online application by the date specified by UC Berkeley (scheduled for late April ) according to their instructions. (3) As for UC Davis, a selection process will be made at UC Davis since the online application is complete at the deadline of internal application.. (4) UC Berkeley and UC Davis will then proceed with their selection process in and after May. The candidates will be informed of the results directly from the relevant colleges around June (approximately), following which, selected candidates will receive by information on the application process. Please follow the instructions from the colleges and proceed with the applications promptly. (5) Final selection results will be sent to the Deans of the faculty/graduate school to which you belong at the time of your travel abroad, once all the students have received the communications mentioned in (2) above. (6) Please make sure to check your s regularly as notifications of any problems with your documentations, or notifications of acceptance or not will be sent by . Always check your spam mail folder as some important messages may be sent to your spam folder. (7) If you have to withdraw your application for unavoidable reasons before the candidate students are selected, immediately notify the International Exchange Group via the relevant section of the faculty/graduate school you belong to. 11. Matters to be noted if you are selected as a participant (1) Completing the procedures for enrollment, travel, and acquisition of visa, etc., is your own responsibility and so follow the instructions given by the host university and obtain the latest travel information from the US Embassy and other reliable sources. Cost for these procedures are your responsibility. (2) If you must decline the offer for an unavoidable reason (or if you are not given permission by the host institution to participate in the program), immediately contact the International Student Exchange Group (intexut.adm@gs.mail.u-tokyo.ac.jp), And then submit statement of reasons in writing (no specific format, one A4 sized page), to the International Student Exchange Group via the relevant office of the faculty/graduate school you belong to. It is the responsibility of individual students to notify UC Berkeley and/or UC Davis of their withdrawal in the manner according to their rules and regulations, as well as going through the process of obtaining a refund of any fees already paid. Please be aware that refund may not be allowed or in some cases may incur charges.. Please check the Attachments and relevant websites for more details. 5 / 8
6 (3) Students must proceed with study-abroad or temporary leave according to the instructions of the faculty with which the student is affiliated. (As for procedures, you must consult in advance with the office of the faculty/graduate school to which you will belong during study-abroad.) (4) Contact academic supervisors and other faculty members before departing to avoid unnecessary trouble that could be caused by participating in the program. (5) Students must follow other warnings and/or notes specified by the UTokyo. Insurance For insurance during study abroad, students are required to take out a JEES Futai Kaigaku at their own expense. Taking out this insurance will be one of the requirements for applying to a study abroad program through this general application (This will not be paid for by the University). Details of the insurance will be sent to students who are accepted into the programs at a later date. Information on Study Abroad, Risk Management For general information on study abroad and risk management, see the Go Global website ( In particular, make sure to carefully read the Risk Management Guidebook for Overseas Travel. If you are extending the period of stay due to personal reasons, business, etc. you must take out overseas travelers personal accident insurance in addition to Futai Kaigaku 13. Program Participation Requirements (1) Fully comprehend the purpose of the program and strive to complete the courses with high academic achievements. (2) Selected students should understand that they are representatives of UTokyo. Abide all laws, rules, regulations and manners of the host institution and country. 14. Post-Program Reporting (1) As for documents to submit, described before departure,, students must submit them within two weeks after completion of the program. (2) If you were receiving a scholarship, submit the designated reporting documents in addition to the above. (3) Credits or certificates will be issued after a successful completion of the course by the host institution; however, whether or not they are transferrable to UTokyo is subject to the approval of the faculty with which the student is affiliated. (4) If there are any changes in information (address, phone number, addresses) from the time of the application, contact the faculty and the International Exchange Group of the UTokyo head office so that appropriate procedures can be undertaken. Such information will be necessary for mailing grades, letter of completion, and passing on important information. (5) Upon completing the program, students may be asked to cooperate in the internationalization efforts of the UTokyo (advising students who wish to study abroad, promoting study abroad programs, and answering questionnaire surveys). Students are expected to participate unless there are unavoidable circumstances. 15. Related Websites UC Berkeley: 6 / 8

8 4 Documents to certify English proficiency * In principle, these are to be copies of TOEFL ibt or IELTS scores. However, certificates of proficiency from other sources specified by UC Berkeley and UC Davis will be accepted. * The score must be valid in May 2016 (taken within the past two years). You may submit a copy of the TOEFL scores available online. 5 Confirmation of Intent to Receive Scholarship * Students who wish to apply for the scholarship but whose grading coefficient for AY2015 is less than 2.30 but is 2.30or higher should submit the form L-2 (Self-recommendation) together with this form. 6 Written Oath *A guarantor is likely to be a financial supporter such as family member. 7 Color copy of your passport with the page of your photo, name, expiration date, etc. 8 Certificate of Bank Balance(In English and converted to US dollars)(uc Davis applicants only) * A certificate of balance showing an excess of approximately USD 10,000 per quarter is to be submitted. The certificate is to have been issued within 90 days. If you are submitting certificates of your parents or family s bank balance, a letter from that parent/family member should accompany the certificates which states that he/she is willing to support you while you attend the study abroad program. (Please see the Online Application for more details.) <Online Application> UC Berkeley: After the internal selection, each candidate will be directly informed by UC Berkeley (around mid April). According to their instructions you must complete the online application by the date UC Berkeley specified (scheduled for late April). UC Davis: Please complete the online application following the instructions given in Reference 2 before the deadline. (The deadline will be the same as that given in 9.
